A Demonstration Of Love: NVS Members present 720,000 Naira to Baby Andrew in Lagos Print E-mail

It started as a story, mere words and pictures that sent an appeal to conscience and touched the hearts of men that people from Nigeria and friends of Nigeria; Villagers and non-Villagers alike came together for a worthy cause for humanity.

They did not gather because the person in question was a Prince that blazes forth the heavens, neither was the connection to do with their language or tribe or religious affiliation. They had never set their eyes on him but somewhere in their heart, they made space for Baby Andrew Duku to have a chance of survival in a world of striving difficulties.

The day was bright and the sky blue; the famous Lagos traffic on a regular Tuesday morning had built up so much but men, women and children gathered for Andrew despite his condition, his pain among the earlier mounting fear that he may not live long.

But by 10 a.m which was the scheduled time for the Press Conference and a presentation by the Nigeria Village Square (NVS) to Baby Andrew and the Down Syndrome Association of Nigeria (DSAN), the Ogunlana Drive , Surulere resource centre of the association was filled with people which was reflective of how special and loved Baby Andrew was.

There were journalists from different media houses which included the NTA (both network and Newsline); Silverbird Television (STV); Lagos Weekend Television (LTV); Super screen; The Guardian; The Sun, Source Magazine; The Mirror; New Age; Vanguard; National Daily; Rhythm FM; FRCN; The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) etc.

They made up the number of friends and well wishers, Nigeria Village Square inclusive, of 14-month old Baby Andrew who has Down Syndrome (DS) as well as a congenital heart defect that there was some measure of fear months before of him not having a hope to life.

But the 4th of March will forever remain evergreen in the memory of his clergy father, Rev. and Mrs Anthony Duku and mark a turning point for Baby Andrew, who was dressed up for the occasion in readiness to go for a life saving and changing heart surgery that would keep him alive to celebrate his second birthday come Christmas day this year and he had the people to thank for making it possible for him.

According to the National President of DSAN, Mrs. Rose Mordi, Baby Andrew’s case was the first time the association have been able to effectively partner with Nigerians and friends of Nigeria both at home and in the Diaspora in a life saving venture.

She informed that DSAN had in 2004 sent one of their babies to India for a similar surgery in collaboration with the Kanu Heart Foundation and repeated the effort three years later with the support of some corporate bodies.

“This year, we have gone a step further and have been able with the effective coordination of our Media and Publicity Committee to get the press heavily involved in the appeal for funds for Baby Andrew Duku, one of our babies with a serious congenital heart defect,” she said.

She disclosed that the association was indebted to the efforts of Nigerians especially the members of the Nigeria Village Square , whose response added to making it possible for Andrew to be leaving for India.

“I must express our gratitude especially to Villagers in the Nigeria Village Square who opened up a fund for Baby Andrew’s surgery and were able to raise the sum of $6141 (N720 000) for Andrew. I must use this medium to say thank you to the Nigeria Village Square who are being represented here today by Dr. Reuben Abati, Mr. Ebi Bozimo, Mr. Uche Nworah, Mrs. Ronke Macaulay and Mr. Ahaoma Kanu. Our gratitude goes to many of them abroad especially Mr. Phillip Adekunle, Mr. Sonala Olumese, Miss. Anne Mordi along with many of them we can not mention their names; we say thank you all for this heart felt effort,” she concluded.

While recounting how the appeal fund for Baby Andrew originated, Mr. Ahaoma Kanu explained the role NVS played in some incidents like the Osamuyi Aikpitanhi murder to effect a change and also the efforts taken to realizing the targeted amount needed for the surgery.

“We at DSAN incidentally were hoping the governments of Bayelsa or Delta States would come to our aid but it was revealing to acknowledge that the Nigeria Village Square took up the challenge and delivered what can be likened today as a dream come true for Andrew and his parents.”

The leader of the NVS crew, Dr. Reuben Abati, while commending the work DSAN was doing, he called on governments at all level to show more interest in the welfare of Nigerians. He described the reason for the gathering as a very touching moment that highlights the humanity we all share.

“This is a touching ceremony, brief as it is, few as we are, it reminds me strongly of the common humanity that we all share and that is what DSAN has been able to remind us of significantly that in spite of the problems we deal with on a daily basis, you can still find Nigerians who have a good heart,” he said.

Abati defined what the Nigeria Village Square has done as demonstrating the beauty of the internet and the world of technology in an age of instant communication to affect the affair of Nigeria.

“It shows that in this forum are Nigerians who feel strongly for Nigeria and for one another and who are committed to the progress of the Nigerian nation and of the human being within the space that we all occupy.”

Mr. Ebi Bozimo, also of NVS, captured the reason for the conference as being due to the ability of Nigerians to create a space in their hearts to help their felloe human being.

While expressing the inspirations NVS offers to many people, he looked forward to the future when Baby Andrew will look back into this moment and be inspired to help somebody else.

Mrs Musun Sofola, a staff of Chevron, who played a very major role in raising funds domestically for Andrew’s surgery on seeing the report on the television, expressed her optimism on the success of the surgery and expected the safe return of Baby Andrew back to the country.

Abati, along with the other NVS members, officially presented a cheque of N720 000 made out to the Down Syndrome Association of Nigeria which was the fund raised for Baby Andrew’s surgery.

In a voice filled with emotion, Rev. Anthony Duku, the father of Baby Andrew, thanked each and every member of NVS as well as the numerous people that played a role in making his son’s travel to India for surgery, a reality.

“I cannot thank you enough but know it that I will eternally be grateful to all of you for this show of love to me and my family,” he said.

The National President of DSAN then went on to officially induct the NVS members into the association while Mrs Musun Sofola was equally inducted both into DSAN and NVS.

A surprise 60th birthday gift was presented to Mrs. Mordi by the members of DSAN before Baby Andrew, his mother and Mr. Chuks Etuka, who coordinated the event, left for the Murtala Mohammed Airport to board an Emirates Airline bound for India.

At the airport, a very cheerful Baby Andrew, displayed so much courage and excitement indicative of his will to survive against all odds.

Among the corporate bodies that donated towards Baby Andrew’s surgery fund were First Bank PLC; Haggai Community Bank; Bank PHB; Punuka Legal Firm; Millenium Oil’ African Oil; Abbey court Ltd and lots of religious bodies.

Baby Andrew will undergo corrective heart surgery at the Narayana Hrudayalaya Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Bengalore, India.

Villagers are hereby informed that they would be kept abreast of all the development concerning Baby Andrew as it happens. Every Villager is expected to continue praying for the success of his surgery and safe journey back home.

Excerpts of Dr. Reuban Abati’s speech at the event.

I want to start by first of all thanking Mrs. Mordi and DSAN for hosting us this morning and to congratulate them on what they are doing, have been doing and have done particularly with regards to Baby Andrew.

I think this is a very touching moment, a very touching ceremony, brief as it is, few as we are, it reminds me strongly of the common humanity that we all share and this is what DSAN has been able to remind us significantly that in spite of all the problems that we all deal with on a daily basis; no lights’ bad roads, poor supply of electricity, you still find that Nigerians have good heart.

Many of us still look out to our brothers and sisters and I think that is the good spirit that has made this country resilient; that is keeping all of us going. What has been demonstrated is the strength and power of the civil society.

Kanu earlier was talking about how government has been negligent; we all know how government is negligent in many aspects of our lives. Areas in which people expect government to lead them, government disappoint them.

I think that the significance of this event resonates beyond this moment and one major outcome of it will be a call to government in the local, state and federal levels to show more interest in the welfare of Nigerians in issues that affect us in our private individual levels.

Definitely, an association like DSAN deserves all the support they can get because we have seen that this is an association that has great potential and is doing a lot that is wonderful.

So much has been said about the Nigeria Village Square this morning, mine is just to add a few points.

The Nigeria Village Square demonstrates the beauty of the internet; of the world of technology in a world of instant communication.

This is a website put together by Nigerians and which has become a discussion forum; a forum for the expression of ideas by Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora where Nigerians issues are debated. You need to go to that website; it’s so vibrant, people are so free; sometimes some of the contributions I consider them rude you know; there was a time I had to stop reading some of the commentaries because I though that some people took great delight in attacking me but it is a wonderful thing that Nigerians can express themselves. My brother here, Uche Nworah, has published a whole book based on his contributions on the NVS.

But the good thing in spite of the disagreements on the website, it shows that there are Nigerians who feel very strongly for one another; Nigerians that are committed to the progress of the Nigerian nation and the human being within the space that we all occupy.

Kanu earlier on sighted two examples of things that have been done to show that the best way to go about life is to look out for the each other and I can assure you that on behalf of Mr. Philip Adekunle and other members of the Nigeria Village Square, we will continue to provide support in what ever way we can.

We also use this opportunity to also call on other members of society particularly government to support initiatives such as this.

Rev. Anthony, we wish you well, our prayers are with baby Andre and the mother as they travel to India and we are looking forward to Andrew’s return when all of us will have cause to celebrate.

Thank you all so much for making out time this morning to come.

I am speechless. I consider myself a very decent Nigerian, yet here are Nigerians who are far better than I am. There is plenty of hope for our country! I just want to say thank you, thank you to everyone involved. I am completely lost for words. This is just so beautiful.

Thank you a million times.

Ahoama, your narrative sharply clarifies the reason why there are journalists and there are JOURNALISTS!

You truly captured the essence of yesterday so elegantly and eloquently. It's amazing what you were able to observe and retain in the midst of that sunny, sentimental day.

I marvel at the privilege of participating in this small way towards the preservation of a life we all barely know and truly anticipate a day in the future when Andrew Duku will give bountifully to generations following him.

Those in NVS, other organizations and individuals who contributed should count ourselves blessed to have been alive to witness this day. Tomorrow is not promised any of us but we've at least tried to offer it to Andrew.

God bless you all!

Another big achievement by villagers. This fresh step tells a lot about the positive aura that has always been with the NVS project. My prediction is that things are just beginning. I see greater achievements in the future. Many thanks to everyone, lets keep the flag flying.

Dr. Abati,

Your evaluation of this ceremony bothers me, that you can find it in you to speak about yourself, or more appropriately your ego in an occasion for a toddler is faux pax.

Admin,

I think that you choose a rep for a group with circumspection. Dr. Abati is a divisive character in this square, and that is in the least, there are many people, including "decent unknown Nigerians" from a university, or secondary school (you can try little kids like the types used for presenting garlands) that could have been chosen.

I do not feel properly represented by a man that can not shelve speaking about perceived wrongs and "abuses" of his person at a ceremony for a minor.

So little if anything is held sacred by our "elites."

Willy, in all humility, I was there.

Dr. Abati's speech focused on the trials that the family had faced and the prospects and promise that had emerged for Baby Andrew through the actions and altruism of many generous Nigerians and friends of Nigeria via the NVS appeal and the actions and enthusiasm of other parties on ground and abroad, outside of NVS.

Mr. B>Willy, please do kindly take the focus off yourself. In this affair, I humbly submit that YOU (and your opinions) DON'T MATTER.

I (and my opinions) DON'T MATTER.

The Square, apart from being a place where we could collectively, generously and willingly give, DOESN'T MATTER.

Our diversionary 'battles over 'divisive characters' and issues DON'T MATTER.

All that counts is that WE (you and I) put our meager resources together in pursuit of something we all felt was bigger than us. Let's keep the focus where it needs to be.

On Baby Andrew.

Thank you very much.
