Not a week passes that I do not ponder on this one burning question: why do people hate the USA with passion? Is this just a phase? Could it be that the world community is just envious of USAs economic, technological and political success? Could the real explanation be the USA foreign policy that emphasises a cowboy-and-Indian approach to solving political differences and winning ideological war? Do the Americans realise that there is a clear divide between might and right?
Americans, men and women are great, friendly, lively and easygoing but relatively they talk very loud. They all seemed very pleasant and receptive to alternative views on issues. They seem to know when to cut an argument short to avoid it getting out of control, which sometimes create the impression to you that they agree with you when in fact the opposite is the case.
What fascinates me most about the Americans is their inordinate desire to carry on talking as if they only have few hours to live and would rather spend the remaining hours saying all they would have said if they have more years to live. I have heard many people say (or complain?) that the Americans love the sound of own their voice.
It is quite easy to forget that USA stands for more than George Bush Jr. and his swaggering, war-mongering, arrogant, religious extremist view of everything. George Bush is not alone. Other presidents before him equally fell victim to the rightwing elements in the White House who appeared to have a very narrow and negative view of the world and the threat the world poses to the American way of life. They continue to make the same mistakes time and again. The magnified perceived threat is non-existent.
Contrary to popular belief, anti-Americanism did not start with the Arabs disaffection with the Americans over the Israeli - Palestine crisis nor was it started by the Latin American nations. It was started in Europe, particularly by the French academics of the 18th century, when they viewed USA as a ghastly, stank and too humid for life to prosper. It was also believed by one acclaimed European biologist that everything found in America was degenerate or monstrous.
What amazed me most was what Hubert Beuve-Mery (the founder of Le Monde newspaper) reported during the Second World War as American soldiers were landing at Normandy beaches, fighting to recapture France from the Germans for the French in May 1944. He wrote this: "The Americans represent a real danger for France, different from the one posed by Germany or the one with which the Russians may - in time - threaten us. The Americans may have preserved a cult of Liberty but they do not feel the need to liberate themselves from the servitude, which their capitalism has created."
An average European (including the British) still harbour some of these feelings about USA. They are quick to tell you that the problem they have with the Americans is not just their stupid policies, but just that they have an intense dislike of what America is. These feelings have been there for centuries and its likely to continue to the foreseeable future.
The American governments since 1960s have not done much to endear the Americans to the world, even when its motives are noble. The American government have a tendency to fall on the wrong side of any political debates or crises. One sometimes wonders if they have sufficient knowledge of the world around them.
In Latin America, much closer home, the Americans that profess human rights and democratic principles, backed a dictator, Pinochet, to power in 1973. In the 1960s and 1970s the whole of Latin America were more like war zones for the American governments as they backed rightwing dictators with equipment, training on warfare and torture techniques to persecute anyone with leftist views.
The story is no different in the Middle East. American government backed dictators who are profoundly anti-democratic and have been proven to be abusers of human rights. The overriding criterion for supporting these dictators is that they protect America oil supply. The Iraq war provides further evidence to support this view and re-awakened the anti-America sentiments of the cold war era.
In Africa, the Liberian civil war provided an example of how USA is less concerned about peace than national interest. At the onset of Liberia civil war, America simply went in and evaluated all its citizens and walked away. It became reluctantly and lightly involved much later due to pressure and it did so through support for West Africa Economic Community initiative. One would have expected a lot more because of the historical relationship between Liberia and the USA.
The American government continue to wine and dine with ruthless dictators. In numerous cases, all over the world, USA government participated in the overthrow of elected governments. It is difficult to reconcile that with a policy of promoting democracy and fundamental human rights.
However, we should not forget that USA has also done a lot to bring peace to the world and still remain the only country the world community looks to for leadership. USA has found itself the reluctant (or eager?) world police force. Today, there is a crisis in Sudan that has its origin in the colonial adventure of the Europeans but the world community believes its USA problem to solve.
The Europeans with tongue-in-cheek looked to the Americans to solve the problems in the Balkans. A problem the Europeans should have solved by themselves. At the end of it all, the Americans will be the villains.
Perhaps, the historical reason why people hate USA so much can be explained by how USA pursue its policies. You can liken USA to a teenager who is energetic, self-centred, and deaf to all well reasoned sisterly advice, desperate to be at the centre of attention, wanting everything within her sight with deadly weapons to hand.
As if that was not enough, USA dared to stand up against leftist political and economic ideologies at a time when the leftist ideologies were spreading round the world. The extremists hate and fear USA mainly because it represents the ugly face of freedom and democracy. Many cannot reconcile the USA ownership claim to freedom and democracy with the racial segregation policies it operated till 1960s and the effects of that policy thereafter.
It is hard for one to foresee anti-Americanism subsiding in the immediate future because there are too many John Waynes still finding their way into the White House desperately seeking to relive the Cowboy-and-Indian experiences of the past.
Personally, I think it is time the world community, including all extremist groups, separate the Americans from those cowboys in the White House. The Americans are just as much victims as anyone else.
