Nigeria Has 140 Million People – Census Boss
 Agency Reports
Friday, 29 December 2006
Nigeria has 140 million people, representing a near doubling in population since Nigeria’s last head count in 1991, according to census figures released today.

Census takers didn’t ask Nigerians potentially inflammatory questions about their religion or ethnicity, focusing instead on getting an accurate picture of the population size and geographical spread – demographics crucial to development and other political decisions.

In 1991, the population stood at 81 million people.

Results from a nationwide count this year showed Nigeria now has 140 million citizens, said Samu’ila Danko Makama, chairman of the National Population Commission.

Population growth is running at 3.2%, he said.

Four censuses have been aborted in Nigeria since independence from Britain in 1960 due to logistical difficulties and allegations that ethnic or religious groups had sought to inflate their numbers.

Such groupings hold political sway in a country where the federal government controls regional distribution of funds from the oil industry in Africa’s biggest crude producer.

What's the breakdown, state by state, or is this all we get?

I doubt if this figure is correct with all the deaths caused by armed robbery, diseases, juju and what have you and not to mention those caused by oil pipeline explosions, ammunition explosions, sharia riots, political riots and what have you, I am sure the number is more like 120 million. It is not possible that we almost doubled in just 15 years. Either the 1991 census was flawed or this one is flawed. And that is the truth.

Who in his right mind will believe that a government that cannot conduct a successful voters revalidation exercise is capable of conducting a credible census??...

Take a look at the figure released, 140million and three thousand plus some hundreds. How convinient!. If you believe this figure then Pope must be a muslim.

Population in Nigeria tops 140m

Nigeria's oil wealth is distributed according to the population
The provisional results of Nigeria's first census in 15 years show that Africa's most populous nation has a population of more than 140m.
The National Population Commission said this was an increase of 63% since 1991.

The headcount is sensitive, as funding and political representation for Nigeria's states depend on the results.

Previous results have been mired in controversy and allegations of fraud, but March's census left out questions on religion and ethnicity.

The government was concerned that such information would trigger ethnic riots.

Surprise

The National Population Commission (NPC) chairman said this time he felt there would be no problems.

FACTS AND FIGURES
Total: 140m
Men: 71.7m
Women: 68.3m

Thumbs up?
Counting controversy

"I don't expect any controversy because we have done a transparent and credible census. We have done it as honestly as we can, using the most scientific methods of census taking," Sumaila Makama told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.

The BBC's Mannir Dan Ali in the capital, Abuja, says the big surprise in the results so far is that Nigeria has three million more men than women.

The last census put Nigeria's population at about 88.5m.

"I am not alarmed about the total figure because it is still within the range of what we are planning," President Olusegun Obasanjo said.

Wait

Our correspondent says most Nigerians are more interested in finding out the regional and local spread of the population - figures that have not been revealed yet.

The census questionnaire was two pages long

The higher a state's population the more money it gets from the federal government.

Allocation of some government posts is also supposed to reflect different regions' populations.

But Nigerians must wait until the president, state governors and former heads of states have met to consider and agree to these figures.

Many people had wanted to find out how many Christians and Muslims there are in Nigeria, our reporter says.

But that aspect was left out of the census questionnaire.

Past censuses have generated so much controversy that many of them have been officially discarded, leaving Nigeria to use estimates for planning purposes.

The counting operation in March was a logistical challenge for the NPC.

It used digital processing of the forms, and satellite positioning to identify the areas to be counted.

Other questions included in the census were:

Education background
Occupation
Income
Size of house
Type of water supply
Toilet facilities
Type of fuel used
Access to radio, television, telephone

..................................................................................................................................

1. Credit must be given to OBJ, in spite of himself, for eliminating the explosive issues of ethnicity and religion from the census.

2. Having said that, I will like to add here that given their unprecedented migratory tendency, I expect the Igbo states to be among the smallest states per population.

3. But point 2 above should have nothing to do with the overall Igbo population, as millions of them outside their states will only help to swell the population in their host states, making them no less Igbos. And, this is where the exclusion of ethnicity plays out, for good or bad.

4. Eventually for the Igbo, the saying that ''you can't eat your cake and have it'' (can't be in Lagos etc, and be in Anambra etc, at the same time) will be very apt, when the state-wise results are eventually released.

In conclusion, I do not believe that all Nigerians were counted and so the 140M figure is only a convenient speculation. Nevertheless, I would say a nice job OBJ (the buck- all credit/blame stops with you) and all those who helped make the census a SEEMING reality.

Errr..why do we have to wait? What if they don't "agree to these figures"? Will they change it - change it as in 'doctor' it? Or they will keep it a state secret?

Somebody talk to me! Oi, call me Mr. President - rightaway!

Auspicious.

A charade of monumental proportion and another notorious feather on the cap of our national infamy. Can any villager tell me of any country where population figures require all these shakara before they are released if there is nothing fishy ab initio. Was it not our elders who said that a parcel that must be opened need not be inspected and tampered with piecemeal by piecemeal. A lot of Nigeria,s crediblity lies on the full disclosure of the normal components of the population result. We have since eliminated ethninc nationalities and religion and yet some groups still parade themselves as the greatest while the Sultan claims suzereinity over 70 million moslems. A law should henceforth be promulgated banning all such 419 claims.
Most importantly is how to justify the huge sums of money invested by both the EU and UN on this charade. I do not envy Makama on this grounds because he, Baba, the FEC and C of States may succeed in hoodwinking Nigerians, but the International community whose money was spent might need a higher degree of conviction. :D :D :D

ANOTHER SHOW OF INCOMPETENCY

how exactly can any nation have more males than females where does it happen. for a nation that has fought a civil war and lost millions of soldiers we should not have more males than female.remember the generation that fought the civil war most are still alive

elementary biology teaches that men have a shorter life span than women and here we are hearing that we have more men .

nigeria is a very migrant nation and most of the immigrant are male before they go home to take a wife ( for those who will). with millions of its sons scattered around the world how exactly did we end up having more males than females .

what is it exactly that we shall ever get right?

this just points how credible the results are ..............
