Ex-Gov Kalu Faces 107-Count Charge, Turaki Sent To Kuje Prison

Former governor of Abia state, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, was this morning formally charged before an Abuja High court on a 107-count charge of corrupt enrichment and money laundering. Appearing before Justice Binta Murtala Nyako this morning, the EFCC accused Kalu of transfering billions of Naira belonging to the Abia state government to SLOK Airline over a period of time.

According to the charge, Kalu transferred money belonging to the Abia state government account in the defunct Manny Bank( now part of Fidelity Bank) to the SLOK Airline account at Inland Bank.

The former Abia governor was also alleged to have at various times between 1999 and 2007 transferred huge sums of government money into SLOK Investment, SLOK Nigeria Limited, SLOK Incorporated and other companies owned by him.

The 107 counts were still being read to Kalu, who was listening to them in the dock, as at the time of filing this report.

Also this morning, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered former governor Joshua Dariye to remain in EFCC custody till Thursday 19 July to enable the prosecution counsel file a response to his bail application.

The former Plateau State governor who was decked in a suit was not allowed to respond to journalists’ question outside the court room as the EFCC operatives drove him off immediately he came out.

Dariye is being prosecuted on a fourteen count charge of abuse of office and corrupt enrichment. Dariye arrived in court, in company of former PDP Chairman, Chief Solomon Lar. Lar also declined requests for comments on the case.

Justice Babs Kwewunmi directed that Dariye should be kept in the EFCC custody while adjourning hearing in his bail application till Thursday 19 July.

Dariye’s counsel, Conrad Joseph SAN who filed the bail application, expressed disappointment that his client was not granted bail.

Also today, former governor Saminu Turaki of Jigawa State was denied bail by an Abuja Federal High court hearing the graft case filed against him.

Justice Binta Nyako adjourned hearing in Turaki’s bail application till 23 July. She also ordered that the former governor should be detained in Kuje Prisons till the next adjourned date.

Turaki’s counsel, Olajide Ayodele SAN also expressed his disappointment at the turn of event but expressed determination to secure freedom for his client.

Meanwhile, P.M.News gathered that the former Enugu state governor, Chimaraoke Nnamani is being detained at the VIP male ward 2 of the National Hospital, Abuja by EFCC operatives who have taken over security at the hospital.

P.M.News learnt that this was the same ward where the former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, spent his entire prison term of six months when he was convicted of corruption.

I will advise owners of Nigeria village square to please stop copying THENEWS evening newspaper vebertim. I have noticed this trend severally and think it does not go well with the image you have cut out for yourselves. Secondly, we are very delighted and happy that finally, the JUDAS of Abia Orji Uzor Kalu has been brought to answer for his sins. He has at several fora, boasted that Ribadu is his personal friend. I know he said this as to ridicule the anticipated action of Ribadu and his men towards hid theft. Kalu has impoverished Abia state and should be made to pay for it.He should not only be made to pay back his loot, but should be jailed to serve as deterrent to people like his stooge THEODORE ORJI(The OKIJA GOVERNOR). May God help Abia state and its citizens..Amen.

Orji Kalu is a big disappointment to the youths and should be thoroughly brought to justice.A visit to Abia state will keep any living being dumb founded as to why Orji has been making all the noise. We in America have been carrying him like a Lord untill some of us decided to take a trip home to see things for ourselves.Infact, the leadership Orji gave Abia for the past eight years is enough to dicourage any progressive mind from returning home. The Umuahia I used to know pre 1999 is now a shadow of itself,no electricity,no water, security situation is equal to zero and everywhere smells of VOODOOism. Avisit to the government house is like visiting an Ocultic Temple where everything is done with signs and wonder. The men at the gate have signs which they will pass to themselves as a means of identifying if the visitor is one of them. Oh!! Umuahia, good old Umuahia, sweet home of the meek and nice, why has thou sons and daughters allowed evil men to turn YOU into an Island of evil doers? May the ancestors react to this question against Orji Uzor Kalu.

I hate it when Nigerians misuse this word. I keep hearing it in Nollywood movies and on Ben's NTA news.

I am excited about this news and I looking forward to Gbenga Daniel, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Peter Odili and so on are brought to justice.

Dear english teacher, what do you think about this grammar:

"I am excited about this news and I looking forward to Gbenga Daniel, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Peter Odili and so on are brought to justice".

Let me remove the names that you inserted in the sentence to make it easier for you to spot your mistakes:

"I am excited about this news and I looking forward to ............are brought to justice".

I have a dream that one day in this great nation, the likes of IBB, Tony Anenih, Obasanjo, Atiku, Abdusalami Abubakar, and so on will be remanded in prison. This is indeed a victory for democracy.

@Enforcer

Sir, in reference to your question elsewhere (but related to the matter here), I fondly remember as a kid, the firing squad. It was a day out for lots of Nigerians (and some even came with their own stepladder to get a good view); the arena or stadium was packed as if it were Michael Jackson’s concert. Petty traders made brisk business selling refreshment and all sorts. People cheered loudly when the criminals are brought on stage, followed by the soldiers and then momentary silence after the main event, before heading back home.

What I cannot understand is the amount of money Nigerian leaders steal from their people. It is not just a few thousands or millions but three to four figure millions. And all they are likely to receive is prison terms?

The idea behind prison is outdated; its origin is Christian; its aims are introspection and penitence. How immoral that we, the victims, have to pay (through taxes and other means) for the cost of keeping these criminals in prison when a bullet is not as costly. Even those who deserve to be kept in prison must work to pay for their bed, meals and security. I am afraid, we are becoming too quickly civilize--even more so than the Americans

Convicted felon Tafa Balogun spent his six months (?) jail term at the VIP ward of the National Hospital Abuja? Damn!!! SCANDAL!!! SHAME!!!.

Convicted felon Tafa Balogun stole billions of Naira from the poorest and the bravest of our people (The Nigeria Police Force) and the same Justice Binta Nyarko fined him a couple of millions and he essentially walked away with his loot and vacationed at the best medical facility in our country on tax payers dime? Now the same justice is presiding over similar corruption charges involving former governors? I AM STUNNED!!!

We may need to adopt the Chinese method and execute politicians convicted of corruption.
