David Mark Is New Senate President

The News

True to expectations, Senator David Bonaventure. Alakhenu Mark, from Benue South, this afternoon emerged as the sixth Senate President in this 4th Republic, beating former Governor George Akume to the exalted seat. At the end of the more than three hours exercise, mark scored 68 votes to beat Akume who scored 39 votes. One of the senators-elect (Chimaraoke Nnamani) was absent while another abstained.

Mark, the consensus candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was nominated by Senator Lee Maeba from Rivers State.

His nomination was seconded by the only Accord Party Senator, Patrick Osakwe.

The election, which was televised live, showed senators-elect signifying their choice by standing up for their candidate.

At the end of the exercise, it was obvious that Senator Mark had carried the day. Before the election, security was tight within and outside the National Assembly as thousands of supporters and well-wishers of the lawmakers were denied entry into the complex.

The police had a difficult time keeping the crowd at bay. The immediate past governor of Niger State, Engineer Abudlkadir Kure, was among the visitors denied entry into the complex.

The former governor, whose wife is among the new senators, was denied access into the gallery where important guests sat, by the sergeant-at-arm.

The sergeant-at-arm sent him back because he had no invitation card to attend the ceremony.

Guests at the ceremony included former governors, senators, ministers and traditional rulers

I congratulate Nigerians and Nigeria on the appointment, election or selection of the Honorable Patricia Etteh as the first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives. The election of Senator David Mark coming on the heels of serious and furious challenge from George Akume; his kinsman proved that the OBJ cum PDP machinery is quite intact.

All hail the great selection proccess that produced Nigeria's first female NS speaker.

It could have been a great news if not for the IWUjoke of the 421 elections.

...finally the demons epitomised by Obasanjo and Tony Annenih has finally had their way by completing the cycle of imposing one of their own - another evil being as head of the senate...for all progressives and loving Nigerians today is yet another black day in our checkered history...anyone who has followed the antecedents of this Mark over the past 20years will weep for this nation...I now urge all Nigerians to all stand up and chase out this evil administration thats all beholden of a stolen mandate..we must all speak with one voice now or for ever perish...whatever little sympathy Yar'Adua has garnered has now evaporated...it is finnished..Nigeria's future as of today is dead...and what a better time to revolt against perfidy, fraud, impunity and evil...Nigerians arise now !!!!

The epitome of corruption as the new Senate President. I should start an import business in Ghana-must-go bags.
