Nigeria governor sacking reversed
map
A court in the south-eastern Nigerian state of Anambra has reversed a controversial impeachment of the state governor, Peter Obi.

He was impeached in November for gross misconduct and replaced by his deputy.

The state assembly's speaker said some of the 23 members who had apparently voted to impeach Mr Obi later denied being present when the vote took place.

This is the third sacking this year of a governor that has been declared illegal by Nigeria's courts.

Last week, Anambra's chief judge and three other senior judges were suspended over their alleged roles in these sackings.

Some say the recent impeachments are part of a fight against corruption.

But critics say it is often more about rival politicians trying to take charge of the states so they can control the elections due early next year.

Power struggles

A spokesman for Mr Obi told the BBC that Anambra High Court judge Nri Ezedi had ruled the impeachment was null and void.

His deputy, Virginia Etiaba, had become Nigeria's first female governor after the impeachment decision last month.

Both Mrs Etiaba and Mr Obi, from the opposition All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), only occupied their posts in March this year.

They took power after a court ruled that Mr Obi's predecessor had rigged the election in 2003.

Chris Ngige, from the governing People's Democratic Party, had been Anambra's governor for three years, but had fallen out with senior party figures soon after the election.

He said it was because he refused to loot public money to pay them back for their support.

Since Mr Obi took office in March, he has been locked in a power struggle with one of the president's closest aides, Andy Uba, who wants to win the governorship in next year's elections.

That satanic impeachement by six at six am. Listen villagers, let us shout 20 kwenus to the Judiciary in Nigeria. I did not say hip hip because I did not want to make the mistake of the stammerer who was asked to spell hippopotamus and he ended up raising a hip hip hurray response. I nominate the Nigerian judiciary as the person of the year in 2006.
I was almost dead believing that no paddy man can exist in that jungle until I read this news earlier today.
May the shadow of Nigeria ever remain long and may all patriotic Nigerians who have almost lost hope like me after Abule Egba, awake since there seems to be a light in the tunnel, and it is not that of a train.
Seasons greetings.

A-haa! NA TRUE O!

I just saw the breaking news header scrolling across the Nigerian... website:

"An Awka High Court, presided by Justice Umegbolu Nri Ezeadi, nullifies the impeachment of Peter Obi as Anambra State Governor and declares it unconstitutional, null and void."

Hip, Hip, Hip! Hurrrraaaaay! Shame on those who go under the cover of darkness to perpetrate illegality! Shame on those who come to town as Olori Oko (Headmaster) to incite others to desecrate the laws of the land! Shame! Shame! Shame on them all!!!

Kevin33, Soul Sista and all those who joined in making phonecalls to those legislators on the list supplied by Kevin, to appeal to the assemblymen and women not to allow themselves to be used to subvert the law in Anambra, rejoice today! Rejoice because those who took your calls and went ahead to 'impeach' Obi have been put to shame!

Maybe, just maybe, hope is not lost in Nigeria.

POSTSCRIPT: And like a domino effect, 'The Ladoja Factor' shall manifest across the land.

Auspicious.

Now it is time to go for the deputy governor, Mama Etiaba and her learned kids who almost usurped the governance of the state. Kai, In Nigeria politics hardly abhors any vaccum no matter how immoral and stale. Even a grave is not spared. They will quickly take over. Your Oga yesterday, now confined into the wilderness and now back again. I hope Dame Etiaba as an old and matronly woman would kindly hand in her resignation letter graciously.
Obi represents the post independence generation of Nigerian politicians on whom the hopes of that country Lies. His doggedness and willingness to resort to laid down legal processes on two occasions in the pursuit of his mandate has endeared him to people of same mind. I hope he finds a space in his heart to forgive mama Etiaba especially because of her age and the historical respect people from that area have for mothers even when they lack motherhood.   :D :D :D

Akuluouno:

A resignation will only be appropiate IF and only IF, the position Dame Virgy Etiaba took by accepting to be Governor of Anambra and her subsequent trip to 'juba' (pay obeiscance) at Aso Rock was without the assent of her former boss, Peter Obi.

However, if the above is NOT the case, then the most honorable thing for the Madam to do will be to tow the path of honor and tender her resignation. If for nothing, then at least for turning on her erstwhile kid-boss in the thick of his travails at the hands of those who have no respect for our statutes.

You and I know, though, that honor and integrity are scarce values in the Nigerian political playfield. We shall see if Madam Virgy will pass the test or not. As I earlier said, it depends on wether Peter the Orange Juice Gomina was involved in what led to her eventual emergence as Governor of Anambra.

We shall see..

Auspicious.
