Nigerian militant leader killed

Ken NiweighaA Nigerian oil militant leader has been shot dead in police custody.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend) claim Ken Niweigha known as "Daddy Ken" was executed by the police.

But the police say he was killed in a shootout after he took them to his hideout to surrender his weapons.

Human rights groups say extra-judicial execution is "shockingly common" in Nigeria, where the police lack the capacity to do their jobs effectively.

After his arrest on Tuesday, Mr Niweigha, who led the Egbesu Boys armed group in Bayelsa State, was paraded in front of journalists.

“ We did not know that he had arranged with his gang to attack us ”
Police Commissioner Onouha Udeka

He then agreed to take the police to his hideout in Odi town and surrender all his arms, local media reported police commissioner Onouha Udeka as saying.

"He promised he was going to take us to his hideout in Odi where he hid his weapons," said Mr Udeka.

"But we did not know that he had arranged with his gang to attack us and possibly get him freed. Ken was shot trying to escape."

'Harbouring militants'

Mr Niweigha was the only person killed in the shootout, he said.

A spokesman from Mend - an affiliation of armed groups in the oil-rich Niger Delta - accused the police of "summarily executing" Mr Niweigha.

"The Nigerian government in authorising extra-judicial killings is sending a clear message to youths from the region that it is better to die fighting for freedom than be killed by a lawless system of government," Jomo Gbomo said in an e-mail to journalists.

Mr Niweigha had been arrested after 500 women from Odi demanded something should be done to stop militants fleeing from an army operation in neighbouring Delta State coming to the town.

The women told police "Daddy Ken" that was harbouring them.

It is unusual for people to turn in militants as they are often feared or pay Delta communities to keep quiet, but Odi residents said they feared a repeat of an army operation 10 years ago which devastated the town.

Military operation

US-based rights body Human Rights Watch reported 50 people were killed in that attack, which was provoked by the murder of 12 policemen, allegedly by militants led by Daddy Ken.

Other local accounts put the number of dead at much higher.

A security operation is currently under way in the swamps of Delta State where the military Joint Task Force (JTF) is hunting Mend fighters.

Militant groups in the Niger Delta have flourished amid a lack of governance and rule of law.

They claim to be fighting to help local people benefit from the region's oil wealth but fund their activities with oil theft, extortion and kidnapping.

This same old story has always played out many times when the NPF are taken to the suspects hideout or in a search for accomplices. The suspects are always killed trying to escape or in a fire fight between the NPF & the suspects accomplices.

Twenty-four hours after being arrested by the police, militant leader, Ken Niweigha – the alleged mastermind of the killings of 12 policemen which eventually led to the Odi massacre of 1999 – was killed in controversial circumstances yesterday.

There are fears that Niweigha’s death is another case of extrajudicial killing, considering the circumstances surrounding how he was killed, his role as the Coordinator of Bayelsa State Volunteers in Odi town and his relationship with the Governor Timipre Sylva-led administration.
Udeka had told newsmen on Tuesday that Ken would be charged to court for his activities.
Instead, it was his corpse that was deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa.

Reacting to the arrest of Neiweigha on Tuesday evening, the state Coordinator of the Bayelsa Volunteers (the state-owned security outfit of which Ken was the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government coordinator), Mr. Sunny Isreal Igoli, said the law was clear that “only security agencies are authorised to carry arms and any other person caught should face the music.”
He said it was in the light of this that a police formation, the Anti Vice Squad, was attached to the Volunteer Agency.
He pointed out the militant was under suspension from the outfit before the arrest, following a report from the State Security Service (SSS) accusing Ken of arms running deals and arms possession.
Niweigha’s alleged ambushing and killing of the 12 policemen had engendered the invasion of Odi community by the military on the orders of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in November 1999.
Hundreds of Odi villagers were killed in the invasion.

It's really strange how the alleged mastermind in the killing of 12 policemen & a 2006 prison escapee was a coordinator in a state sponsored vigilante outfit & rumored to have the ear of the Bayelsa state governor.
I must be silly, this is Nigeria; after all we have a PDP nest of killers including corrupt former governors, fraudsters in NASS & dubious government officials ruling us.

Methinks Ken was killed so as not to surface in 2011 or 2015 as the PDP deputy governorship flagbearer or a rep in the SHASS or NASS.
How embarrassing.

MEND, Rebels With a Cause Or A Crime Gang?

http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/paul-adujie/mend-is-not-known-to-have-engaged-in-any-public-good-nor-invested-its-pr.html

Is MEND benefiting any public good? Has MEND benefited any Niger Deltan, except MEND itself? Is the Nigerian government wrong in its all out war against MEND? What is a responsible government to do to stem the increasing pace of MEND's violence, destruction of properties and kidnapping and endless ransom demands?

MEND is not known to have engaged in any public good. MEND is not known to have invested its "profits" from hostage taking and kidnapping and ransom demands to any public advantage for anyone in the Niger Delta. MEND appears simply self-interested and self-absorbed political renegades. MEND is sometimes described as instruments and tools in the service of some disenchanted political "leaders" in the Niger Delta. MEND is nothing more than a crime gang. MEND does not run any schools, hospitals or medical clinics. MEND has no after school programs, or day care.

MEND, simply put, is guilty of the same offenses of neglect, which MEND accuses the Nigerian government.

Yes, one criminal who is claiming to be freedom fighter has gone. Many are yet to go. They have all shed innocent blood. Why should the police take him to court where he will finally get freed with his influence in PDP?

Strange Visits: THISDAY Correspondent Flees Yenagoa
From Segun James in Yenagoa, 05.29.2009

The Bayelsa State correspondent of THISDAY News-papers, Mr. Segun James ,yesterday fled Yenagoa, the state capital following visits to THISDAY office by unknown persons who refused to identify themselves.
The strangers, who visited THISDAY office three times between 09.00 am and 1.00 pm asking for the whereabouts of the correspondent, did not disclose their names nor mission. The visits may not be unconnected with the report carried in the Wednesday, May 27,2009 edition of THISDAY Newspaper on the arrest of Ken Niweigha, the militant warlord by the police in Odi on Tuesday. Niweigha had been accused of being the mastermind behind the killing of 12 policemen, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police in 1999, an action that led to the subsequent invasion and destruction of Odi by men of the Nigerian Army in November, 1999. THISDAY had reported that Niweigha is the elder brother of Duoye, the current Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Governor Timipre Sylva
Duoye was also said to have earlier served as orderly to former Minister of Energy,Dr. Edmund Daukoru, the new paramount ruler of Nembe kingdom in Bayelsa state
The report also stated that an Executive Assistant to Governor Sylva is the immediate younger sister of Mr. Henry Okah, the militant leader standing trial in Jos ,the Plateau state capital for alleged gun running
Following the THISDAY report, the State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, appeared on a live programme on Radio Bayelsa yesterday to comment on the report. The governor was reported to have said on the radio programme that he was unaware that his Executive Assistant is the immediate younger sister of Henry Okah, the militant leader standing trial for alleged gun running Sylva claimed he was reading about his Assistant being related to the militant leader 'for the first time in the newspaper edition of today.'

It seems there is a thin line between militants & Bayelsa government.:evil:

Na today?
That was why I earlier stated that people ought to understand that MEND and the rest are part and parcel of the governnment of Bayelsa and to some extent Rivers state.
They are on the payroll of the government at a monthly stipend of 400 million Naira.Have you heard any Niger deltans here or anywhere condemn MEND?
They'll rather point fingers at everyone but themselves.
They started the militancy,it's an "arm of their government"
