COMMENTARY

Too many, just too many!  Just in one party?

Hmmm...

Anyway, to reduce them to six (roughly one per political zone), I suggest the following:

1.  Offer to refund "full fee" (i.e. N5.1 m) to the "FREE" fee-payers!
2.  Offer to refund half-again the paid fee (i.e. N7.5 m) to those who actually paid.
3.  Then watch the race:  first-come-first-served - until the number reduces to six!  :-)
4.  Then ask the remaining six to ensure (among themselves) that the party receives back a total of N117.3 m, meaning that they will have to pay more fees!

Good idea, everybody says?

Of the over 30 aspirants for the presidency right now (both PDP and other parties), the serious contenders in my opinion are ATIKU, ODILI, BUHARI ... Note that my opinion is not based on credentials if not Utomi, Duke etc would be better contenders but wishes are not horses so... The presidency is not only about wishing to be president or deserving/being qualified for the job. Think America and Bush. Rather it is also about WANTING it bad, COURAGE, Realistically planning for your ambition and Strategising to get it. Right now, I only see three people doing that -Atiku, Odili and Buhari.. The others are either hoping for vice presidency, name recognition or simply think they are annointed by OBJ so the whole thing should be handed to them. Gusau is another person I'm watching out for in the next few weeks cos he seems to know something we don't.. just a hunch.

I'll get some other links for their different campaigns.

Odili : (he's visited 34 states already and he's wisely targeting the delegate for the PDP convention for now)-so he has a clearly defined platform

Buhari already has a coalition of 12 parties adopting him, he's agggresively campaigning to the grassroots esp in the North and the progressives. He may also get the ANPP ticket. Another clear platform.

Atiku has a coalition of ACD, part of AD, AC, part of PDP (including at leat 8 PDP govs backing him) another definitive platform.

These are the contenders for the presidency right now and it won't be easy for OBJ to install any stooge this time around cos these people want it BAD and are ready for the fight. Already inside OBJ's PDP, IBB, Gusau and Kontagora will make it difficult for him to have his way. He can't even sell Yar 'Adua to the PDP govs. As Gusau said recently 'I am not in the race for formalty but to win. No General goes into battle unless he's sure of victory'...2007 will be INTERESTING

ALL:

Please note, I am not trying to start a gender war here.

I was wondering can someone tell me why the fees were "free" for women?

Thanks,

Faddy

Faddy, no gender war, ur question is a simple one with a simple answer: The PDP guys realise that women have not been in positions to loot the treasury in the past like their male counterparts and so obviously will not have access to the funds for the forms. Note: All the other aspirants have seriously chopped govt money both in the past, present and some future so what is #5.1 million to a REAL naija politician/army gen/contractor?

Biafran Princess,

Your statement that there are only three serious contenders for the presidency in 2007 - ATiku, Buhari and Odili - is disingenous. Going by this, Atiku would most probably run under AC, Buhari is angling for the ANPP slot, so your interpretation implies that the PDP slot is reserved for Odili and this is patently flawed. In fact you can only say this if you are in Odili's camp or have been paid to say such.

Odili's performance in Rivers state is worse than woeful. He deserves nothing other than an inquisition and indictment on the shameful way he ruled Rivers State for eight years with nothing to show for it except propaganda. He would be the worst thing to happen to Nigeria if he secures the slot of the PDP in the primaries as he has nothing to offer. If the PDP makes the mistake of selecting him, they can kiss the presidency bye bye unless they want to do the kind of rigging Odili did in 2003 where he got 98% voters participation.

Duke still stands one of the best chances of the PDP. I believe so because when the day dawns and the chips are down, the question that would be asked each of the aspirants is this "when you last served in a public office, what was your record?" What was your scorecard. This is where Duke would leave the pack behind as Odili would have nothing to show but the carton of his power project at Omoku, the fad of his traffic lights that are not working and the planes he bought for the state as ambulance and politicking machine. the constrast would be start when you place this and the sore of Diobu in PH with the opportunity and hope of Calabar.

I would join everyone who wishes Nigeria well to stand up and ensure Odili does not smell Aso Rock. He should be made to answer for his crimes by holing up in one of the gaols of the EFCC.

2007 is more critical for us as a nation to allow thieves or visionless or tactless people to gain ascendency. We owe this to the next generation of Nigerians who don't deserve to be treated in the world the way we currently are. I hope we would rise up to the occasion.

Omovudu pls go back and read my post VERY well before u start casting aspersions on my person. Note that I am not a supporter of Odili-very far from it. I actually support a Buhari/Utomi ticket for more practical reasons. I mentioned that the likes of Duke and Utomi, deserve to be flag bearers if merit was simply the basis for selection. My 3 contenders are based on those I see actually running a winning campaign-Naija style. Duke, Utomi and co can appeal to all the elite as much as they can but is it the elite that will vote? Infact are YOU registered to vote? I am an optimistic realist when it comes to Nigerian politics. I hope Duke clinches the PDP ticket at the convention-he'll make an excellent president but like I said, wishes aren't horses.... Is Duke reaching out to the PDP delegates the way Odili is doing, how many PDP govs are rooting for Duke? This is important because the govs control the state delegates. Infact, if OBJ has his way, I think the PDP ticket will go to a NORTHERNER-neither Duke nor Odili. The best they may get is Vice presidency. The likes of Utomi and Duke may be president of Nigeria some day perhaps in 2011 or 2015, but in 2007??? Aint gonna happen, Unless ofcourse a lot of people DIE before 2007-Indian apple style-Ha!ha!
