ETTEH’S SIN NOT WOMEN’S FAILURE
By Marshall Ifeanyi
It is high time the issues surrounding the scandalous renovation contract of the official house of Madam Speaker, Patricia Etteh in the face of the position of womenfolk were put straight. Ever since the news of the scandal flickered into public space, there have been flaks from especially the male circle and persistent women haters – females and females alike.

Many have come to conclude that “what a man can do, a woman can do …and even better. But this assertion has been used by many in the deformative mischievous connotation that has become the singsong of women-progress-detractors. It is important to clarify here that Etteh’s misdemeanour should not be used to judge the entire womenfolk. How so short the human memory can be. Have we forgotten the unprecedented contributions of Nigerian women to our national life as to ascribe one woman’s shortcomings to the generality of women? Though it may be a betrayal to some of us who take interest in balancing the differences between women and men, it does not however imply giving up on the dream, vision and pursuit of completely breaking the barriers to women in politics and leadership positions.

Nigerian public life has always been male-dominated. The Beijing Platform of Action, which Nigeria is a signatory to, makes provisions for women to fill 30 percent of all positions in government concerns and public administrative structures. As a measure of reinforcement, former president Obasanjo signed the National Policy on Women in year 2000 followed by the proposal in 2006 by former Minister of Women Affairs, Maryam Inna Ciroma, for a National Gender Policy to engender gender mainstreaming. But to say that the result has not been visibly felt is to say the obvious. So long as it is still the order of the day to celebrate the woman breakthrough as the first in any top position or endeavour, so long are women yet to arrive.

However, looking back today at the contributions women have made in nation-building, governance, economy and attitudinal change, one’s faith in the potential and enormous strength of women and what positive changes they bring in the body polity of the country become stronger. If Etteh is indicted then gender activists and NGOs may not be too wrong to conclude that she may have been planted to disperse the trust and confidence Nigerians repose on our dear sweet women. Her failures are then hers alone and should be separated from the Nigerian women. In fact our women are strong, wise, intelligent, prudent, emotional, resourceful, and are good managers. They have drive, foresight and are the bedrock of our unity, peace and strength. Etteh, if found guilty, by this act, does not represent the Nigerian women.

The reform programmes of the government can be said to be working (the ones working) because of the thrusts made by the few women given the opportunity to serve. Reforms in sectors such as education, health, economy, to mention but a few are working because they had the feminine touch. Never in the history of modern Nigeria had women achieved this feat in public service than the present time.

For those who feel the quest for women to make a mark in politics is to wrest power from men, they better have a rethink. They should not be afraid because our women are not overzealous, don’t have negative-power motivation but are only inquest for good governance, justice and equity to better the lot of Nigerians. So all the harsh criticisms being elicited against simple argument for women’s aspirations should be mellowed. Afterall, is it not men that have been running the show and the country has been this bastardized? How come a single woman seems to have been faulted and it becomes a women’s error? All these years nobody ever accused men for embezzlement, corruption and the like. Rather what we hear is “that man (name)” not men is corrupt or embezzled public funds.

Just this afternoon while doing this write-up, the Nigerian female football team, the Super Falcons were playing against the US team. And someone asked the score and was told that Nigeria is down by a goal. I was startled at the retortions from colleagues who quickly ‘corrected’ that it is not Nigeria that is down by a goal but the females. I then asked why the difference? This trend continued through out the game with sarcastic comments deriding the females as they played. This goes to show the contempt men hold against women.

Women should at this time and for all times distance themselves from practices of impropriety and if the panel investigating ‘Ettehgate’ finds Madam Speaker wanting, then the act is shameful consequences of which should be her cup of tea. If guilty, it will be a disappointment to women because her emergence though, an aftermath of April poll fraudulences, was celebrated having thought the Nigerian woman has come of age and now among the league of prominent women all over the world.

That hope in the leadership of women which Etteh’s emergence rekindled when she said, “As the first woman to occupy this seat, blemish or failure must not be mentioned in the same breath as the office I am assuming. I will not let Nigerian women down and those who have decided that the Nigerian woman has come of age” should not falter. If she is indicted, did she actually write the above from the depth of her heart? Something must be wrong somewhere. Let not the actions of one person then threaten to destroy the struggle of gender equality.

Etteh, if you scale this hurdle unscratched, caution then, caution. Remember, it may be all about interests. Give not anyone reason to say ‘ehem, she was foisted on us’. Rather concentrate on more pressing issues and make the law…make us happy. You hear? But if it turns out otherwise…well sorry.

Breaking News!

I did not border to read the piece above before posting this 'breaking news' . Nigeria's House of Representatives Committee Room was today(21/0-9/07), turned into a Las Vegas boxing arena by Hon Boxers. The setting was the much expected appearance of Madam Speaker before the Investigative Committee on the alleged House Renovation Contract Scam.
No sooner had the Speaker worked in did the divide amongst the members manifest. Suddenly, her supporters did not want her to testify in public and called for her to testify in Camera. This move was opposed by others and before you can say Honorable , Fistcuffs were flying from all corners.

All Villagers should rise and condemn this ignoble act by rabble rousers we call Honorables. If what we saw, is anything to go by. Samuel Peters should go ahead and take the crown without a punch at his opponent..

Let the truth be told, Madam Speaker has a right to be heard. Can anybodt tell her that we can only hear her in other to be able to make a decision about her level of involvement. Please Madam Speaker, save the MACE.

Thank you Marshall.

Some Nigerian women have made positive impacts in our society, pre and post independence. However some Nigerian men, conveniently forget this fact and decide to use Etteh an example of what Nigerian women can do in positions of power.

Etteh was handpicked for that role not because she will make a good speaker and act in the best interest of Nigerians but because she will serve the interest of those that made it possible for her to be there. Instead of blaming these people, its the women they blame, ah, she is one of you now. One of whom? A woman that the only time we heard anything from her whilst she was a member of the house 03-04 was on the TTA issue, she was the official caterer and money courier during this time. So people should ask themselves what exactly she achieved in those years to qualify her for the role of Speaker.

If you believed that speech of hers, you will believe anything. The best thing she can do for Nigerians, particularly Nigerian women is resign her post as speaker. She had nothing to offer before, I doubt very much she has anything to offer now. She is in no way helping the Nigerian woman's struggle for equality by her activities since she became speaker!!

I agree with you that women have contributed immensely to the progress of our dear motherland in the past and are still doing so presently. Fela's mum braved horrendous circumstances to wage a true political war, Okonjo-Iweala proved to be very astute and probably the most loved of them all, the Nafdac cheiftain, Dora Akunyili has prospered where men have struggled.

Be that as it may, the feeling here was that those positions previously held by women, though acutely important, are actually 'peripheral' in the scheme of our archetypal political order. So, you see, we were relieved that Nigeria broke the chauvinistic mores about the top echelons of our political life by 'selecting' {Obasanjo} a female through the PDP abracadabra machine for the coveted 'Speaker' office. Anyone fortunate to attain such height actually becomes the No. 4 citizen in a country of 150 million people!

So, it was with such apprehension and a state of expectancy of whether the womenfolk are actually politically matured to handle such a high position that we received Madam Etteh. When she spoke those words referred to by the writer in such confident and above-the-board tones, some of us, especially of the Yoruba stalk, secretly hoped that this woman will redress the ill-will generated by the erstwhile 'Godzilla' president Obasanjo towards us.

Now, beyond any ethnic consideration, in fact on the streets of major cities in Nigeria, ordinary folks are getting less concerned, more than ever, about where you came from, we were very tired of stories of unending looting by the world-class kleptomaniacs called leaders. Most of my friends have become mentally, spiritually and emotionally drained from just discussing the issue. I personally get embarrased anytime we have to deal with these shameless and brazen acts of perfidy.

Etteh, then became some sort of a hope that women will use that pedestal to launch themselves into the presidential race like Hilary Clinton. That was the extent of the hope for those of us here on ground in Naija.

But alas! It came as a shock that this woman called Etteh will drag the womenfolk backwards a hundred years to come. First was the birthday bash scandal where depravity was vividly painted, posturing Nigerian leaders as puerile spirits, never capable of becoming real. Then the renovation that will cost 628 Million Naira! What a shame.

I drive through the streets of Lagos everyday, Beggars are increasing, both with obvious deformities and those who are physically perfect. Policemen will wave you down and openly beg for cash. I carry extra cash around for this type of exercise everyday! Woe betide you if a determined Policeman want to collect dough from you under the cover of the night and you don't have anything to 'settle'.

I perpetually keep my air conditioning running because street hawkers will constantly taunt you with things as if you're under compulsion to buy. They get abusive if you thought otherwise and occassionally, some of them will bring out a gun and demand money if persuasion for a sale wont cut it.

So, to now request for a massage machine that will cost 98 Million Naira, something Tianshi guys sell for 70,000 Naira with a gift, for keeping a tired, partying body in shape at their expense is very criminal.

Sometimes, i wonder if these politicians have a soul. Etteh's primary schools lies in ruins as if it where hit by Nazi bombs on the London streets during the 2nd world war. She's living in obscene opulence while millions are starving and armed robbers are taking over the cities. It's really pathetic.

Please don't crucify me if i'm not enthusuastic to support another woman in the course of looking for leaders at the very top. Who would have thought that a former hairdresser will soon forget how things used to be when the toga of a 'lawmaker' is worn?

Etteh's sin is not women's failure? Of course not! My mama no get concern inside. None of my wives get hand inside. None of my sister get hand inside. None of my auntie get hand inside. None of my daughters or my grand daughters get hand inside. Patricia Etteh matter no be woman matter at all at all fa! Walahi!

In short, Hon. Patricia Etteh, the hair dresser and beautician, the shined congo in the house, is personally and severally responsible for her sins and defames herself, her husband (if she get one), her children, her constituents but most of all, she defames the one beyond defamation and redemption. The congo shiner himself, the Balogun of Owu. Chief Reverend student Gen President Mathew kilonjebe Olusegun OBASANJO HND

Of a truth, Etteh’s sin is not Women's failure, but the statement "what a man can do, a woman can do …and even better" cannot just be pushed aside at this present moment because it's the general song or recitation of women every time they feel short·changed. But when they face the common challenges that precede greatness, the chorus "at least you know I'm a woman" comes out of their lips.

Is it not strange that different women groups having been giving unalloyed solidarity to Etteh since the allegation errupted? This does leave out the women in the national assembly? Are we saying Etteh as a woman is not medically fit or that the work of a speaker is so tedious to the extent of being in need of N98 million massager? Imagine all the revelation of recent times by the contractors some of which indirectly belong to some officials of the NASS.

In general, to really show that Etteh’s sin is not Women's failure, the women-folk should be unbiased, objective and down-to-earth in their assessment of the present mess Pat Etteh finds herself. However, that Etteh fails or sins does not imply women incapability.
