Admiral Arogundade & his Mad Puppies PDF Print E-mail
By Hakeem Babalola

Thank God Nigeria is not a jungle. If it were to be a wild primitive state untouched by civilisation, the likes of Rear Admiral Harry Arogundade would commit murders with a pride of locust. This naval officer on Monday November 3 replaced his noble uniform with a contemptible arrogance and mean-spirited deportment. By allowing six armed naval ratings attached to him to go wild, beat and strip a woman naked, Arogundade has further belittled and tarnished the entire navy.

The incident happened on Muri Okunola Street , Victoria Island, Lagos . According to eye-witnesses and the video posted on the Internet, the naval ratings hit the woman with their gun butts and beat her with horsewhips. By the time the madness ended, Uzoma Okere, who was forcibly handcuffed and dragged to Palm Kernel House, was left with a battered face, blood-shot eyes and bruises all over her body. The interview granted by Ms Okere confirms the sickness of these military men.

Okere, herself the daughter of a retired naval officer who was incidentally Arogundade's senior at the military school, was accused of not quickly giving way for the naval officer's convoy. The offence, as for me, is as arrogant in nature as Arogundade and his men's peasant behaviour. In defending such jungle injustice, these naval cads should have come up with a better accusation. In fact, there's no excuse to justify such barbarous display of power.

Aren't naval men supposed to show high or elevated character? The explanation by Arogundade and his puppies to justify the assault on Ms Okere is implausible. It actually exposed them as stupid and incompetent people; officers who are ignorant of the law! Or were they simply acting above the law of the land - as usual? Whatever, chapter 25 section 252 of the Nigerian Criminal Code, which applies in Lagos State where the incident took place, states:

“A person who strikes, touches, or moves, or otherwise applies force of any kind to, the person of another, either directly or indirectly, without his consent, or with his consent, if the consent is obtained by fraud, or who by any bodily act or gesture attempts or threatens to apply force of any kind to the person of another without his consent, in such circumstances that the person making the attempt or threat has actually or apparently a present ability to effect his purpose, is said to assault that other person, and the act is called an assault.”

There's no doubt that Arogundade and his hound guards perpetrated an illegal act under the law of Nigeria , hence they must be prosecuted accordingly. I am not so naive that prosecuting a man like Arogundade would be difficult as it is likely to be swept under the carpet - as usual. "President" Yar'Adua intervention may not even accelerate the course of justice. Meanwhile I don't think a policy of intervening being adopted by Yar'Adua in such cases is appropriate. It clearly shows, even an admission that there is no suitable institution for the desired purpose. Of course, we have started seen such pervert of justice from the Navy Espirit de Corps headquarters. Listen to who's talking about the incident. Navy’s Spokesperson, Commodore David Naibada in his poor attempt to defend his men's conduct says, "The lady ‘provoked’ them because she snatched a horsewhip from one of the men." If I may ask, why do these naval men carry horsewhip? Surely the horrendous assault on Ms Okere was not the first and probably may not be the last.

For, how many of such brutal display of power have gone unnoticed or recorded? Plenty! Three years ago, one Air Force officer shot a commercial motorcyclist dead at Allen Avenue just because the boy had brushed his car. The convoy of the Governor of Imo state, Ikedi Ohakim once molested a mother of two at Ikoyi over what his aides called "tribal arrogance". Even police officers routinely harass, detain and molest women accused of dressing "indecently".

Ms Okere says, "A man (Abdulazeez Abdulahi) who tried to challenge them was hit on the head with the butt of a gun," adding that other two ladies (they are pregnant) in her car were also dragged out and beaten up. Do I hear you saying what kind of country is this? The human rights organisations must take up this case, I think the evidence is visible enough to make it a piece of cake. There must be a way to stop this primitive, untutored and uncouth attitude by the uniform men whose duty should be service.

It may not be as large as that of Martin Luther King's Jr, but I have a dream. There come a certain time when my people will react spontaneously to such official misuse of uniform. That day I am talking about will be the beginning of a quiet non-violence resistance against those who think they are above the law of the land. But, isn't it possible for the government to ban the use of siren in certain quarters where it’s being abused? The move by the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, to ban visiting governors and top government officials from using sirens in the state is highly commendable. However, the implementation and enforcement of such law is another thing entirely.

Lastly, I am compelled to ask, did Ms Okere's father who is now the Sergeant-At Arms of the National Assembly, also displaced such coarse manner during his time in the military? If so, although it doesn't justify the assault on Ms Okere, it would have been the case of a stone thrown in the market. Even then Ms Okere’s case only represents the symbol of official brutality, dangerous arrogance, and disrespect for the land's constitution we are fighting against.

I do not approve the madness of Admiral Arogundade and his goons. Thank God the incident happened with the daughter of a retired officer.
Could it be that God used the incident to repay the madness commited by Uzoma's father during his time in service?

God help us in Nigeria where being nobody is as bad as being dead.

Some commentators should please not trivialise this otherwise very serious matter of national embarrashment.

I never believe the sins of parents should be served their children. So, please all should quit this good-for-her-ex-soldier-father bile-spewing.

I will repeat as I said on this Blog in an earlier thread - Both Arogundade and Okere are well known to me. Okere luckily enough, better known to me, because I served under him as a very young officer. A graduate of the University of Ife - He was a very professional, humble, intelligent, cheerful and very methodical officer of the Nigerian Army Signal Corp. He was soft-spoken and would always speak last, but only when he necessarily must.

He was very particular about astute family life and ensuring that his wife and children were never 'into' the Nigerian Army way of spouses and kids lording it over others of lower ranks than their husbands or fathers. The Okere family were very private and religious people.

About Arogundade, some other person will soon narrate to us his whole pedigree.

Bis-salam (I leave you in Peace)

this issue is too serious to be taken with levity, by insuinating that the victim is suffering for her father's "sins". this could have been anyone or me for that matter, as i have absolutely no regard for our military officers or any siren blowing convoy with their wanton and obsence display of unnecessary power? for that matter as there is a law against all of these nonsense.

UZOMA OKERE……….demoCRAZY in action!

I watched the video (www.saharareporters.com) with distaste and anger in my veins. Arguing with my own eyes, (this cannot be true, it must be a movie location, they cannot be humans, and maybe they are aliens from the 13th planet.)

Alas! My eyes were not deceiving me, they are flesh and blood, our own naval officers beating and manhandling a woman to the extent. of stripping her topless to the full glare of everybody.

HER OFFENCE? She dared to stand in the way of Don, Chief, Oluaye, Rear, Admiral, Olufemi Arogundade and his ferocious wolves.

I have tried to restrain myself from commenting on this barbaric act .This is because I realize that my comments could be misconstrued as that of a feminist but the scenario keeps sliding in my mind, it could have been your sisters, our mothers or me. (To my mind, this is raw wickedness!)

However, the magnitude of the situation has made it imperative that I lend my voice to discourse for posterity.

Seeing her dragged into the van is heart wrenching. All her friends and everybody around could do was watch with dismay (the bold ones recorded with the phones, of course hell was let loose because of this singular act), hoping that life will not be snuffed out of her.

Just like the king Kong that he is, the admiral left his men to display their (and his) madness and Uzoma later driven to him to inspect the work done. I see their action an insult to the animals (so far, that is what they have been nicknamed) kingdom.
How many dogs have charged at you this month?
Have you been beaten by any snake this year?
I guess your answer is NO, as small as the head of a rat is, it can still think.
Do you think a right thinking man would do what they did?

These men have acted way below animals. So on behalf of all animals, I protest. Any man that can raise his hand to strike a woman is the lowest specie of cowards, let alone six men against one woman, they should be castrated.

Their destination (palm wine joint), we would have thought they were on their way to welcome the loved president, Obama (who has come to thank Oby and friends for the millions gathered during his campaign).

“You are lucky they did not kill you,” Arogundade said (I defend him, he could not have made such statement, it must have been a phone ringing, his ring tone maybe) but indeed he opened that thing called his mouth to utter such; he should be given a permanent bed space in Aro Psychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta.

If the “don and his boys” were that “strenghtfilled”, I would have personally organize a bout between them and all the area boys in Lagos. Iraq is still in need of men, if our naval officers do not know where to channel their energy’s, I will sponsor their trip.
The P.R.O (I reserve my comment on this egg brained) did a very good job, defensive of his partners, he accused Miss Okere of taking the horsewhip off the men. What did he expect her to do in such situation? Of course hold on to the whip, the source of her pain.

In addition, the case is been investigated. What is there to investigate? (We have eyes, we saw all that happened) The investigation of the death of M.K.O Abiola, what became of it? Alternatively, is the assassination of Bola Ige, Kudirat Abiola or is the construction of some weather beaten monument an answer to their death.

I strongly advise arogundade and his men to pray for justice for Uzoma and punishment on themselves or else if this issue is swept under the carpet (like so many like it), they should remember what the bible says about the sins of the father.

Seething in anger, so many Nigerians, home and abroad and I awaits justice for our sister, Miss. Uzoma Okere whose right was trampled upon in broad day light.

A close pondering of the facts in this situation will lead to the only logical conclusion a sincere mind can deduce: No one really cares! It is all about the hype (F G, prove me wrong).
