A Psalm of New Living PDF Print E-mail
By Hakeem Babalola

I understand that he now lives in massive fortress. It is a well-protected strong building intended to be difficult for enemies to enter. Does he have enemy? He drives armoured jeep, or should I say tank which is fitted with a hard covering in order to protect him from bullets and missiles. He also wears bullet-proof vests for protection. He needs to jealously guard himself in a nation where lack of security has brought cholera of fear to the communities.

Who is tormenting our young billionaire? Is it the masses? Or is it the situations he helped create that have compelled him to wear impenetrable suit whenever he cools down in his Olympic-size swimming pool? What a way to live!

But does he eat armoured food, too? This might become necessary in case his enemies decide to terminate his life through food poisoning. I think he also needs armoured soap, even armoured prayer to deliver him from enemies’ possible attacks. Also he should not take things for granted, so he should endeavour to provide the same equipment for his immediate family. The enemies of nowadays are so notorious and dreadful. They could go to any length in order to realise their ambition. They are hungry and angry.

Of course, our young billionaire governor or is it senator is smart enough to know that the society in which he lives has become dangerous. But is living like a prisoner the best solution to save his life? Even if he thinks so, we need to tell him the truth. We need to tell him the truth not necessarily to protect him from his fears, but to show him how stupid he has become all along due to greediness. If he changes from odious behaviour that has turned him a prisoner in his own skin, then there’s hope for his freedom.

Although he is extremely rich, apparently he is not in comfort. He lives in constant fear of being eliminated. The guilty, they say, are always afraid. This is why he ends up being a nonentity in the society. Going around like James Bond in those super fictional movies! In his bid to accumulate wealth, humiliate and depress his people further, he forgot to do the necessary things that would have eased his living among his people. That was when he had the opportunity to effect positive change.

The evil that men do lives after them! When this man had the opportunity to install security in his society, he went on to dismantle all the components of security. He killed justice but preached peace; he murdered education but preached religion; he was a servant leader but became absolute ruler; he became stupendous rich at the expense of his people who remained in poverty. Eventually he became the opposite of whatever he had preached against.

And now he is reaping what he has sown. If only he is ashamed of living in a heavily corrugated house, driving armoured jeep and wearing bullet-proof suit. He probably considers living in such environment a boost to his status. That is why he is enthusiastic to buy the armoured cars specifically built for the Niger Delta areas of the country by Texas Armouring Corporation. No, his is not ashamed. Though he is in constant fear, it is also time for him to display his wealth – ill gotten wealth. This man won’t change.

How very stupid he must be! How could someone like him be so ignorant of law of retribution? If he had built a society where justice and equity reigned, he might never be a prisoner in his own house. But since he refused to implement those policies that would have heralded normal living and maximum security, he should continue to live in fear. Or does he actually think that he could steal tons of grains meant for the starving Nigerians and still live a normal live! It is impossible.

This man has seen nothing yet. A time is coming when the bullet-proof vest will not be able to protect him. To live, he’d need to do a surgery by planting armour in his system. By the time he gradually turned into a robot, he will have become wiser. Now he seems not to understand the calamity of the situation. He is yet to know that once you have murdered sleep, you shall sleep no more. This man has murdered sleep.

He who wants to be successful must never have evil thought. If this man is sensible at all, he would have known that the repercussion of injustice is always fatal. Even if he could protect himself by using armoured car, house, suit, soap, food etc, what of his family? If I were him, I would spend – at least – half of the stolen money on whatever will guarantee my free movement. Greediness must be an incurable disease.

Despite his fortress house, armoured car and bullet-proof vests, he couldn’t protect himself from armed robbers or assassins. What an irony of life! Now that he is being chased here and there by the jungle society he helped create, what should he do? The only alternative left for him now is this: He should crush his people with his armoured car in order to avoid living in fear of his angry people. Let him do just that and I assure him there would be no one left to fear.

Many thanks for this bitter truth article.
The Yoruba saying of "olowo kan larin otoshi mefa, otoshi na ni gbogbo won" - One rich personamong many paupers is just a pauper himself- is so apt today. The rich guy is under pressure from all sides:

- to give handouts to stave off the complete hunger & anger of his impoverished relations & neighbours.
- lives in a virtual prison, which he mistakes for signs of affluence and power, thus worse of than the pauper.
- scared of the paupers getting enough courage & sense to realise that he made his stupendous wealth off them and killing him.

The signs of these negative consequences are all around us and yet we behave like the ostrich with head buriesd in the sand.
I hope this will not only be a thought provoking article as usual but action precipitating as well.

"olowo kan larin otoshi mefa, ohun gan ni olori otoshi"

One rich personamong many paupers is himself king of paupers

The Nigerian parable again. I hope they will learn before they become victims of their wealth accosted by the very society they oppress today.

Thanks Foxcatcher for the apt moderation of my yoruba adage.
I forgot to add one more glaring and important aspect, that the rich man in the midst of paupers will continue to be regarded as a member of the pauper community by people outside his comminity. This is how our wealthy, local champions are regarded by our European and Western. Despite their colossal wealth our na-me-big-pass-for-village cannot command any iota of respect from their white counterparts except when they have something to milk from them still. The white guy will in some way give back to his society, including schorlaships to even black Africans that he is not related to but ours will rather oppress, even when it is obviously senseless.
