What is Boko?

By Senator Umaru Dahiru

We didn’t get the chance to hear Muhammad Yusuf define his terms before he was killed; what’s Boko and what’s Haram?

If by Boko he meant Western education and if Western education is the combination of physics, chemistry, medicine, geography, etc then few people are as important to the development of Boko as Muslims. Even Westerners admitted as much.

Is abnormal psychology Boko? The authors of Ablongman Abnormal Psychology said, “Islamic physician Avicenna or Ibn Sina (c. 980-1037) approached the treatment of mental disorders with humane practices unknown to Western medical practitioners of the time. During the Middle Ages in Europe (c.500-1500) scientific inquiry into abnormal behaviour was limited, and the treatment of psychologically disturbed individuals was characterized more often by ritual or superstition than by attempts to understand an individual’s condition. In contrast to Avicenna’s era in the Islamic countries of the Middle East or to the period of enlightenment during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Middle Ages in Europe were largely devoid of scientific thinking and of humane treatment for the mentally disturbed. A similar sequence of events occurred in other parts of the world.”

Was Yusuf saying that such monumental contributions (Europe, the home of science, had to wait at least 500 years before they could master the scientific techniques of the Muslims) of the likes of Ibn Sina, Boko, and therefore sinful?

Is psychiatry Boko? To highlight the wisdom and the techniques of Muslims in the practice of medicine, Browne authored a book in 1921 called Arabian Medicine. On pages 88 to 89, he told a story of how Ibn Sina systematically treated the mental illness of a certain prince. ‘A certain prince was afflicted with melancholia and suffered from the delusion that he was a cow…. He would low like a cow, causing annoyance to everyone… crying, “Kill me so that a good stew may be made of my flesh” Finally he would eat nothing….Avicenna was persuaded to take the case…. First of all he sent a message to the patient bidding him be of good cheer because the butcher was coming to slaughter him whereat…the sick man rejoiced. Some time afterwards Avicenna, holding a knife in his hand, entered the sickroom saying, “Where is this cow that I may kill it?” The patient lowed like a cow to indicate where he was. By Avicenna’s orders he was laid on the ground bound hand and foot. Avicenna then felt him all over and said, “He is too lean, and not ready to be killed; he must be fattened.” Then they offered him suitable food of which he now partook eagerly, and gradually he gained strength, got rid of his delusion, and was completely cured.’

Is embryology Boko? Professor Keith L. Moore a former President of American Association of Clinical Anatomists said “I was aware of the glorious history of Muslim scientists in the 10th century AD, and some of their contributions to Medicine.”

Is mathematics Boko? The Economist magazine of London although not pro-Islam said glorious things about the Muslim mathematicians Omar Khayyam and Al- Khawrizmi from whose name we have algorithm. ‘Mohammed Al Khwarizmi was an Arab mathematician whose revolutionary new ideas transformed the field of mathematics. His book, hisab al-jabr, gave birth to a whole new field in mathematics: algebra. In fact, the very word algebra comes from the Arabic word al-jabr from the name of his book.’

Mohammed Al Kwarizmi’s contributions to mathematics are without match. Are his contributions Boko, therefore sinful?

The Boko we know might not be the one Yusuf was referring to. No Muslim in his right mind would say Western education is haram. But like Muhammad Haruna said on the back page of Daily Trust of Wednesday 4th of August Yusuf’s “rejection of modernity suggests he had mistaken it for Westernization.”

But even where Yusuf had legitimate concerns about Boko, like his rejection of Darwin’s theory, it is not enough grounds for a blanket rejection of Boko. How many Nigerians – Christians and Muslims – believe Darwin anyway?

Sheik Yusuf should have done what Hussain al Jasr did in Iraq. When Khalifa Abdul Hamid called Jasr to ask his opinion about Darwin’s (then new) theory of evolution, Jasr said he saw no conflict between the theory and religion. The Khalifa was shocked and asked Jasr to explain further. Jasr said that the theory of evolution had unwittingly acknowledged a system operating in the universe; therefore, the question to ask was who created the system?

Senator, thanks for your contribution to the issue of what is Haram in Islam...but the leadership in the North should as a matter of urgency addressed the issue of cripping poverty...This axis is inceasingly becoming a volatile region due to lack of education and selfish leadeship...Until the northern leadership raise up to their callings, crippling poverty, illiteracy and un-warranted violence will always be a northern phenomenon.Thereby de-industralising and isolating the north.

Plenty has been written about the recent religious unrest in Nigeria a.k.a Boko Haram. After all has been said, I believe it is time for a thorough autopsy to be carried out on the series of perennial religious riots in the north. Is there something fundamentally intrinsic that needs to be re-engineered socially, culturally and religiously? Are there fears and insecurities that need to be addressed? Are there people who are preying on the people's vulnerability and sensibilities to foment trouble for their personal ill gains? Akin to the situation in the country, are there people working to maintain the status quo to the detriment of human and economic growth and development in the north? It is this situation that needs to be dissected and the cancerous social malady nipped in the bud.

Islam and Islamic ideals have always been spread by the sword right from the time of Mohammed.
Boko Haram is not alone and will never be.

These people are mostly former almajirai and have grudges against western education because they did not have previlage to attend western type of schools.Since distinguished senator is one of the northern leaders, they should focus on addressing the menace of ignorance, almajiranci and poverty in the north rather than some of the northern leaders neglecting their people and sending their children to study in europe and marry amongst themselves;while the masses are abandoned to join these type of heretic sects.

Boko Haram means a university graduate who cannot find job after several years of education.

Boko Haram means several years of neglect in Northern Nigeria where few people siphon money and prepare cows as feast every friday for the millions of illiterate there

Boko Haram means a university graduate who meets NO VACANCY on all the streets in Abuja and Lagos

Boko Haram means a first class graduate who becomes a barber

Boko Haram means cultists in Nigerian Universities

Boko Haram means University students who are armed robbers at night

I could go on to tell you one million meanings of Boko Haram in Nigeria and then you can tell me if Western Education is not useless in Nigeria.

Boko Haram means illiterates using politics and violence to cheat the others who you think should know better

Boko Haram means people like this writer not having done any meaningful thing to his community of origin

Boko Haram is Nigeria, Nigeria is Boko Haram, Ask your president...he knows the truth because Boko Haram means believing in juju men and sorcery...which is why he cannot seek medical treatment in Nigerian hospitals.

He seeks jujumen in Nigeria and medical doctors abroad, is that not Boko Haram Nigeria?

Let me see road please...

You are right, Lateesha; they have always used violence, and not reasoning to spread their ideas. And the Boko Haram guys have said they would be following this known islamic path to conquer the whole of Nigeria, in declaring that they will soon start bombing Lagos and other parts of the southwest. I don't know why they chose southwest Nigeria but I presume that they see it as a weak point, which was conquered by their ancestor, Dan Fodio and his gang several centuries back. I wish them success in this crusade. Actually, all they need to do is ask the Yoruba moslems to stop going to school - great men like Gani and Lateef Adegbite - it should be easy with Adegbite as he already lives among them in Kaduna. The greatest obstacle for the Boko guys and their handlers remains the southeast axis; when are they coming there to islamise, or is there no road from Kano to Calabar? Smart guys, they already realise that the southeast axis is a hard nut to crack; their ancestors must have left good documentation to this fact. If they cannot pass through the southeast to the sea, I don't know how they are going to accomplish their mission of Sharia for All by 2020. He he he he. Ha ha ha ha ha.

I am most impressed by the new project that the Boko guys have developed b/c for the first time, the Hausa-Fulani are brave enough to come out openly and declare war on the rest of the unfortunate people that the British lumped up with them. It would be a good day to face them and send them out of that land. If Orkar failed to send them out peacefully, the time is finally arriving. I don't know about the southwest people, but I do know that we in the southeast can clearly identify the Hausa-Fulani by face, and will begin to kill them should any part of our land be bombed. We will show them who makes and uses better bombs. And then take the war to them. Perhaps, they have forgotten who saved them from Biafra; they will remember when they head southwards. Who is afraid of the threats of Hausa-Fulani cowards? Do they intend to bring in the scraggy faces (Arabs) too? We will be waiting for them, and can identify those more easily from miles away. Nigeria is not Sudan, and we do not fight like the Americans; we take no prisoners and do not know Geneva - it will be total annihilation.

(Dis)Honourable Senator: Rather than lecture us here on what the Arabs did for the world, train your own people to be responsible. Even the Arab world you are talking about is today matching ahead, using western technology. It is your own people that are still breaking firewood and fetching well water like donkeys in the 21st century. You like the system, as it affords you to live like a prince in your small kingdom. Your boys kill non-moslems year in year out, and have promised to take the war further. Listen to what I said above; if your boys are scared to rise up against you (islam forbids them), the people they will touch outside the northern enclave will bring war to your kingdom, and you will know no peace. A word is enough for the wise.

Just one question (actually two):

Why did the police summarily and extrajudicially dispose of the sect's leader? Did someone in power fear that he would expose some powers-that-be during trial?
