THE JOS CRISES AND THE NEED FOR A RESTRUCTURING OF THE FEDERATION. The recent unfortunate communal/religious crises in Jos has brought certain pertinent questions to fore and one of which is the urgent need to RESTRUCTURE the country which was “cobbled” together by fiat by British Administrators in 1914. The incessant communal/ethnic crises masquerading as religious crises especially in the Northern part of the country, if not honestly tackled by convening an urgent summit of all ethnic nationalities to discuss the basis of their continued association as one country may eventually lead to the demise of the entity called Nigeria which could result in serious humanitarian crises that may make the Rwandan crises of 1994 look like a child’s play. The situation as it stands now in Nigeria is akin to a house where the inhabitants have succeeded in sweeping all the dirt in the house under the carpet for a period of time which is now threatening the health and peaceful existence of the inhabitants. In this time and age where several epochal events are happening such as the emergence of a black President in a predominantly white country, the emergence of a female Prime Minister in a predominantly Muslim country, the emergence of a female Christian European as the head of the ruling party in India a country with a majority Hindu population .For how long shall we continue to hide behind such silly primordial and base sentiments to perpetrate heinous crimes against fellow citizens. These incessant crises continues to portray Nigeria as a weak state which truly she is. The weakness of the Nigerian state has been brought about by the deliberate rubbishing and weakening of Institutions of State by successive regimes past and present, this may be the reason why several foreign intelligence reports and think tanks had always suggested that the present contraption called Nigeria may wither away and die in the not too distant future. The complicity of the “ruling class”/government in fuelling these internecine conflicts in Nigeria cannot be wished away or underestimated as NOBODY has ever been docked or put on trial for killing, maiming ,looting, burning of private and public property and so on all under the guise of ethnic/religious conflicts. The recent crises in Jos presents an opportunity for those in power if they really have the interest of the country at heart to ensure that a final stop is put to these incessant carnage and madness by convoking a sovereign national conference where the country will be restructured and all perceived injustice[s] and grievances will be discussed and addressed, because as it seems the current crises in jos is far from over judging by the actions and comments of the combatants. Anything short of this will only be postponing the evils day. Babs Iwalewa Kaduna Kaduna State
