Shekarau : Don't answer their call if, and only if ...
Shehu Mustapha Chaji

Malam Ibrahim Shekarau the only two term Executive Governor of Kano State , is a Man that is use to swim against tides. When he first emerge on the political scene before the 2003 elections, many political pundits listed him among the unserious contenders and suprisely he emerged victorious. So also during the 2007 elections against all odds breaking the traditional norm of not having second term in Kano Goverment House, Governor Shekarau broke the jinx ! And recently his supporters are calling on him to seek for the office of President of Nigeria in 2011.

Constitutionally , Governor Shekarau is entitle to seek for office of President of Federal Republic of Nigeria , and like all Kanawas i will also look forward to the day a son of the soil will become a democratically elected President of Nigeria as no one from Kano state have the priveledge of been elected as President of Nigeria. And if Shekarau answered the call, will he emerge victorious in a venture so many Kanawas have attempted and failed?Prominent among them are Mallam Aminu Kano , Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule (Dan Masanin Kano) , Alhaji Bashir Usman Tofa and Alhaji Abubakar Rimi.

The call on Shekarau to contest for presidency come 2011 is getting louder and louder by the day , and he has neither answer nor said what are his intentions after leaving Kano Goverment House in 2011. Before the call snowball to a national dimension , Shekarau should as a matter of urgency study the possibilities or otherwise of the call and take appropriate position.

Already many political commentators have various views as to why Governor Ibrahim Shekarau might dive into the political terrain to seek for Nigeria's presidency in 2011. Some are of the view that as his party ANPP is the biggest opposition party in Nigeria , he may be the party's presidential aspirant so as to enable President Umaru Musa Yar'adua have a smooth coast to victory in 2011 elections, no matter how the election will be conducted Shekarau will accept the result in good faith and will be willing to board the goverment of national unity after the elections. While some are of the view that Governor Ibrahim Shekarau will be used to finally frustrate GeneralMuhammadu Buhari out of ANPP even if he decides to stay put in the party after the Supreme Court delivers it's judgement . As Shekarau a loyal and law abiding party member may have upper hand against other contenders like General Muhammadu Buhari if he decides to contest against who are not loyal to party supremacy .

As for me i will sincerely advise Malam Ibrahim Shekarau to study the terrain carefully before sticking his neck in this risky and unpredictable venture of contesting for seat of Nigeria's presidency. Firstly, he should be wise enough like Senator Ahmed Sani Yariman Bakura not to contest against President Umaru Yar'adua if he decide to contest for second term. Secondly, he should not contest against Genaral Muhammadu Buhari even if he is not contesting on the platform of ANPP to avoid missing in the presidential aspirants crowd such like former Governor of Sokoto state Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa during the 2007 elections . Thirdly, he should only contest if his financial status improves or when he has solid promises of getting financial support when he is into the race, in an interview he granted last year , Shekarau said he doe'snt even own a house of himself and if he leaves Kano Goverment House he does not have a place to pack into.

But on the otherhand , Governor Shekarau can contest for presidency if the leading opposition parties AC, PPA , DPP e.t.c decided to form alliance with ANPP to defeat PDP with Shekarau as ANPP presidential aspirant . And if also General Muhammadu Buhari , Alhaji Atiku Abibakar , Cheif Kalu Uzo Kalu , Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa all decided not to contest for presidency in 2011 and also decided to collectively support , back and campaign for Shekarau , then he can also contest . And finally , if President Umaru Musa Yar'adua advise him to contest wheater under the platform of PDP if he is not contesting again or on the platform of ANPP or any other party, he should'nt even hesitate , he can go ahead and contest for presidency in 2011.

Governor Ibrahim Shekarau should resist the temptation for contesting for presidency just for the sake of contesting or overwhelmed by his previous accomplishments of dislodging a sitting governor Alhaji Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso though he did not have the financial capability for such venture and against all expectations breaking the jinx of not having second term in Kano State. Nigeria's presidency is a serious venture which all beneficiaries had the backing and blessings of incumbents and various groups of power elites. With so many hawks hovering around the presidency it is not advisable for starters like Governor Shekarau to venture into such murky waters.

The concern of Governor Ibrahim Shekarau should be centred on how his loyalist should take over from him as the opposition party in Kano state PDP led by heavy weight politicians like Alhaji Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, Alhaji Ghali Umar Na'abba , Alhaji Usman Sule Ruruwai , Alhaji Ibrahim Amin Little , Alhaji Garba Ahmed and supporters of General Muhammadu Buhari led by Alhaji Haruna Ahmadu Zago will all put all effort to have one of their own as next governor of Kano state. What happen in Sokoto state during 2007 election can re-curr in Kano state if Shekarau like Bafarawa went in search of the presidency but ended up loosing both.

The senate would have been more suitable for Shekarau in 2011 if he has become less ambitious , but even the senate will be a risky venture as the present senator representing Kano central , Shekarau's senatorial zone , Senator Muhammad Bello can only stepdown for Shekarau if he annointed him as his successor.

May be most of those calling on Governor Ibrahim Shekarau to contest for Nigeria's presidency are of the thought that if he answer their call he will throw open the gate of Kano tresury for them to have their fill as some former state governors did during the 2007 elections used their state resources to seek for Nigeria's presidency and are now today either in the custody of EFCC or playing hide and seek with anti-corruption agencies .

2011 is a bid far away from now which gives Governor Shekarau much time to fully study such calls as to either accept the call or reject them. It either of the two da mugun rawa gwamma kin tashi and da rashin tayi akan bar araha !

Yoursfaithfully

Here we go again. A lenghty piece on why someone should or should not run for president and not a line on his achievements, how he is performing presently, his dreams or even what he stands for! oh i forgot he broke the jinx and is the only 2nd term governor of kano state. BIG ACHIEVEMENT!!

The whole article is all about political permutations and dubious persons, No sign of words like citizens, nigerian people or populace, poverty, energy, education or economy

God help us.

Shehu,

While some are of the view that Governor Ibrahim Shekarau will be used to finally frustrate General Muhammadu Buhari out of ANPP even if he decides to stay put in the party after the Supreme Court delivers it's judgement .

Shehu, the underlined words above appear to indicate that you already know what the decision of the Supreme Court is going to be - ko ba akaa ne?

Further, I agree with Yankari that your article is lacking in depth and one is at pains not to accuse you of pandering to sponsors in trying to dissuade Ibrahim Shekarau from contesting the Presidency or the Senate. Precisely what are your own parameters for the ability to contest? Looted funds (Ahmed Sanni Yerima, Orji Kalu, Ibrahim Babangida, Atiku Abubakar), Ill-health and weakness of character (President Ya'rdua). Governor Ibrahim Shekarau interests me now that you mention the man does not even have a house of his own. True? If it is true, that is perhaps the kind of a person we would rather have ruling Nigeria provided he does not surround himself with thieves like Goodluck Jonathan, Babagana Kingibe, Dictators who refuse to quit the scene and have metamorphosed into politicians (imagine David Mark, Tunde Ogbeha, etc!!!). What you need to tell us, inter alia, are the accomplishments of Governor Ibrahim Shekarau in alleviating poverty in Kano and keeping thieves away from the State treasury; provision of education, Health; improvement of infrastructure, etc.

The man does not even have a house of his own? Whao! Please keep him away from the likes of Gbenga Daniel, Orji Kalu, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ibori, Peter Odili, Igbenedion, Ayodele Fayose, Alao Akala, Olagunsoye Oyinlola and the other thieves and looters called Governors and ex-Governors!

The reasons why this writer thinks Shekarau should not contest is not logical and is indeed surprising, coming from an educated person. According to him,"With so many hawks hovering around the presidency it is not advisable for starters like Governor Shekarau to venture into such murky waters". What kind of a President will be afraid to fight just because the terrain is murky! SO Shekarau will only contest if the coast is clear?

And to make it worse, he has not told us why he is a good candidate in the first place. Other than that he has no house of his own, (which personally, I disbelieve), there are no specific achievements or attributes that qualifies Shekarau for Presidency.

Shekarau is probably the worst governor in northern Nigeria presently.
A governor who could come out to say that children from his own state should not take the polio vaccine because he prefers polio to a possible future with AIDS is a candidate for genocide trial. And he had never come out to apologize or recant his statement. And that has been why Kano State supplies almost half of the world polio cases. And thousands of future leaders of this country have become disabled from avoidable paralysis due to the irrational action of this kind of individual. Meanwhile, the deadline for polio eradication have been shifted severally with no sign that it will ever be eradicated. Just bacause of a tactless statement from an unrepentant religious bigot.

The spirit of thousands of children who died and are still dying from polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases in Kano State and other parts of northern Nigeria will judge Shekarau and people like him.

SHEKARAU'S CORRUPT AND THIEVING WAYS

The following press release which can be freely accessed at the website of Sahara Reporters speaks for itself. Underneath the hypocritical façade being cultivated by the immoral Kano governor is a decadent crook imbued with a kleptocratic urge for money laundering in foreign lands. Shekarau is yet another sad demonstration of the failure of Northern leadership in its varied manifestations. Buhari should do well to avoid the company of these thieving or shameless gangsters within the ANPP called governors. It is high time Buhari gave serious thought to forming a political party devoid of the crooks in the Yerima, Umezeoke and Shekarau hue.

How Shekarau Operates His Foreign Bank AccountsJaafar JaafarI pity Governor Shekarau of Kano State who is in the thorniest times of his life – he has never been in these trying times. It is against my wish to ruffle the feathers of a sick bird but the issues at stake nudge my fingers to grab the hen (sorry pen). There is need to raise some salient questions regarding the whereabouts of our huge financial resources since the coming this administration. The prevailing theft of our common heritage under the guise of religion is traceable to our dilapidated infrastructure. But you would wonder, as many certainly would, why ever all these happen to Governor Shekarau? Are all the allegations simply fabricated to tarnish his image? Why Shekarau, our very own governor-cum-preacher? Why the self-acclaimed “saint” not sinners? If these questions linger around your mind, the only solution is for you to understand him well, whereupon you find the answer.
When I first wrote a detailed story about Shekarau’s foreign accounts, I was inundated with text messages, calls and mails from many readers. I have responded to some readers who reacted wisely but denied response to those that reacted uncouthly. I did also argue myself out particularly when I sparred with the former governor of Kano State , Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi in his residence during the last Ramadan. Though he had some misgivings initially, but before the end of the two-hour chat, shaking his head slowly in disappointment, the astute politician couldn’t help but agree with me. Given our eventual vindication, we cannot but thank EFCC for getting to the root of the matter. The commission says, among other offences, that Governor Shekarau’s name appeared in the EFCC list because he operates foreign accounts – an offence contrary to the laws of the land.
Before you quench your thirst with the following, perhaps, refreshing piece, I need to first refresh your memory by referring back to the first article, The Story of Shekarau’s Foreign Accounts, in which I wrote “…one M.I. Shekarau, a Nigerian, has a classified National Westminster Bank Plc account with a whopping deposit of £4,512,269.59 with the account number: 4113242. National Westminster Bank Plc is at Level 7 Phase 2, Pentioville Road , London , N1 9h1, England . (Ibid) The same masquerade who calls himself M.I Shekarau also operates a classified account at National Commercial Bank Plc., Head office Jeddah , Saudi Arabia with the equally whopping deposit of 2,214,905.67 Riyals. The account number is 9600438 and National Commercial Bank is located at Jeddah 21481, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia .
Aside the aforesaid, in the new petition (a copy of which this writer was served) that threw Governor Shekarau into this godforsaken list where only corrupt politicians are seen, the attention of the EFCC was drawn to the clandestine moves of transfering “some of the stolen funds” to some Asian countries by the governor where, according to the petition, Shekarau “considers safe heaven (sic).” A huge deposit of £3,112,201.50 (some part of £4,512,26.59) earlier deposited at the National Westminster Bank, the petition says, was transferred to the National Comm. Bank Plc., El-Giya, Egypt where the searchlights of the international anti-corruption watchdogs are rarely beamed. The account number is: 002-7154-015.
Governor Shekarau, the petition says, has also withdrawn $3,422,269.45 and ferried to Deutsch Bank, AG Seoul branch, 521 Seoul South Korea . As said in the petition, another deposit of M.I. Shekarau in an account in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has now been diverted to Hong Kong West Bank, Hong Kong . The account has a whopping deposit of 1,489,332.40 Hong Kong dollars.
The petitioners did not only dig out Governor Shekarau’s accounts, they have also unearthed the purchase by M.I. Shekarau of six-bedroom-flat residential building in Orleans, a highbrow area of Paris, from an agent called Mr Guy Sauvanet, at the cost of 25,000,000 CFA, which is equivalent to about 18 million dollars, and the transaction took place on the 29th July, 2006, the petitioners stated. Its is very amazing to know that the governor has, in almost all the accounts, deployed his usual masquerading tactics by changing his name from M.I. Shekarau to Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, the petition claimed.Other deposits reported in the new petition are: £5,000,000 “of public funds” he has criminally diverted into his personal account, bearing the account No. 002-964-5890, with City Bank House London WC2RIHB, UK . The next was a huge deposit of 80,000,000 CFA (about eighteen million US dollars) with BIAO AFRIBANK, 9 Avenue de Messine 75008, Paris.
This same person that loved to be called Malam but defiled his mallamness by dipping his soiled paws into cookie jar has also loaded public funds to the tune of $12,500,000 it into his personal account with CITI Bank EM/FI; 111 Wall Street, 19th Floor, New York NY10043 USA. This transaction, the petition says, had taken place during one of the governor’s visits to US last year.
But the height of this gubernatorial heist, I would paraphrase the petition, takes an especial distinction when the governor tells Kano people ad nauseum that he was visiting Malaysia to woo investors, little did the gaping masses know that the governor’s principal interest was to purchase a complete electronics factory named AL-DUN Electronics Company, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The agent for the transaction was FIRSUP Co. who facilitated the payments in two installments on the 29th November 2006 and 20th December 2006 respectively.
Other allegations not contained in the petition are the purchase of 6 million units of shares (sold at 13.50 kobo) at Intercontinental Bank where his son works, and sharing of about 400 million to top All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) officials to ratify his contest. What is baffling to many is that where would he take all the money to when our state records the highest infant mortality rate, our taps are dry, schools lacks chairs (given the state of the education in the state, Shekarau had to evacuate his son who failed WAEC from this ruin we call “government schools” to American University, Dubai). What would he do with this huge amount in this transient world?
The only rebuttal Shekarau could proffer was that “whoever claims that I own properties, I dash him.” But Shekarau should know that by default or by design, he has exposed the truth himself. It is a fact that one cannot give what he doesn’t possess. After all, bank accounts or landed properties are not like groundnuts that you can give without certificate. He should give us the certificates and we want the properties.
In the earlier article, I have tasked the Chairman of the EFCC to investigate this bunch of allegations. “…it is yet another burden on the EFCC’s shoulders,” I wrote, “ Kano people eagerly await their actions since they have not, perhaps, drawn a blank…” I am happy that Ribadu has done a good job by nabbing these avaricious sinners who have masqueraded as saints to siphon public funds. Sources close to EFCC said that the final remark of the chairman of the commission, Nuhu Ribadu, on Shekarau’s case was that “he (Shekarau) loots more than Alamiseigha and he forges certificate like a fraudster.”
Jaafar Jaafar resides at No 319 Warshu Hospital Road Kawaji, Kano .

All these obscene wealth for a single person? That's maddening and sickening. Ah this one pass me o. Compared to others, Shekarau may still be a saint! Well he should just remember the saying: one day monkey go go market, monkey no go come back o. Ask Alams and JI their safari in UK.
