A journey of a thousand miles begins with a step, yes but does it take a lifetime? All we ever get to hear in this country from the news is the fact that government (from whatever level) is going to do either this or that but you will never see it. As the promises from government in every tier increases on how they will change the economic situation of the nation so are the numbers of children traders hawking in every state, more teenagers are in different markets in the country pushing barrow instead of pushing pen in classrooms, what good are these promises if they cannot actualize what we are told they will do. Many are the promises we have heard in the last ten years, few is what we have seen in reality, roads are built in the budget, projects are commissioned on the pages of newspapers/magazines, yet not one soul in this country benefit from these projects. The Oxford's Advanced Learner's Dictionary 6th edition defines promise as "…to tell somebody that you will DEFINITELY do or not do something, or that something will DEFINITELY happen". If the government knows they cannot do a thing why promise it, integrity is not just being truthful but it also include courage to say what you are incapable to accomplish and not be ashamed. The Benin-Ore road is a case study. Promises is what we get from many of our presidents (civilian and military), governors, chairmen (chairwomen), councilors, ministers, DGs, commissioners, permanent secretaries, etc. When are we going to see corresponding actions to the many words of promises we are tired of hearing daily from them, can someone please help inform them promises don't build roads, nor does it provide employment, it is just mere words that lacks the power to change situation especially does spoken for the sake of talking or to make the people to continue to be hopeful, though the holy bible says hope does not fail but our hope in the governments of the country has failed us and we now find it difficult to believe whatever they say even if they mean well (though they rarely do). The amount of money that have been allocated for different projects in this country for the pass ten years, if properly harness will have transformed the lives of ordinary citizens, but the reverse is the case. The budget for 2009 is out but what happen to that of 2008, where did the money go, can we point to any significant project that was achieved in 2008 by any government, accountability is difficult to achieve because the morality to do that has been lost by those the fumbling constitution tells to do that. He that must come to equity must come with clean hands but the three tiers of government in every level cannot check each other since their hands are smear in corruption. If promises can build roads, they we would have the best in the world by now, if they can turn things around, then our schools would have been the best in the world and our leaders won't need to send their children even infants to go and school abroad, and if promises can turn things around then our hospitals will not be grave yards and government officials will not need to go abroad for treatment even if they have a kneel dislocation and even have the gut to say it publicly. The people does not want government to make them millionaires, but to just provide the basic amenities that make life bearable, it is the government officials that want to be billionaires before they die, we don't have such dreams, please just make the system to work, give us motor-able roads, POWERRRRRR, sound education, water, and other social amenities. We can do better without being a millionaire, we know no one can stop them from embezzling public funds (no apology to EFCC & ICPC) but can they please steal with human sympathy, you can steal half the money and use half for the project. I beg them in the name of whatever they worship in public and private to please live and lets live, this nation is for all of us so is the natural resources and its proceed, we are not unfortunate to be a citizen together with them, it should not leave a bitter taste in our mouth whenever we remember our nationality.
