Oloibiri

We waddled ashore,

Towards a desolate waterfront

Seeking with overstretched expectation

The nest of the fabled goose

We waddled ashore,

Questions twirling our hearts.

Is it made of silk or velveteen?

Is it made of silk or velveteen!

We found what we sought

Made of twigs and worthless strings!

Neglect stared at us with many eyes

And we stared back, agape ...

With lumps in our throats we hurried away

Furious looks of angry young men searing our backs

Beneath our feet the earth prostrate lay

Like a woman defiled.

Note:

Oloibiri is an Island community in Brass Local Government of Bayelsa State of Nigeria where oil was first discovered in 1956.
