Obasanjo Is Old And Infirm

At the advent of the present democratic dispensation Nigerians thought that it will be uhuru as the long years of military rule has not only dehumanize the people, but has made them to lose any sense of hope now and in the future. But in the last seven and the half years, Obasanjo who has shown that he is not the father of the nation, but a thorn in the flesh of the Nigerian nation causing them untold hardship pain, sorry and anguish. He has done several unimaginable things with brute force, showing  by all stretch of imagination that he is an unrepentant military man and not a born-again democrat. He has subjected the country to the iron law of oligarchy and indescribable anti-democratic practices in the most shameless and merciless manner.

Now in the country the management of the national economy and the socio-economic needs of the people have been relegated to the background. Today, nothing is working in the country, the roads are in a deplorable state, education and health sectors are in a shambles, and virtually all sectors of the economy are in tatters. The president has not only disappointed the nation, he has disappointed himself and this is because he is old and infirm. This is a man who claimed to be 68 year of age when in actual fact, he is 78, in fact, his son Gbenga said this much in a recent interview that his father lied about his age.

Nigerians have lived on promises since 1999 and a lot of verbal abuses from a failed leadership that blames everyone, except itself, for locking up the potentials of the country, while it is content with minimal progress on fringes interests. Nigeria in almost eight years might have acquired more acceptance abroad, but very little was done to protect the people, whether it is their general interests or matters as basic as personal security, food, housing education, health, water, electricity, employment, and justice are among items that have become more scare under civil rule.

It is for good measure, a repeat performance of illegalities perpetrated with the active involvement of the President, PDP and the federal government in Bayelsa, Oyo, Ekiti, Anambra and Plateau States, which the nation's judiciary has begun to knock into shape in, for example, Oyo and Anambra states. Irrational actions like these occurring a few months to the general elections naturally give rise to speculations that some deliberate attempts are being made by the presidency, the PDP and even the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to stultify the impending elections.

Also, recently the president, ostensibly on the advice of the ruling party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), supposedly gave the sack to the vice-president and declared his seat vacant. The vice president was simultaneously dismissed from the PDP consequently upon his decision to pick up the presidential flag bearer ticket of the Action Congress (AC), a party in opposition to the PDP. This action is not only criminal, but also illegal and without mincing words it is meant to throw the whole country into confusion. Let it be clear from the onset that our concern is not about Atiku Abubakar as a person but more about the exalted office of the vice president of the federal republic of Nigeria. Any attempt to unconstitutionally rubbish the occupant of that office represents a brazen attack on a hallowed effigy of our nationhood. Plato, the Greek philosopher, stated that, "mankind censure injustice, fearing that they may be the victims of it and not because they shrink from committing it". Our collective stand against injustice against one individual is the only guarantee that justice would be served to all because it is a truism that tyranny begins where laws end.

The British Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Gozney has described the Nigeria's political situation as confused and uncertain. He said he is worried about the apparent lull in political activities and nationwide gale of impeachments which he described as significant threat to democracy and the rule of law. Also, Professor Wole Soyinka in his New Year message said unequivocally that Obasanjo should be sent to the psychiatrist hospital to have his head properly examined. This is because of the very horrendous ways he has been handling issues of national importance. He so besotted with political power that he does not even want to relinquish power come May 2007. It was for this reason that he has been planning to become the life leader of the PDP.

It is under the leadership of Obasanjo that National Honour/Award has been thoroughly bastardized, as it is given to all the personal aides and loyalists of the president. This is a country where people are killed and the killers are never apprehended. And the question has been asked, when those who weep and curse the loudest as another life is lost to the assassin, are the very ones who, drunk with power, trample afoot the tenets of constitutionalism and the rule of law, how can they expect to be taken seriously by anyone, least of all the criminals they inveigh against? May God Almighty rescue Nigeria from the hands of Obasanjo, Amen.
