OBAMA AND THE “HAWKS” President Barak Obama is finally in the drivers seat as the 44th President of the United States Of America, the world’s greatest democracy? President Obama’s ascendancy into the most powerful office in the world is actually a landmark in America’s history and politics and indeed worlds history and politics, as his victory at the polls as made nonsense of all previously held assumptions and stereotypes. The Obama victory has also “successfully wrestled” a strong and potent factor in US politics to the ground albeit temporarily and that is “ultra conservative right wing” groups who are so powerful and influential that they control the US Industrial Military Complex . These group[s] effectively seized control of the Bush Presidency as it was during the administration of the inexperienced George Bush [JNR] that they eventually went into an “overdrive” launching several wars and overthrowing different governments in different parts of the world ,all in the name of fighting terrorism and looking for elusive “weapons of mass destruction” they even went to the extent of branding sovereign nations as belonging to an “Axis of Evil” which must be crushed at all costs! They completely emasculated the United Nations and also made it effectively irrelevant in world affairs. The ruthlessness of the ultra conservative right wing elements cannot be really underestimated or taken for granted, as we may recall the devastating damage they wrought on the Clinton Administration, who in spite of his towering achievements in office was rubbished and distracted by these groups ,remember the Ken Starr inquisitions called investigations which elevated such inconsequential issues such as “Watergate”, “Lewinskygate” into the frontbunner of world issues. This is where President Obama has to watch it and indeed be circumspect. His victory and ascendancy in US politics could be seen as too shocking and a strange development in the eyes of these groups who are still to dazed by the rise of this “upstart” from Illinois with a complicated family history. President Obama must deploy all his God given talents, high intelligence quotient and his famed oratory to ward off attacks and distractions from these group[s]. It should be expected that when these group[s] recover from this temporary defeat they are going to fight back with a sort of vengeance never seen before, hence the world should be ready for more Ken Starr like witch-hunting and mud racking which will be expectedly labeled as investigations and also high profile brinkmanship games like impeachment and assassinations should not be ruled out completely. But one thing which may indeed shield President Obama from these threats is how well he is able to deliver on his campaign promises and also justify the confidence reposed on him by the American electorates. He needs to do this fast because that was what saved the cerebral Bill Clinton from the hands of this hawks. BABS IWALEWA KADUNA STATE NIGERIA
