ANPP : WHAT MANNER OF AN OPPOSITION?

The mere mention of the name David Cameron, Prime Minister Brown will reckon that the resourceful opposition leader is the reason why his Labour led government must continue to keep its hands on the plough. David Cameron’s firmness of purpose and detest of graft is enunciated in his regular insightful debates from the war in Afghanistan to the financial crises and most recently, led to the return of monies by some MPs in the scandal that rocked Westminster. If not for anything, result coming in from Gallup polls across the country shows that the British people are taking him seriously in the build up to the next election.

Nigerians for too long cry and lament about the PDP but what can they really do when the oppositions are far from reliable. Suffice to say that with the ineptitude of the PDP any serious opposition should easily capture the minds, hearts and sympathy of Nigerians. It is to this end that the recent activities of the supposed leaders of the ANPP has reached its crescendo and left a sour taste in the mouths of Nigerians.

It is no longer news that our political parties are devoid and bereft of ideologies and principles, but always want to win power at every election day. Little wonder the words cross-carpet and decamp are recurring decimals in our political lexicon and any keen observer should know the reasons are not far fetched. A case in point is our beloved ANPP, which mostly serves as a platform for disgruntled elements that left the PDP to actualize their dreams, once successful decamp or cross-carpet to where they will be better placed to share in the spoils – nominate political appointees and affix their umbilical cords to the government at the centre.

Imagine in this age of electric cars and trains, is it not a crying shame that the governor of Bauchi state could attribute his decamp into the PDP as a strategy for the development and prosperity of the good people of Bauchi? After all has he puts it, “…I won the election not because of ANPP but because I am Isa Yuguda….” it is imperative to ask our dear governor if being in the PDP will change the formula for deriving his monthly statutory allocation for we could as well pass on this piece of vital information to the remaining non-PDP governors. Perhaps who knows if His Excellency wants to attract a gas power plant or is it a nuclear reactor, after all the Kremlin oligarchs where here to sign MOUs. So rejoice my brothers and sisters in Bauchi, your better days are here!

For too long our problem has been a dearth in leadership. If men and women of principle and integrity do not lead our political parties, please we should as well forget this democracy. What manner of opposition will make one chief Don Etiebet – a founding member of the PDP - its national chairman without being a sellout? What serious opposition will make a chief Edwin Ume-ezeoke its national chairman? A man who will immediately jump on the wagon of Government of National Unity (GNU), just to plant his son Chieme Ume-ezeoke in the federal cabinet at least to bring home the crumbs.

Let us remind the ANPP incase they might have forgotten that we look up to them to be one of the credible alternatives that should give Nigerians a choice and make this democracy virile. They should beware of disgruntled politicians who may wish to use its platform to pursue their narrow-minded ends, no matter how tempting the aroma spewing from the pot of porridge these guys may bring. ANPP, this is no time to sell your soul but to do some soul searching. Election year is around the corner; please put your house in order to make this forth-coming election eventful for Nigerians!
