It is a stale news that Ralph Uwazurike, the agitator of mordern Biafran movement, is out of prison on bail. Ralph Uwazurike's sangfroid or rather luvvy outlook in incanceration has made him a hero in some quarter. But when he was behind bar Nigeria has moved on and the hullabaloo about Biafra has wane off. Both Nigeria and international media barely mention Uwazurike's release from prison. There was no celebration in the east or anywhere else. If there was any form of celebration or jubilation, perhaps it was in Mr. Uwazurike's house. However, Ralph Uwazurike was resolute and promised to continue his peaceful agitation for Biafra, Mahatma Ghandi style.
Ther Biafran issue still hang there loosely, only this time it has been overtaken by more serious issues, one which is the Niger Delta. Yes, the Niger Delta is the problematic issue facing the federal government at present and even the Western media that determines public opinion nowadays are sympathetic to to the plight of the people of the Niger Delta.
So,would Uwazurike be rendered jobless in this new era like nuisance like Gani Adams of the Odua People Congress and his annoying copy-cat contemporaries of the Arewa People's Congress? I definately think so. Even if he decides to continue with his Biafran agitation, the Igbo political elites would only exploit it for their own personal ambitions of becoming Nigeria's president in 2011 or 2015, a post Olusegun Obasanjo's PDP has already promised the people of the Niger Delta. From every corner it is clear that Ralph Uwazurike has lost it.
From the look of things people are no longer too interested in the Biafran story except some pocket of Igbo intellectuals mostly in Diaspora who write grandiloquent articles about Biafra because they can write. I doubt much if themselves are convinced about this Biafran fairytale.
I am glad Ralph Uwazurike is out on bail. I am glad he is out when President Umar Musa Yar'Adua's government is doing marvelously great in the areas of justice, equity and respect for the rule of law and human right. I am sure if Olusegun Obasanjo had manipulated his way into his third term ambition, Ralph would still be languishing in prison with the likes of Al Mustapha, Asari Dukigbo and co. I only hope Mr. Ralph would use this opportunity and turn to a new leaf.
