Mr. Brian Ross
ABC News
New York. NY
Dear Sir,
Re: 20/20 Program Nigerian Scam
Our attention has been drawn to your program Nigerian Scam which has been airing as a web cast on the Internet and other media.
While we find the investigative work of the media station commendable and while we abhor all criminal activity of persons of all nationality, we find your deliberate country branding of this criminal activity reprehensible and do hereby protest.
We note particularly;
* The title of your program Nigerian Scams brands the country as a country of scammers.
* Your quote It says something like Im a Nigerian prince with a million dollars
did not refer to a particular case but generalized with all Nigerians in context.
* Your quote Lost his life savings to Nigerian scammers
while referring to a specific set of criminals whom you had met; who no doubt had identities with individual names you could have used showed your prejudice against all Nigerians.
* Further, your quotes Running what is known as a Nigerian Scam and in Nigeria, the scammers are celebrated as folk heroes are contradicted even in your video by the arrest of the individual criminals by Nigerian authorities.
* You also failed to show that only less than 5 percent of Nigerians are computer literate. We find it curious that you can label a whole country for the action of less than 2 percent of her citizens.
Of particular concern is the fact that ABC News and all Media Houses were invited to the launch of the US Launch of Nigeria: Heart of Africa project which held at the Ronald Reagan Building where the Nigerian official Government contingent, consisting of the Minister of Information, Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Minister of Federal Territory, The Minister of Solid Minerals as well as the Ambassador of Nigeria to the USA were in attendance to answer any questions regarding Nigeria. They also tackled the issue of the negative influence of con-men all over the world on a countrys economy.
This country branding unfortunately stereotypes all persons of Nigerian descent living or transacting businesses in the USA as scammers.
We demand that you cease and desist forthwith from this discriminatory practice immediately, issue an apology to the hardworking Nigerian Community in the USA, whom you have branded. We also demand that you allow Nigerian-Americans a fair chance to rebut your unfair characterization of their country. There are many Nigerian-Americans contributing immensely at all levels of the American society, and most of them performing beyond the standards required of them.
Yours truly,
Signed:

Eric Ula-Lisa, Chair Legal Affairs, All Nigerian American Congress (ANAC)
Stanley Onye, Chair, Political Affairs, All Nigerian American Congress (ANAC)
