The Mad Mullahs of Nigeria PDF Print E-mail
By Dr Olusegun Fakoya

It is an interesting period in the history of Nigeria , the era of “negationism”. This is illegitimate historical revisionism with perpetrators seeking to distort history by simply denying, distorting or ignoring essential facts. They employ different techniques to achieve this goal. Sometimes it is senseless denial in the face of brazen facts. Just like the clean bill of health recently given to the regime of Abacha by the trio of Buhari, Babangida and Abubakar, the triangle of evil comprising the Mad Mullahs of Nigeria. Negationism is a very powerful tool in the hands of despots as it can sometimes be used to perpetuate their hold on power and to justify their existence in history. Unfortunately, it is a time-worn technique which has been thoroughly discredited. It is thus surprising that the scions of the House of Dan Fodio could result to this cheap tactic in ganging up against the Nigerian people.

It is tempting to view the term “Mullah” as an adaptation of the corrupted Yoruba expression for Mallam, which is “Mola”. But this is not the case. The term Mullah brings to mind the excessiveness and atrocities associated with fanatics in the likes of Osama Bin Laden and his cohorts, the Ayatollahs of Iran, and the Talibans of the recently deposed Neolithic regime of Afghanistan . These notorious characters of history share a very common trait. This trait is nothing but madness. It only takes insanity to explain the level of insecurity unleashed on mankind by these agents of retrogression. It is also significant to state that these characters have also given an unwarranted notoriety to a supposedly peaceful religion – Islam. However, we stand a terrible risk of unpardonable neglect in seeking for faraway Mullahs when under our very noses are our own uncultured and apparently mentally unstable men of power (or former men of power).

Men who collectively or individually have antagonised the secular fabrics of the federation (remember OIC debacle?). Men who have abandoned their pretence to national leadership on the platform of parochial ethnic sentiments (remember Buhari arguing the case of the violent Fulani cattle rearers in front of late Bola Ige at Ibadan ?). Babangida’s claim to this title needs no further elaboration as in the words of Akintokunbo A Adejumo in the Nigeria Village Square (Hypocrisy in the Face of Truth – The Abacha Verdict) – “Babangida is widely held to have institutionalised corruption in Nigeria . He totally decimated the middle class in Nigeria , and through him, a lot of his cronies made serious money stealing the country blind.” For Abdusalam, we are entering a period of history where details of his contemptuous and murderous regime are gradually coming out. His roles in the death of MKO Abiola would still be a cause for public discourse. Here is a man who cared little about history. Not to leave anyone in doubt about the determination and intent of the trio, a few days after exonerating Abacha, he boldly called for a total amnesia on June 12, so that “ Nigeria can move forward”. Abdusalam Abubakar was the first of this evil triangle to actually signal the dawn of the Mad Mullahs, when shortly after vacating power, he decided to assume the now notorious look of the Mullahs, what with the over-flowing beard and all!

Psychosocial analysis of power emphasises the connection between power and disinhibition. Disinhibition is that selfish state of heightened sensitivity to one’s internal desires with little care for others interests and experiences. In short, it is acting on one’s desires in a social context without considering the resultant effects. It is a serious symptom, being present in most acute and chronic mental illnesses. Relating this to power, it is known that excessive power provokes disinhibition. This often happens when there are no curtailments for power. Currently, the sons of Othman Dan Fodio call the shots in Nigeria without apologies to other ethnic groupings. Thus it is no surprise that pretences were thrown overboard in their spirited defence of the Mad Mullahs for a discredited regime, alas one of their fold. Disinhibition was taken to another level in this much maligned attempt at sanctification of the evil regime of Sanni Abacha.

So much has been written, so much has been said about this latest stunt from the House of Othman Dan Fodio. It is not the purpose of this discourse to analyse the proprietary or otherwise of the infamous statements accredited to the ex-generals. However, my concerns stems from trying to understand the rationale for this sudden new-found unity amongst erstwhile sworn enemies. The animosity between Buhari and Babangida is an open secret. We are all living witnesses to numerous attempts made at reconciling these sworn enemies. Then all of a sudden, they are now the best of team mates, in pursuit of a common cause, trying to justify the unjustifiable. Abubakar Abdusalam has for one, never hidden the fact that his brief reign was to complete an assignment in ensuring the continuity of the hegemony. That of handing over power to a suitable Yoruba man, one that would be complacent and malleable to Northern interest. His role in the scheme of things leaves no doubt. It is the sudden re-approachment between the other two that probably signifies the sudden turn of things and the dangers inherent in not challenging the unfettered Northern domination of Nigeria .

Collectively, these men of yester – years threw us back as a nation by several decades. In their submission to warped ethnic agenda and contempt for the wishes and desires of the masses, they assiduously worked for the retrogression and economic impoverishment of our dear nation. One burning question is why the sudden gang-up of the trio of the Mad Mullahs? Collectively, they represent the peak of the Othman Dan Fodio clan, probably complemented by the current impostor in the person of Yar’adua. Could it be that a threat to their common interest was perceived? Thinking along this line, answers are not far-fetched. Never in the history of Nigeria has there been so much agitation for control of resources and self-determination. Previous attempts at utilising arms in the struggle to undermine the stranglehold of the Dan Fodio Empire have resulted in unmitigated disaster on the part of the agitators. The civil war and the attempt by Isaac Jasper Boro are sharp reminders. However, what is happening in the Niger Delta is of a different dimension and has refused to be submerged by the might of the infamous Empire. It is a combustion of indeterminate consequences and rightly, should be frightening to the status quo. Another possible view point for the disgraceful performance by the discredited trio is that possibly, the handwriting is on the wall about the inevitable and impending demise of their much protected hegemony. No nation can continually go through cataclysms without eventually breaking down. Nigeria is a nation in cataclysm, it is bound to crumble – sooner or later. It could be a case of foresight on their part, hence the organised resistance and hence attempts at historical revisionism.

The folly of the criminal revisionism on the part of the Mad Mullahs has been dealt with extensively by various writers. And I am quite sure that the last has not been heard of this insanity on the part of our ex-Heads of State. In an ideal state, a suggestion would have been made on the need for a form of psychological and mental evaluation for our would-be leaders. But Nigeria is not an ideal state, hence this suggestion, though appropriate, is not tenable and of course, would not be accepted. The alarming thing is that there are too many mad men in positions of authority in our motherland. The consequences include the state of inertia in which the country is, with persistent retrogression and little forward movement. Reassessing the years spent in office by the trio in the light of their publicly declared stand on corruption is like an assessment of the years of the locust. The complete sham of the so-called War Against Indiscipline (WAI) by Buhari becomes evident. We were only taken for a ride. A sampler of this is the case of the fifty-three suitcases belonging to a powerful Emir that by-passed the strict rules existing then. Buhari has always been living a lie.

It is relevant that this discourse ends with a little look at the recent statement credited to the bearded Mullah – Abdusalam Abubakar. To him, June 12 remains like an ogbanje who refused to desist from his earthly parents. Having completed the assigned task of killing Abiola in the hope of consigning June 12 to history, it remains a wonder to him that Nigerians refused to forget. And because political madness entails a high degree of disinhibition, Abubakar decided to shoot filth from both sides of his mouth. He even went a step further than the other two mad Mullahs! Nigeria , with her chequered history is now in the throes of the conspiracy of the Mad Mullahs.

ade 123,

It is not just a pity,it is as well sad that you became so uncomfortable with the submission of Fakoya. Unfortunate as it is you failed deliberately in your rantings to point out to your readers where the bigotry lies in his writings.
I could not locate a single one.He did very excellent job in presenting facts to us again about the barbaric Mullahs who are now reaping where they did not sow and who were dubiously given the chance to be leading when indeed thay know not the way.
ade123,you must be blind to the truth if you do not know that the problems that we have been facing since Independence in 1960 originated from the Mullahs and are now so monumental.
So you did not know that when one of the Mullahs,Sir Abubakar Tafa Balewa was criminally imposed upon this nation at Independence, his sole business should be how to nurse up the newly emerged Federation of Nigeria.
Unfortunate as it was, instead for Mullah Balewa go to work as expected,he directed his efforts at fighting his main leader of opposition Chief Obafemi Awolowo until he locked up the sage.
After that he neutralised Great Zik,who did more than anyone else in the fight for our Independence.
In the six years that Mullah Balewa was in power, tell your readers what did he do for this nation. Nothing except fueling problems in the Western Region and watched unconcerned as the West went aflame.
Was it not the Mullahs that murdered over 50,000 Easterners within days in 1966 including women and children?
Have they not recently repeated similar carnage against Southerners?
What did Buhari,IBB,Abacha Abdulsalam do to improve the lots of the people of Nigeria?Nothing! But these Northern military cowboys killed so much of the people they supposed to lead and looted the nation's treasury massively. They are all Mullahs!
The Mullahs who always cherish backwardness and who are hard core anti-progress are the brain behind the mounting problems of this unfortunate nation called Nigeria, except if you want to deny it. But facts cannot be denied. These are no fictions. They are living facts, except if you are so ignorant of Nigeria's political history.
Time and space shall not permit me here now to sit your muddy head down and lecture you at lenght on political affairs of Nigeria since you sounded so ignorant, maybe next time. But do yourself a favour, check and see which section of this country ruled most since Independence and see it for yourself the various havocs that the particular section had done to the people of this country.
Can you now see for yourself that there is not a single bigotry in what Fakoya presented to readers?
By your rantings{which is totally uncalled for},you left your readers not in a doubt that you are the typical "Digbolugi" that goes angry under little or no provocation at all.
Abacha looted the nation's treasury.International community confirmed it and they helped to return some of what he looted. Is that fact or bigotry?
Mullah Abacha's assasins killed Kudirat Abiola,Pa Alfred Rilwane etc. Is that a fact or bigotry?
Mullah IBB annulled the fair and free June 12 Presidential election of 1993.Is that bigotry or fact?
Mullah Abdulsalam saw to the death of the winner, MKO Abiola who was detained by another Mullah, Abacha. Is that bigotry or fact?
So who is the real "Digbolugi"? Fakoya or you, ade123/Mullahs?

None of those 'historical facts' you have expounded justify the unmistakable bigotry of the author, they demonstrate instead, example by example, your ultimate expression of your own bigotry and shalowness. Though it may be comforting for you to pretend that these are not self-evident in both the original article and you own. By colluding with the author to try to defend such farrago of nonense, unsubstantiated and wild allegations and name calling such as Mullah which filled almost every line you both have written, you both have shown clearly how much progress human race still needs to make in its process of evolution.
Bigotry is the name of the crime you have commited, so candour cannot be his or your own defense.

It is comforting to have a dissenting opinion to any article or position. However, your thread leaves much to be desired. You lack objectivity and manifested a sick desire to be heard, even at the expense of exhibiting idiocy. Nigerian Village Square is a melting pot of ideas and hence each and everyone is free to express opinions. You are equally free to agree or dissent. Such can be done in an intellectual manner without resorting to primordial instincts. You have been brash, abusive and rude. Yet you offered nothing in the alternative. So, Fakoya failed to put up historical reasons according to you. Why not use such "historical" reasons to back your argument rather than being obstinate with this idiocy which you are currently exhibing. In fact, the forum is so free for you to write another article as a rejoinder.

From the tone of your threads, there is no doubt that you are a sponsored agent of the status quo. You are anti-intellectual and really one of those not desired on this forum. Digbolugi?? This is a diseased dog that bites anyone without discrimination. The connection with this article in question is really not clear. Rather, the impression one has is that you have a rabid mind. As such, you are a poison, a danger on this forum. Contrary to what you expressed about the article, the wonder is that rabid, impulsive and reckless opinions like yours are allowed on this site.

You may need to learn to cope on a site like this. Even in carrying out the biddings of your masters, there are polite ways of achieving this. Apparently the heat is getting too much for your employers, hence the planting of hypocrites like you here. Your behaviour stinks!

This follows a similar pattern of docile writings and responses. Not unexpected from......yes, a Tiger! Now that the digbolugi is on the leash, I can see all the other beasts are being stirred.

It is quite obvious that you are very SICK. You have failed to dispute any of the of the facts (or as stated by you, examples) quoted in the main article. Yet you resorted to abusive language.

There is no doubt that you need URGENT medical attention. Once again, you are a nuisance on this forum. You think digbolugis are on the leash? To tell you the honest truth, you are the only digbolugi on this site.
Your type cheapens the integrity of any forum. You lack substance and plainly an opportunist using the avenue of a free forum for recognition. If you have any sanity left in you, simply write a common sense rejoinder rather than this abusive posture.

For me, if you persist in this lunacy and fail to accept the challenge of an intellectual discourse, then you are better ignored. Yes, Tiger! A decent Tiger of ideas and intellectual pursuits. This cannot be clear to you because you are so small-minded!!

Your conviction that the facile caricature you call 'intellectual discourse' substitutes for intelligent and logical writing betrays the current state of your mind. Your hysterical outburst reminds me of only one thing: the Pavlovian response -when you ring a bell and feed an animal- in this case a tiger- long enough if you ring the bell but do not feed it, it will salivate despite the absence of food.

That is exactly the point, Mr Intelligentsia. So go ahead and give us a non-facile carricature. Accept the challenge. Let us drink from your fountain of knowledge or otherwise keep your dirty mouth shut forever. Say, why are you so particular about this article? You must be well paid by your masters.

Concentrating on this article alone is not enough. You have a gargatuan task ahead as you may need to confront all writers on this site. Your behaviour reminds one of a Chinese adage:
"He who knows not and knows not that he knows not
Is a F-O-O-L, avoid him"

Poisoned mouth, i am personally avoiding you - got better things to do!

Ode, ari je ni toku esinsin!

Haven arrived at this senseless conclusion so easily that I- a Yoruba man- is a paid agent of 'my' Northern masters whom you have relentlessly referred to as Mullahs, then why dont you simply make the next logical inference that all those atrocities you and your sacred theoretician who wrote the article- i.e. Dr Digbolugi who has gone AWOL!- have catalogued were perpetrated with active conivance and to the benefits of certain tribal elements in Nigeria. Point at a single regime or government that has no prominent office holder from all the major tribes in Nigeria. All Nigerian dictatorships were formed around and supported by elements from all the major tribes and major religions in Nigeria! Are you too stupid to realise this? Or simply conviniently ignored it so you could perpetrate the myths of your poisonous article. Your bigoted mind, which so far has manifested its frightening and insidious forms, has not allowed you to realise that corruption and destructive governance do not have tribes, race or religion. Even when Prof Nwosu at this moment, an Ibo man, is fighting tooth and nail to absolve some of the worst criminals ever known in Nigeria. This is the apparent fact that your thick skull cannot absorb. The difference between I and your ilks is that I know that tribe or religion have absolutely nothing to do with the evil crimes these people have committed and I stand up to deconstruct the myths you believe in so passionately. Any average person knows this, so why the mad tiger attack on Northerners as a people except that you share an area of mutual interest with the delirious author.

Since you decided to partly accept the gauntlet thrown at you, I will spare one more moment. Sanctimonious ranting, that is all the gibberish you wrote conveys. You must be in a delirious state and would definitely benefit from urgent psychiatric attention. You are crude, uncouth and extremely stupid. Your personality is nothing but discord and social disharmony. In your uncontrolled eagerness to show your intelligence, alas stupidity, you failed to thoroughly read the original article. Instead, you launched straight into abuses, using uncivilised expression. If not for your insanity, it would have occurred to you that the gibberish you were so prompted into writing, could have be done without personal attacks. Ironically, you have the guts to call some people digbolugi. If the writer of the article and the other respondent were digbolugi, then you must be abugije. My reason for sparing a minute for you is the need for you to learn the art of civility in public discourse. If you claim to be so educated, then you remain a disgrace to the so called education you’ve acquired.

It is interesting that you could fervently deny being in the employment of your Northern masters simply because you are a Yoruba man. You could be a traitor to the Yoruba cause, just like people from the other tribes you gleefully referred to as supporting Nigerian dictators. Funnily, your response was more supportive of the main article and in fact complements it. If your foggy head had not been clouded by insanity, you would have realised that the focus of the article was on leaders who happen to come from the same part of the country. That fact was not of the making of Dr Fakoya. The article was based on their recent actions and comments, especially the recent one on Abacha, which happens to be topical and rightly so. You actually have the task of attacking a lot people on this issue, so that your insane crusade can be carried to a logical conclusion. On a wider scale (and this is with reference to your sanctimonious rejoinder), the article did not deal solely with issues of dictatorship in Nigeria. If you are so particular about this, you could have written an article instead of resorting to uncouth, shameful and uncivilised behaviour. If in your warped mind, you believe the author to be a tribalist, so be it. It is within his rights. However, that unproven assumption could be confronted in a civilised manner.

All said and done, your behaviour on this forum lacks civility. You joined NVS in May 2008, has posted 7 times out of which 5 are plain abuses. You really need to check yourself. The impression one has of you is that of an antisocial, destructive personality. The mere access to a free forum should not be a jamboree for uncalled for expletives and destructive behaviour. Your behaviour cheapens this forum as a melting pot of ideas which I believe is the original aim. On a final note, if you have anything personal with Dr Fakoya, why not take it out of here?
