The Darkness is Coming In The Creeks PDF Print E-mail
By Dr Gary K. Busch

Things are far worse than the news reports coming out of Port Harcourt. At an important meeting of the leadership yesterday and this morning it has become very clear that the situation in Rivers State is already out of hand.

Soboma George may well be dead but Farah is still taking his anger out on his foes. There are already over forty dead in the fighting. The creeks are crowded with fighters from several groups and the sound of army helicopters and automatic firing is incessant. There is talk from Yar’Adua of declaring martial law in Rivers. The locals, especially the militants, have said this would be an act of war against the people of Rivers. They said, in the meeting, “You want to put some more Hausa boys in charge of our region again? Never. You will not get one drop of oil out again.”

They added, “We did the bunkering for you. We did this for the army boys and the politicians. You politicians gave us the ships; you gave us the guns. You kept the money but gave us guns. We stuffed the ballot boxes for you in that wuwuru election. Is this the gratitude for our work? You now come here to kill us, to shoot us down like dogs? We will tell the world what nasty business you all have been doing in the Niger Delta. The world will know!”

Others muttered about how Yar’Adua had not kept his promises. He had turned against Ibori; he turned against Odili; he left them nowhere to go. They put in Goodluck to look after the Ijaws and to keep them from joining up with the others, but the locals paid no attention to his efforts. The removal of the two GOCs in the area removed two of the key figures in the bunkering business and the field was open for a new constellation of power.

Everyone agreed that Yar’Adua had fooled them. He didn’t follow Obasanjo’s lead but stood on his own. He already has money; he’s not a well man; and he feels he is not beholden to the PDP’s rattling structure for his success. He may be the one thing everyone in the Niger Delta fears – an honest man.

There was much discussion of whether it wasn’t time for Nigeria to have a military ruler again, but the military leadership, with their new Yar’Adua promotions have little stomach for this. They don’t see a solution in martial law; they don’t see a solution in a coup; and they fear a continuation of the killing and gang warfare. Whatever the outcome, until Yar’Adua can come to some form of compromise with Ibori and Odili Nigerians will be walking ever closer to the abyss.

There are many who have looked over the edge and are afraid of what they see. What is sure is that substantial quantities of oil are being ‘locked in’ and production will decrease. On the other hand, with oil over $72 a barrel it probably doesn’t matter as much; so this is a good time to fight it out if they must. It may also put a temporary hold on bunkering for a while. Many more will die before this is settled.

The Usual Suspects...

Obasanjo... Yar'Adua... Ibori... Sir (Dr) Peter Odili... Ah ah!? There shall be no rest for the wicked.(Isaiah 48:22 and 57:21) No rest whatsoever.

Where are those who say that Obasanjos hands are clean? I have always believed that he, Odili and Ibori had a hand in Niger Delta crises - this present one inclusive. Yar'Adua CANNOT claim to be ignorant.

Let us siddon and look.

Meanwhile a dusk to dawn curfew has been imposed in PH and we are all waiting to exhale.
Thanks oncemore for your expose.:evil::evil::evil:

Your article is nice enough in letting us know the good the President will be to the people of the region if he continues the way he's carring on. But with a strong reference to M/s Ibori and Odili as key players in this situation, I'm wont to ask a somewhat 'stupid' question; who are they?

Aside from the known fact of them being ex governors , is there somethig about them with particular reference to the situation at hand that is supposed to be common knowledge?.
For someone with little knowledge of the goings-on in the Niger Delta, it will be difficult to follow your drift which seems to be directed to a set audience which I am not part of.

It will be appreciated the more if you can expand your audience by explaining the revelance and roles of these indiviuals and GOCs regarding the situation at hand so as to
illuminate this rather beautiful but vague piece

Hi, folks!

The callous indifference of the immediate past governor of Rivers State, Sir (Dr.) Peter Odili (KSJ; KSG; JP; MB; BS (Nsukka)) to the on-going turf wars between the very groups that provided his tenure as governor the tools of grass roots coercion and political brigandage in the state, is not only very telling, but also loaded with impunity.

That Dr. Peter Odili, despite his capacity as a supposedly former "Golden Governor" of Rivers State, and the undisputed Godfather of the incumbent lame duck governor, Sir Celestine Omehia (JP; KSM), could be celebrating a frivolous 59th birthday party in Abuja, complete with a retinue of hardened sycophants and arsehole licking top state government delegations, air-lifted from Port Harcourt, led by his godchildren, the incumbent governor and Speaker of the state legislature, is absolutely unbelievable.

One would expect that, as an "elder statesman" (my nyash), Dr. Peter Odili would come out of his EFCC-induced low profile, step out of his spider hole, and roundly CONDEMN the week-long episodes of unwarranted violence that shook Port Harcourt to its very foundation. No. Instead, he hosted a gang of irredeemable clowns and political "vultures" to thoroughly massage his inordinately over-bloated ego, in the safety, calm, and emotional distance of Abuja. How callous. How indifferent. What a pity.

President Umar Musa Yar'Adua (GCFR) should speedily apprehend Dr. Peter Odili without any further delay, including interrogating all his guests that went from Port Harcourt and elsewhere to Abuja (i.e. Sir Celestine Omehia, Uche Secondus, Mr. Jonson Arumemi-Ikhide (Mr."Tear Rubber" Arik himself!), Mr. Tele Ikuru, Mr. Tonye Harry, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, all the immediate past and newly anointed commissioners, members of the state assembly, CSOs, ADCs, etc,) that went to express insensitivity of a most banal kind, celebrating a meaningless and clearly guilt-ridden 59th birthday in Abuja, while Rivers State was on fire.

Nonsense and ingredients!
I dey come, ojare. Make I come go. {I de come-o}.

Obrigado.

Don Juan-Carlos ABRAXAS (III)

"The Darkness is coming in the creeks"?

I pray your predictions will never come to pass.

I pray there will be peace in the Creeks.

The alternative is a type of confusion that will make the Biafra war a mere child's play.

Hooooly Ghooooooost...... Fireeeee!!!! Fire burn all those who are opposed to peace in the Delta. Aaameen

I have to go for Night Vigil. See ya tomorrow morning, when we would have survived the first day of the curfew.

If they did the bunkering and stuffed the ballot boxes for the politicians then they are their own worst enemies. Their lot would have been much better if they had insisted on electing their own people instead of helping to subvert the people's will. Now they deserve what they get. They should fight it out with the politicians because they are two of a kind. Bloody buccaneers! They should leave the common man out of it. I only pray that no innocent man gets caught in the cross fire.

Oil And Blood Have Always Been Flowing Together In The Niger River Delta And Will Continue Until A Responsible Government Addresses The Problem. The Present Government, Both State And Federal, Are wayo Govts So No Substantial Solution Should Be Expected From Them.
