INDEPENDENCE MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC ALTERNATIVE TO NIGERIANS ON THE OCCASION OF THE 49TH ANNIVERSARY OF NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE, OCTOBER 1 2009. This message is addressed to all Nigerians on the occasion of the 49th National Independence Day on Thursday October 1, 2009. The entire members of the Democratic Alternative both at home and abroad commiserate with all our peoples, particularly for their entrapment in 49 years of exploitation, looting of our common heritage and waste that have been their sad experience since the departure of the colonialists on October 1, 1960. The massive resources that God has blessed this country and people with do not justify the increasing poverty that is pervading in the land. The resources that are being expended remain in inverse proportion to the rising level of poverty. A number of the ruling clique including Obasanjo, Orji Kalu and Yakubu Gowon have said it on different occasions and in various words that Nigerians deserve much better than they have been treated by the ruling politicians. The blueprint of the much touted Vision 20:2020 is just being perfected with the aid of foreigners 18 months to the end of the four years government of third term of the Peoples Democratic Party in power. In twelve years of PDP government, Nigeria is not among the 16 Third World countries that have recorded economic progress since year 2000. Instead Nigeria is in the category of countries such as Chad , Niger , Malawi , Benin and Yemen, Bangladesh , Uganda , Nigeria and Madagascar that have been listed as stagnant. Indeed, the case of Nigeria is worse than being stagnant: industries are closing; agriculture remains in a primitive system except for the isolated island of foreign exploitation by Zimbabweans who are investing in Kwara State. The core issue is that the ruling parties and politicians are disinterested in the economic development of a country that is among the very richest in human history. They are only keen in converting the national resources into private wealth, a process that is being accelerated with the programme of privatisation, deregulation and liberalisation that the PDP government is pursuing to the advantage of foreigners and the ruling clique. The people of Nigeria cannot fold their arms and remain in the state of stupor and deprivation. There is a solution. The DA calls on all exploited Nigerians to join hands and build the party into a mass movement for the evolution of new politicians who are trained to be dedicated to the liberation of our peoples from the grips of predators and the rapid economic development of the country for the immediate upliftment of the quality of living of 140 million Nigerians. Otherwise, the PDP that has a plan to exploit the country for 60 years will put Nigeria in the category of Latin American countries with rich national resources but are trapped in 100 years of poverty by a few cohort of local exploiters who are in perpetual grip of power in those countries. We do not have to join that group. Organised political action is the answer. The jobs at hand are to dismantle the mess in which we are trapped and restart the immense work of building our country with the objectives of
Nigeria has the immediate capacity to pursue this people oriented programme of development. We only need to remove predators from power. We can do it and we will. For Democracy and Liberation Dr Abayomi Ferreira President Democratic Alternative
