HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT?
Demola Adeniran

How do you sleep at night?

You who has held or is still holding a position bestowed on you for providence on your constituency. Yes! Bestowed unto you by (according to you) a Supreme Being of which you went to the church and mosque to show gratitude too for ‘what the Lord has done’. Yet all you do (was) is squander that responsibility with careless impunity without even a prick of conscience. When you saw that man from your locality that you have always known to struggle in life, on your way to church or was it to the (mosque?).  You conquered the bad road that you were meant to repair in your 4x4 which was laden with cool air-conditioning…refreshing you from the massive heat of the sun whilst that man sweat it out with his family trotting along. As you tried to avoid the big gaping gullies on the road, you even honked the man and his family off the small path they were walking on.

After your pastor or was it (imam) asked the congregation to use all their energy to pray for you so that blessings and mercies continue to rain on your household, while you know the pastor had ignored people with simpler needs of just the basic requirements especially that poor widow. Who is struggling with five kids to feed, cloth and educate.  Even though your voice was not the loudest. You were the best dressed and you danced to the front wife in hand, singing while the clergy man was beaming, So you gave testimony of how you nearly got killed on your way to the village as the roads were bad or is it that it was so dark and there were no night lights to illuminate the road? However, you managed to have escaped from the men of the highway so you want to thank God and then ask Him for a continued security on your life and properties. After all, you give the church/mosque a large sum for its expansion and upkeep, so who else deserves all the prayers other than you.

When you read the morning headlines with the teachers on a nationwide strike and the University lecturers threatening to join if demands weren’t met. Did you say they could go to hell for all you care? Your kids are all planted in a good private school anyway, the older ones are abroad where a small chunk is being dished out from one of that obscure foreign account you own for their fees. You thought your heart  skipped more than once a second this morning, so you intend calling doctor Shultz to see if he could speed up your monthly medical check up abroad since you couldn’t trust the local practitioners. You heard some distant noise; you wondered where it was from. You called on one of your numerous Man Fridays, he was quick on to you and you asked him to inquire what the noise was all about? He quickly went to sought what the cause was and returned in a flash, telling you a neighbor’s child was ill and his parent’s were at your gates seeking money for his medical bills. You smiled as you wondered how the local people always knew when you were in town. Nevertheless, you insisted they let them in since, your pastor or imam once told the congregation that you are the ‘man of mercy’ since your tithe are always in the millions. The traditional ruler in your town gave you a chieftaincy title. Therefore, you will share that mercy once again from part of the money ear marked for public hospitals in your village. It is in your private account any way since you are the custodian of the state or is it the local government chair? No, you are a minister at the federal level. You do not even know what the pump prices for diesel, kerosene, petrol or gas are, since the state pay for it on your behalf. All you know is that your cars are ready to go whenever you are ready, your meals are readily prepared all you need is to make a choice. Your house has fifty bedrooms and it was reported you have six of such while in fact you own twenty and all were funded from that housing for all by 2010 money. A set of massive diesel engines power all of the houses and each of them has its own erection…big enough to room five people. You do not even bother about the noise or pollution they make since the distance of the generating set to your hill top mansion is 300yards. The sets are all positioned to disturb your neighbors, some who toil hard everyday just to make ends meet but they struggle even harder to find sleep at night after 14 hrs of daily hustling due to the heat and pollution coming from your generators.

As you feel lonely nowadays, since you are aging and no longer hold a public post any longer, all sorts are written about you in the press and you try to ignore them because they never say anything good of you anyway.

You recently, imposed someone on the people because you think your will is better than 150 million people’s. Therefore, without considering their feelings or God’s, you went ahead with the exercise. However, it was surprising you requested that the people should go pray to this same God (which you cared less about when you were forcing your choices on them) for the solution to the power problem. The problem that you,  the purported ‘father of modern Nigeria ’ could not solve? Instead, billions were expended without anything to show for it. Should God fix a physical problem with spirituality when He gave us the physical means to solve it? In addition, you had 8 years to fix the endemic problem but you just could not be asked, so you instead chose to squander and enrich yourself and your cronies. It has always been your style anyway, you understand that religion sell big time with the people, so you push that sentiment in any time you think you have a tricky question to answer. We know that you do not love us the people, so your advices are never relevant to our course. After all, for the period you were head, both your advice and actions never got us anywhere, so why should we believe you now? You even said some months back that the country is not moving forward, as if you were not part of the reasons for its decay. I am sad it took you just one year off power to realize the country is moving backwards. To think you would have labeled anyone who said such during you time at the helm as a ‘phd’ (pull him down) person or a ‘bastard’. Hey! How about this for another headline? ‘Father of modern Nigeria could not make Nigeria modern.

When you say your hubby did not steal, because he is no more to defend himself hence you got people of like minds and organized a session to try and rubbish our memories when you could have been better off hushed up in low tones, praying for forgiveness for the atrocities that is connected to you and your family. Or as a good wife did you asked your late hubby, where all the money you have came from? We know we cannot do much other than lick our wounds and shout on here.  However, please leave our sanity alone. We are not mad; we know your hubby stole billions. Nonetheless, it does not make any difference if he stole to you. After all, the soldier before him stole and so was the one after him and the one after the one after him… so together you all can chorus ‘we did not steal’. But please, do not do so on our national space, go laugh about it in your mansions that you built with stolen wealth.

When all you do is, fulfill your wildest fantasy and crisscross the world all in the name of learning how the lower chambers work in the established democracies. With delegates huge enough to fill a basketball court catered for with state funds. Months on, you are hardly at home. I ask you. What is it about democracy that you need to travel the world to learn? Now i even learnt you and some of your like minded 'power miss roads' are going to the olmpics while the nation is in nothing less than coma?. The last man who did that on state funds gave little in return as president. So sit at home and spend quality time to pass worthy bills. On the other hand, haven’t you considered calculating the expenses incurred by these junketing? The amount will pay the striking teachers in your constituency for months!

Do not think these will last forever, for the tenure that will soon be 1 year old will fast turn into 4years . A while ago, I saw your picture in one of the national dailies in NYSC regalia with few colleagues. If really you did do the service, though i know as one who came from a rich background am sure your experience was blissful as compared with thousands of others who faced daunting prospects then and now. With no jobs and facilities to encourage self-employment on ground, you should know where your priority lies as the most highly placed youth ever in the nation’s history.

The question once again is how do you all sleep at night? Do you reflect on your day? I forgot to ask. How was your day anyway? Filled with Self-serving, chest thumping and coffers looting activities huh? The roads can go bad, the hospitals can pack up, the teacher can go on strikes, and the nation can be in darkness for all you care. Your comfort and that of your family is guaranteed but spare a thought for posterity. You may have built a dynasty or hoping to build one with looted funds at the detriment of state development and while you acquire this ill-gotten wealth, the functionality of the state will collapse as a result. But it will definitely consume everyone in it.  That is why your convoys as a Governors with all the securities are being attacked or why your aged fathers will be kidnapped. Then your children will grow up into a society that has decayed because you stole and hindered its development.

In everything. . . . .give thanks to God! Including poverty.

I sleep very well at night over here. One of the reasons I do sleep well is that I am NOT over there. I could never sleep well at night over there. Having your family attacked like 4 times by armed robbers in your childhood will definitely keep you awake for the rest of your life.

Why the the robbers do not have the nerve to attack the looters is what I cannot understand. Harrassing innocent citizens all over the country!

Sheeeeeeeeeeeesh!

How can anyone sleep well.?

We Nigerians are just very stong people. The Trauma of 3 armed robbery attacks over 6 months and several other close shaves have stayed fresh in my memory for over 10 years but as Nigerians we learn to move on . I never visited any doctor but I know the trauma is a big problem in my life today. I am always paranoid and I keep looking out of my window. I am sure if I go to a doctor I will be diagonized with a very serious case of some big word medical condition

My Late Grandmother, God bless her, quips often "Olowo oni sinmmi" literarily meaning the rich don't rest talk less of sleeping. And that is even reffering to the "legally" rich.

My submission-No, they don't even get to doze talkless of sleeping. Its an unaffordable luxury for the poor at heart, but rich in the bank!

I could not agree more. Only by the grace of God. There are some things a child sees and it never leaves you mind. But we have to move on somehow.

You have to learn how to heal from within so you can at least have normal relationships with loved ones. Therapy helps trust me. Just talking and sharing. It helped me a lot.:)

It is well.
