Doomsday Prophecies For Nigerian Football? PDF Print E-mail
By Demola Adeniran

One of the few closest person to me have certified me as an optimist...now whether that applies when reality says otherwise I absolutely do not know; but I will certainly believe that as long as there is a' legal back door to make headway' then make headway and do not bury yourself when there is a possibility to explore life. That has always been my attittude. I am a strong admonisher of opening oneself for opportunities. A friend once told me 'There is no sitting duck luck in life as there must have been some hardwork prior to you being lucky'. You can not win the lottery without playing....more like physics 1st law of motion ' A body is at rest or constant in velocity unless an external force is applied'. Now the external force here is the hardwork. You being at rest or in constant velocity is not wanting a change in your situation. Your luck can not change if you dont provide various options of making it change.

I saw the Nigerian U-20 Team 'Flying Eagles' lose 2 straight games in the on going World Youth Championship in Egypt. This is a Team that the whole Nation sees as the Redeemer of Nigerian Football which has been in doldrums at Senior Levels in recent past. Reasons being that the Coach Samson Siasia is very popular and so loved by Nigerians that most people want him as the Coach of the National team the Super Eagles rather than the seemingly dull Amodu Shaibu. Trust me I am not at all any better than either of the two but I could just be in a better position to profess that in modern day Football, determination expressions and energy do not win you matches... getting the key part done effectively does. In the 2 games in Egypt I saw the former being expressed utmostly by a Nigerian Team who wants to excel by sheer strength, expressions and determination but not how to score. Goals win you games and not having a focal point to convert chances or some people who are responsible for putting chances away in your team kill your chances of winning matches. That was the bane of Siasia boys in the 2 games played so far. The Kings of Expressive football are Brazil but they have long done away with it in order to win Matches and Tournaments.(See today's Tim Vickery's blog on bbc). They hit you with dead ball and counter attacks, foul you when necessary and damn the yellow cards. They are in short very pragmatic that European Teams in next the World Cup SA 2010 will find them a tough customer in every department. As evidenced in the game against Argentina in Rosario early this month. Brazil hit Argentina with 2 set pieces and a counter attack to get their result while Argentina were bothering with all the finesse. Perhaps the most appalling part is the fact that most Nigerians have resigned their faiths; thinking with these performances so far and the not so bright promises of future events, it may not be until 2014(according to most opinnions) before Nigeria have a say again in Global Football. Do I beleive that? No I dont beleive that is the case, simply because; while I agree that 2 losses in a group game is enough to send you home in any World football competition, it isn't enough to send you home in a competition that has 24 Teams participating, with 16 teams to make the 2nd round. I know this depends on so many factors or Mathematics but the key is that you must do your own part of the Mathematics in order to have a chance. We must not wait till 2014 when there is a chance to correct the course towards 2014 today...right now. The Siasia boys must win Tahiti and score GOALS!!! that has become their Mathematics of which they do not know the cut off points to attain success just yet. Siasia perhaps is like Maradona who taught his boys how to entertain but forgot to tell them to score and defend when you dont score. If by any chance they hit a goal rush in their next game it might just be the tonic required psychologically...that might make them believe... perhaps make us beleive too.
