Our Own Einstein And The Expressway Churches PDF Print E-mail
By Damola Awoyokun

Damola Awoyokun

ALBERT Einstein's eminent successor, Stephen Hawking sometime ago began a journey to South Africa on an initiative to find African Einsteins through an Institute For Mathematical Sciences based in South Africa. Said Hawking: 'The world of science needs Africa's brilliant talents, and I look forward to meeting young Einsteins from Africa in the near future.'

Case 1: In South Africa between the N1 expressway linking Johannesburg, the commercial capital with Pretoria, the political centre is the Silicon Valley of the telecom and computer giants. South Africa is home to African headquarters of many of these world corporations. Between Lagos the commercial capital and Ibadan, what do we have? The fastest growing blue-chip corporations in Nigeria: the expressway churches.

Case 2: A 24-year-old graduate with second-class upper was diagnosed with breast cancer. She informed her mother who then told her church prophet. Prayers, fasting, vigils, alms giving, mountain pilgrimages were immediately ordered. Her daughter was never allowed to go back to University College Hospital (UCH) for chemotherapy that was sufficient since the cancer was still very young. The man of God strongly objected since it meant the mum was doubting the power of the Almighty. It was when the girl's breasts turned into a rotten pair of plantains that she was returned to hospital and, died. While her body was still warm in the grave, the man of God visited the bereaved family, prayed for them and said 'the death was God's will, if not it won't have happened.' If I were God, I would spit on that prayer and damn him for murder.

Case 3: Mid-nineties, in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife, the number of weekly religious meetings leapt from 19 to 120. Every evening, to get a free class where you could quietly study was tough. When you got one, be assured that preachers would soon barge in to dismiss studying as irrelevant, it is eternal life that counts, that the world would soon end as there is now abundant fresh evidence; or: that there is a big man of God from Lagos in the sports stadium working miracles, casting out spirits of cultism, poverty, indecent dressing or curing AIDS; or that failure in exam is a spiritual attack from home which needs spiritual defence, you must not miss your blessing time at the sports centre. It was not surprising when last year in that same university some students that were supposed to be writing their exams were found in the forest awaiting Rapture.

The problem of the expressway churches in every nook and cranny of the country is not essentially in their mushrooming, it is in the way they barge into our minds and corrode the roots of our thinking with what they preach. They start with fear. And fear like HIV is very polite and diplomatic, its effectiveness is in being unassuming, going on easy till it shatters your immune system and leaves you gullible to all sorts of senseless teachings and practices. 'Come and thank God for your life, many slept yesterday, but couldn't wake up today, that you woke up is not your doing but, or: ' I know one man who did not pay his tithe for only one month his son became ill, he sold land and properties to pay hospital bills, his son still died.' Or 'repent now, tomorrow may be too late.' Without enacting fear and promoting its negativity as a normal state of mind - fear of eternity, of hunger, of curses, of tomorrow, fear of enemies, real or imagined, fear of God - no religion would prosper. Fear is after all, the masterpiece of the evil one.

In the North, a shepherd boy with a small stick (saanda) can order around thousands of cows with big-horns on their heads like PhDs. In the expressway churches, anybody with a pocket-size Gideon bible in the hand can tell tens of thousand of 'educated' people that 2+2 = 13 has been revealed as the truth, they will jump up and shout Ameeen and begin to dance around! That is the depth to which we have sunk. Reason and scientific thinking are no longer a matter of fact. Instead of the unrestricted and diligent exercise of the intellect to problems, we are told solution is in praying for divine intervention, we are told we are in end times and so earthquakes, cyclones, AIDS are fated. We can do nothing.

Weirdly, Christianity no longer calls itself a religion, it is a way of life. So every time on any day you turn on your TV or radio, in the buses, in the offices, markets, on the Internet, a preacher is there retailing some messages or emails of mental bacteria. Little wonder there is an outbreak of mediocrity all over the country. In serious countries, they are building heavens and making lives better for their citizens, in Nigeria we are bringing about hell so as to justify why we have to go to heaven.

Ask kids what they want to be in the future; many are now answering 'pastors.' Why? 'To do miracles and save lives.' Not the technological miracle of space technology or medical saving of lives. It is a la the expressway jamborees. One pastor justified September 11 saying the World Trade Centre was like the biblical Tower of Babel (human attempts to reach God.) God 'had to' destroy it. Other stupidity aside, but why are the lofty achievements of human thought seen as an affront to the supremacy of a most high God?

The remarkable solar eclipse of two years ago happened at the day and hour it was predicted to happen for 4 minutes 45 seconds by instruments of science and technology. For over 2000 years now, Jesus had failed to come as constantly predicted by the Bible and men of God, yet a lot of quality time, energies and resources are devoted uselessly to this otherwise eclipse of reason. Meanwhile the next solar eclipse's date, hour and minute has been predicted 25 years in advance. It will happen. So which should merit our trust, thinking or faith?

Young African minds eager to be the next Einstein or Hawking must start by rejecting their being made sheep that the religions constantly find fulfillment in doing. Sheep is one of the most stupid animals in existence. Have you seen how they cross busy roads? Young minds should aspire to be goats. A goat believes in itself. It is smart. It does not take no for an answer that is why it always seems to be constantly disobeying. It is never satisfied with the status quo. Through the Enlightenment, Europe began to see progress when they squashed the prevailing grip of religion over their minds. Eric Hobsbawm, a British Jewish historian, said Jews began to make startling impacts in all disciplines after the 18th century when they unchained themselves from the application of Mosaic laws to the very last details of their lives. The laws clogged their minds and imagination, shutting them off from the world. So their startling achievements consist not in being God's chosen people but in the conscious rejection of that identity.

Einstein said of his deep religious childhood: 'Through the reading of popular scientific books I soon reached the conviction that much in the stories of the bible could not be true. The consequence was a positively fanatic orgy of freethinking coupled with the impression that youth is intentionally being deceived by the state through lies; it was a crushing impression. Mistrust of every kind of authority grew out of that experience, ' What a genuine goat.

Einstein was noted to have stated "God does not play dice." I firmly believe in the existence of GOD, to the issue of expressway church, the bible foretold years ago that in the last days many fake pastors shall arise.

A HUGE ERROR !!!
Yoruba people say "omode o mogun o pe lefo" in pidgin English "small pikin no know medicine he call am vegetable"

True the "expressway churches" may be nuisances but you've taken it the wrong way with your analysis.

All the GIANT LEAP in science, engineering e.t.c came from INSPIRATION/INTUITION. The SOURCE of such kinds INSPIRATION/INTUITION is completely EXTERNAL to the human being body, spirit and soul. Such inspiration/intuition are not taught, they don't come from physiological/biological sources within the human being or from the environment they live.

The God of Israel knew people will be making statements such as highlighted above. That's why He warned the children of Israel that when they prosper in the land not think it's the work of their brain.

In modern times we are about to see the complete downfall of a nation that abandoned God (whom their founding fathers made the foundation) and believe their prosperity/superpower status came from their ingenuity. Let's watch and see if their economic theories, ingenuity, stimulus/bailouts will work. It's irrelevant whether you believe in God or not, just watch! We're living in very interesting times indeed !

Psalm 127:1 Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.

Deuteronomy 8:10 And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
11 "Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today,
12 lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them,
13 and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied,
14 then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,
17 Beware lest you say in your heart, 'My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.'
18 You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you POWER to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

There have never being a generation like ours, where people are so clever, very smart, highly sophiscated and well read like Mr.Damola but the same time very ignorant. We have so much smartness and cleverness mixed with stupdity among people these days, knowledge about everything but not about God.Sir, whatsoever we are doing or learning in this whole world matter if its not related to God and what God wants us to know,we will be wasting our time and still be {ignoramus}.
The present developement in Nigeria is obviously because God is raising Prayer oriented Churches that are cleansing the land of the Demon loaded country and ushering in the new era of good.Yes there may be some bad eggs among the Churches twisting these divine plan for Nigeria but the end will justify the means. My advise for any knowlegable person in Nigeria now is to join in this Glorious movement of the Holy Spirit and stop complaining of the Churches activities.

What do you do if you were a graduate and has been roaming the streets for 4 years without a job, even an average one that could give you 3 square meals a day?
What do you do when through government insensitivity, your job has been taken over by an Indian Mechanic, Chinese gardener, Lebanese Welder or Phillipino Electrician as a result of 'Privatization' and encouraging foreign direct investment?
what do you do when the hospitals cannot provide basic health services for you and your poor family and the alternative is the private hospital where you have to deposit thousands of naira to be treated for malaria?

What do you do if you cannot enjoy uninterrupted power supply and have to fan yourself and battle 'Tiger' mosquitoes all night long?
What do you do if you have to pay more for petrol than in countries that are importing the commodity while public officials enjoy free petrol for their numerous cars?

What do you do if your taps are always dry, roads are death traps and public schools virtually dead?
What do you do if you are seeing nonentities in the name of public officers and godfathers looking well-fed, prosperous and enjoying the 'dividends of democracy' while you are suffering?

What if and if and if and if?

You put everything in the 'hands of God' and become a fanatic (Muslim or Christian) and start preparing yourself for a better life in the hereafter since here and now, it seems all hopes are lost for you to enjoy decent life and live like a human being.
Who are the winners of this shift in thinking? Smart Nigerians who are stepping in to provide hope for the hopeless and making a fast buck to boot! There is nothing that we can say or do to prevent people from 'discovering God' along the express ways or in the numerous Islamic organizations sprouting up daily to mop up the 'excess liquidity' in the system through their services.

My advice to the writer, do not bother to write about topics like this even though you are perfectly right because you might start another cruzade/Jihad on NVS:D:D:D
Good day.

Albert Einstein said one important thing Nigerians must listen to and not this religious bigotry; he said: ‘you cannot solve a problem standing at the same level the problem occurred’. This covers all human endeavours – from social, through economic to political problems of individual, society and nation.

Nigeria and Nigerians need to up their game to escape this debilitating trap of mental and material poverty. I find this analysis atheistic and unnecessary. I personally avoid religious arguments because it leads to nothing really but ample waste of time. Our problem is not religion but our quest for miracles it promises. If our concern is ever about living right and contributing our quotas, this scrappy analysis will be scarcely necessary. Without these express way churches, crime will be much higher today and predictably so.

Karl Marx said the philosophers have interpreted the world but the task remains to change it. The task before all of us is changing our nation Nigeria to something commensurate to her age. Express Way churches are thriving on the gullibility of the poor masses, masses made ever more vulnerable by the increasing poverty in the land. This is far more worrisome than the churches that have managed to keep millions out of crime induced by poverty and lack of responsible and responsive government.

A young friend in UK once told me what made me sleepless for some nights. I had asked him why he wasn't going to church and he, in turn, asked me to say Our Father. I did so and when I was done , he simply told me if I go to church to pray to God for daily bread, his government long took care of that for him and their citizens. It was a shame I couldn't say the same for my country, Nigeria.

Everything depends on how we see religion; to some going to church is not more than to be married or be buried. But if seen as a way to moderate how we live and not for it to live our lives for us, it will all be different. I believe religion is the former and for this reason, I want to see miracles most seek in our churches as an exception, not the rule. Our quest for miracles is so strong that even graduates are fatalists and go for no medical checkups and rely on holy water and anointing oil for ailments that are clearly biological and medical. How do you defend an HIV patient's decision to see his pastor rather than a doctor for ARV?

The bible predicted the end of the world but did not give a specific date, yes! Christ himself had said: only the father knows the precise date. The whole of the Book of Revelation only predicted the signs and not a date, so I do not see how region has failed in that regard. Old Testament tells us too, that certain things are hidden until an appointed. The exact date for the end of the world is one of such and may have been kept so for the value the unpredictability to behaviour modification.

Again if science is more precise than religion on such matters, why hasn’t it( science) predicted the date the world will end?

Apart from most of us being far more wayward if we knew the world isn't ending any soon, why the date is unknown is also partly because much will depend on our actions, which governed by freewill, cannot be scientifically computed the way we do 1,2,3. For example, it is within our powers to detonate the nuclear bombs and it will be all over here and now, the way it happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where till date, grasses can still not grow. It is also in our power not to, as we have not, graciously.

Again, since we do other things that have brought on death by installments, the world will certainly end, if we fail to change our ways, because if you look at it, things are only getting worse globally and will, if it continues, bring the world to a halt someday, somehow. You do not need the Bible or the Koran to tell you this. It could be today, next month, next century, or next millenniums. The choice is ours; it all depends on how quick we want it. Iran and Korea are on course to bringing it closer if the world does not stop them now.

In order words, the date is not with religion, it is with human conducts, a lot of which depend on what we freely choose to to act, good or bad. Many will say this does not permit the power of prediction to do its work. But if you really look at it religiously, the whole essence of religion and Christianity/Islam, is it not so that man can delay or avert such calamity?

Isn’t this why Nostra Demos, the man who saw tomorrow, told us in his prophesies that was neither Christian nor based on any religion, that it is in our power to avert the 3rd word war? Have we heeded that secular prophesy since we have refused that of religion and the whole nations of the world are engaged in one war or the other including Nigeria?

And by the way, the world ends for anyone who passes on, doesn’t it?

If I ever got into power at state or Federal level. I will start bulldozing these NEW AGE EXPRESS CHURCHES one by one. The ones that remain I will TAX them heavily and see how long they last for.

It is such a stupid way of thinking and shows a sub-human type of thinking that resorting to church and God without trying to help youself will suddenly alleviate the jobless masses. God is not a fool!!! A non-believer who works hard and is patient will get his rewards, on the other hand an imbelic born again bufoon who does not try as hard but just thinks he can pray and give his ill judged 10 percent offerings to his sweet mouth pastor will suddenly change his fortune.:frown:

A quick example I have been doing some building in Nigeria, there was a very small DIY Solar power kit I wanted to monitor. It was so easy any fool can do it. I had to travel back and forth between Asaba and Benin and needed someone to monitor and just take some readings every hour. A 26 yrs old jobless graduate was hired. After the 4th day he was late, the following week he said he had to leave early for 4 days because of prayer vigil. I fired him on his 13th day.

Now tell me what has your church got to do with you turning up on time. What kind of stupid vigil and prayers are you doing that you expect to leave at 3 pm and you are two hours late. Now tell me will God sanction that type of stupidity. Even Jesus Christ himself worked. Most Nigerians need to get it into their THICK SKULLS that what you sow is what you will reap. Church is just another way to run away from reality. The shear number of churches per sq meter in Nigeria and they way we advertise God, Nigeria should be the closest thing to heaven on earth....NOT!!!

Speaking of which, its a pity I am a bit shy. Maybe I should start my own church. PM me for suitable church names:D Nonsense!!!

If mushroom expressway churches are pointers to fake pastors, then should we really be beating our chests that they are spreading like wild fire in developing countries, particularly Nigeria?

Don't know what race you belong to, but it seems people like you never think anything good about black people. So you think the election of an African-American as President means the beginning of the collapse of that nation? If that happens do you really think the world will be a better place? For your information, the President is going to succeed beyond your wildest dreams! Just you wait and see.

The first time I read Mr. Awoyokun's piece last year in the Guardian, I was provoked to write a rejoinder. I cautioned myself by reminding myself that freedom of opinion is just that: 'opinion'. Seeing him now posting it on NVS, the bastion of interactive stimulation encourages me to make some mild observations.

The thrust of Mr. Awoyokun's piece appears to be the exaltation of secular education (read 'technology) as an alternative to the perceived exponential explosion of what he xterised as 'xpressway churches'.

He further takes a swipe at Christianity as the main cancer affecting Nigeria's progress and ability to take its place within the commity of nations as a technological power.

CS Lewis (a professor of Medieval Literature), a prodigy of equal intellectual depth as Awoyokun's Einstein (I do have the greatest respect for A Einstein) though employed in the liberal arts observed:

Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.

Despite the advances made by man in technology and the efforts of Einstein and his disciples in advancing the age of science, man's basic propensity for taking nature's (I don't want to use 'God's) gifts and applying them to evil uses has not decreased, but actually grown exponentially. Many of Einstein's discoveries were applied primarily to military uses, causing the deaths and misfortunes of millions; and they have remained foundational to the propagation of weapons of Mass Destruction today.

Yes there are scientists robed in the same scientific attire as Einstein that have sold their conscience for money and lend their skills to research that threaten the destiny of mankind. Do these make Einstein or ALL his disciples personally evil? No. Some of his works have also been used to initiate discoveries that have also saved the life of millions.

Even in the West, much is being uncovered about the evils being perpetuated by multinational heathcare industries (with the passive connivance of regulatory agencies) in promoting drugs and lifestyles that have dibilitating impact on the lives and health of millions (see The China Study, by Prof T. Colin Campbell - www.thechinastudy.com) for the sake of the almighty $$$.

Clearly, technology without values also creates its own kind of hell populated by devils who see fellow humans as expendable guinea pigs and lab rats for their 'scientific advancements'.

I have had occassion to take a swipe at excesses of some Nigerian 'expressway churches' for their apparent insularity to the pains and decay around them. H/e, I consider it rather bold to castigate ALL Nigerian Churches as Awoyokun has so pendantically done. It is more bemusing to heap all the blames of Nigeria's current underdevelopment at the feet of these same churches.

Mr. Awoyokun write so boldly from the safety of his UK residence without taking the time to investigate the facts on the ground that show that many Nigerian churches actually 'walk the walk as well as talking the talk'.

As former graduate of Great Ife myself, I am grateful for the values I learnt from the Christian community of that great institution that have helped me maintain sound values within the Nigerian business and religious space for much of the last two decades. The fact that a few became victims of extremism takes nothing from the experience of several thousands who experienced the dynamism of Ife's religious space.

I know of several churches who work with Area Boys, prostitutes, and other perceived dregs of society by rehabilitating them, educating them and empowering them financially to take their place as responsible members of the society. I recently missed the wedding of a young member of my church who was an area boy adopted by the church and trained thru university. He's now writing his stockbroking exams.

Blaming Nigeria's woes on churches alone is myopic to say the least. Several of those who called us 'preachers' as undergrads ran out of Nigeria at the first opportunity they had. They left the Nigerian political space in the hands of drop outs, misfits and the unscrupulous. Over the intervening years, we all watched as these class of people 'took over' our political and economic institutions and in many cases drove out those who were adding value for flimsy reasons.

As the economy became bastardised and the common man pauperised, religious institutions bacame places of solace for many who never before gave 'God' the time of the day. In several instances, I witnessed acquaintances in diaspora's unbelief and barely concealed angst/envy on seeing former student 'SU' colleagues they considered 'NFAs' commanding a respect and status as religious leaders, that they considered them disentitled to.

Yet the truth remains that many of these stayed in the Nigerian 'arena' and their success remains an off shoot of the omissions of capable Nigerians who 'abandoned ship' for easier climes and left the ship of the Nigeian state in the hands of the present generation of 'vagabonds in power'.

Coming back to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway; Mr. Awoyokun should note that that axis was earmarked by previous administrations as an industrial hub. H/e, when the industries fled and factories were closing due to the mismanagement of our national economy by vagabond Christians, Muslims, Animists, Atheists and Agnostics in power, visionary churches led by RCCG took up the challenge as an opportunity and have transformed a barren stretch to what it is today.

The truth was there was a vacuum; these churches stepped into that vacuum. By doing so, they provided jobs for thousands. They provide homes for many displaced by avaricious Lagos landlords, and have stimulated the economic growth and developments of their host communities.

True, there are several negative examples and many mistakes by even the sincere amongst them; but the fact is they are trying to DO something based on their values and beliefs. You may not agree with their beliefs or the results, but the best you can do is do your own and let us see.

Seating down in UK/US etc and pontificating on how its done in South Africa or America will not change the rot that is making the little these churches are doing to become a benchmark of criticism or praise. South Africans STAYED in their economies and fought for the changes they desired. Americans fought and still fight for their freedoms.

Nigerians mainly TALK:rant:, TALK:no:& TALK:pray:.

Ciao.
