Shadows, my country, shadows, yet more shadows. In some cultures, an unattended shadow was thought to be similar to that of a ghost, a flicker of a life unable to end for some reason. In Nigeria presently, there is an unattended shadow of multifaceted ghost especially that cast by Mr. President. Who really is Yar’Adua? What is the polarity within the soul of Yar’Adua? Is Yar’Adua conscious of the complexity of the shadows in him? In everything he does, his shadows followed him. In his hidden agenda for going to Saudi Arabia, in failing to admit to fellow countrymen and women that he is sick the sick president derails the sick nation. Paradoxically, our ability to see something of the shadow within ourselves sharpens our ability to recognize the shadowy actions around us. Has Umaru Yar’Adua recognized the shadows within him? If he is unable to discern the con artist in him; the thief who stole the mandate of the people in 2007; the hypocrite under whose watch the EFCC is ridiculing the corruption and corrupt practices at the power sector; the liar who couldn’t admit to the country that he is sick as if we are not all sick (including the country); how would he be able to recognize the behavior and shadows of the criminals around him? In their repressed motives for retaining power the sleeping president surrenders everything, everything to the agents of evil, theoversized meticulously crafted dragons that are holding the country captive. My question: what would Jesus Christ have done as Umaru Yar’Adua? Would he have allowed these seductive ideologies, this charismatic madness of the cronies at the cabinet and national assembly to prevail? Would Christ have allowed the participatory madness and shadows at EFCC and National Assembly that led to the prober being probed and now prosecuted for daring to challenge the evil in Nigerian System? Did Jesus Christ not tell his mother; “woman, what have you to do with me?” Was it not the son of man who in a fit of rage threw the money renders out of the temple? What stops Yar’Adua from emulating Christ and throwing the cabals out of Aso Rock and his administration? What prevents Yar’Adua from taking such inflammatory and revolutionary actions to disengage from his political godfathers and mothers like Christ did? The paradox Umaru Musa Yar’Adua must face is that to really grow up, he must leave the home of his captives. He must begin to own some portions of his rich shadow and authority. UMYA should know that the secret of authority does not come from a piece of paper, taking of oath or stealing of the peoples mandate with the help of Iwu the Supreme Court. The secret of authority is to attain its own authority, by whatever, means, whether approved by others or not. To be a full adult and to be fully in control, Yar’Adua has to know what he wants and do it. What happens when “good men” are themselves agents of evil? What if the “goodness” in Yara’Adua is the evil that has cast a very long and dark shadow that will end up destroying what is left of this country? For Yar’Adua, the acquisition of personal authority means that he risks telling the truth to the corrupt and power thirsty dragons he has surrounded himself with. But just like Jesus Christ, he has to answer the call to individualization and unchain himself. Assume full authority by chasing away the cabals around him. Failure to do so will not only be a personal shadow issue but an abrogation of his obligation to this sick country. Shadow’s length changes dramatically throughout the day. The length of a shadow cast on the ground is proportional to the cotangent of the sun's elevation angle. Near sunrise and sunset, when θ = 0°, cot (θ) is infinite and shadows can be extremely long. With a sleeping president the country is either at midnight, sunrise or sunset with a huge shadow hanging over us. But if the sun passes directly overhead, then θ = 90°, cot (θ) = 0, and shadows disappear completely. An American historian, poet and novelist Carl Sandburg said that “Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance. Unfortunately for us a sleeping president cannot dance to bring the sun directly overhead for this present shadow to disappear except he start acting like Jesus Christ.
