Divided They Stand: 2007 Igbo Day Celebration

On September 29, 2007, the Ohaneze Ndigbo will hold a parallel Igbo day celebration in Enugu and Awka by its two factions, by Ifeanyi Enenchukwu and Dr Dozie Ikedife respectively. This is in the absence of last minute effort at preventing the crisis from getting to the peak. Ikedife’s group had recently asked the court to order Enenchukwu and his members to vacate the organization’s National Secretariat at No. 7 Park Avenue, GRA Enugu to enable them move into the secretariat as if the battle is about structure and not heart of Ndigbo.

It all started with the third term agenda and the support of presidential candidates in the 2007 election. While the old executive of Ohaneze led by Prof Joe Irukwu had sympathy for PDP, Dr. Dozie Ikedife and group were championing for Igbo presidency and of course Orji Uzor Kalu. The rest is now history.

Now, while the likes of Ikedife flanked by C. C Onoh battle it out with Enenchukwus flanked by Iwuanyanwu, the ordinary Igbo man goes about his/her business believing that whatever quarrel they have has nothing to do with them. They’ve come to believe that divided “they” stand. Some people are definitely benefiting from the ongoing crisis in Ohaneze that has been battling to really break into the hearts of Ndigbo.

The continued struggle for the leadership of Ohaneze is for its continued portrayal as a relevant mouth piece for Ndigbo. But the gong has never really resonated across the Igbo land and whatever may be left of it now is broken and generates discordant tune.

My question however is: Is this the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation Ndigbo has been praying for? Are these materialistic and egocentric individuals that have abandoned the primary cause of articulating a consensual way forward for the Igbo nation the kind of leaders we need? If not, what are our alternatives? Or should we allow mediocrity to prevail in Igbo land when we can do better?

My concern is who wins the heart of Igbo man in the battle for raising the political consciousness and plight of Ndigbo? Is it the Ohaneze, MASSOB or a third force that hopefully will spring up after the settling of the dust?

Every year, we organize the World Igbo Congress in one big city in US; invite leaders that stole the mandate of the people in Nigeria and those in US seeking political relevance to come for the usual empty talk and spectacle. Igbo Day Celebration gives the sycophants at the corridors of Aso Rock the opportunity to jet into Enugu and finalize on which “deal” is maturing and ones that need following up before formality of presenting useless papers.

Ndigbo on the ground sees all these as “medicine after death”, “roads that leads to nowhere” or “anwansi” – the more you look the less you see. They see nothing to confirm a change of heart form our political leaders through policies and programs aimed at improving their lives after all the talks and drama in Detroit. They believe more in Uwazurike - irrespective of what he may be - for believing in the course of Ndigbo to the extent of going to jail than cut deals from the powers that be.

And believe this or not; that is why everything will come to a stand still whenever MASSOB calls for a sit-at-home in solidarity for the Igbo course. Whether the compliance is out of fear or love is subject to debate, but the aim is always achieved.

What I will never advocate for is the reconciliation of the aggrieved parties because of the perceived importance of Ohaneze to the Igbo race. Let them “kill” themselves at the top there for all I care. They are all chameleons attempting to change to pilgrims without journeying. They have forgotten that leadership is about human activity that comes from the heart and touches the heart of others. How many hearts has Ohaneze touched?

I will however advocate for an all encompassing mass group that will target the middle class, the market men and women, the farmers, the civil society groups, students with the aim of increasing the level of political consciousness and addressing how to get the right people into elected office. A group that will engender trust and confidence in Ndigbo. A group that will awaken ‘charity begins at home’ before Aso Rock to the extent of scrutinizing the actions and inactions of political office holders in Igbo land and bringing out the best in them.

We have to see the current crisis in Ohanaze and the dwindling interest in what happens at WIC not only as victory but as a celebration of freedom for Ndigbo. Freeform to Ezi-onye-Igbo – symbolizing an end to the prolonged slavery and misrepresentation in the hands of Ohaneze as well as a beginning, signifying renewal to the course of Igbo race and a change from what has been to what it should be.

Until this freedom ‘metamorphoses’ into a new ideology, new dimension, and a new journey into a wondrous Igbo land whose boundaries are that of limitless imagination, opportunities and possibilities for Ndigbo, they will always remain standing – even though divided - as long as we remain indifferent.

What the Igbo need is a voice. One voice. One voice to speak with clarity of purpose and only then can they forge ahead.

The competition among them should be channeled into a vision for political agenda. Over the years, there have been to much noice yet no movement. The time for change has come. The Igbos should rise above their differences and become a force to be reckoned with.

Igbo , or should I say "Ohanezes" perennial political squabbles will always signpost Igbo political leadership untill mainstream Igbo politics is extricated from the sardistic influence of Abuja. That is the fact. The solution is not to get frustrated, low or to endlessly bemoan this irritating reality. Luckily , Igbos culturally seem not to be disposed to suffering fools(stupid political leaders) gladly. All you need to do to note this point is to look at Igbo villages and how they have managed to still elect their leaders through their Town Unions(through colonialsm, civil war and the abracadabra politics of the victors and the vanquished) to run the affairs of their communites without being dictatorial . Even , in those rare instances where some unfortuanate villages ended up with money bags as traditional rulers , it is obvious that the reign of these misfits most times lies in their "benevolence" to their communities in such areas as biulding schools, roads or hospitals and not a naked hyjack of traditional power to dorminate.Where this has taken place , the indigenes have always risen to oppose this or crush the usurper unless stoped by the federal police.

I dont see why this practice should not be the case with Ohaneze. It is obvious that Iwuanyanwu has always been comfortable with playing the role of a spoiler in Igbo politics. His desperation to be in the thick of Igbo political leadership is laughable as one can not point to any serious Iwuanyanwu deed for the Igbo! Defined aptly, Iwuanyanwu is nothing but an educated version of Andy Mabignton Chris Uba. All you need to do to comprehend the real Iwuanyanwu is to study his role in Imo State politics. In his devastating combination with his devilish soulmate Arthur Nzeribe, this duo and other Abuja created money bags suceeded in stiffling the already entrenched progressive politics of Dee Mbakwe in Igbo heartland. The likes of Izuogu were chased into political oblivion with all their positive ideas , and in their place, riffraffs and political urchins like Udenwa were proped up to supervise the unmitigated looting that took place in an unfortunate Imo state within the last 8 years. It is instructive to note that in his first 100 days in office Ohakim, the current Imo state governor seem to have endeared himself more to the people than a parasitic Udenwa could do in 8 years. And his progressive nature lies in the circumstances that instigated his emergence when Iwuanyanwus PDP was crushed for a more people oriented party as they embarked on yet another diabolical/illfated plan to foist a crook on the people of Imo state during the last general elections.

In essence , Okonkwos position of "siddon look" sounds too culturally irresponsible for an Igbo of his pedigree. As a writer we expect you to highlight this salient points as you educate Igbos and non Igbos alike with the interest of understanding the reasons for the deplorable back -stabbing politics going on in Ohanaze. This is even more important these days that this Abuja fabricated robot named Iwuanyanwu is struggling to become the South East candidate for the post of PDP chairman! The role Abuja played in ceaseleslly awarding contracts to his Hardel and Enic contruction company(he hardly finishes any project awarded to any of his company in the south east) just to flood his house with cash so he can quietly wrech more havoc should be highlighted, his penchant to hyjack Igbo leadership through Ohaneze so that he will easily parrot Abujas views should also be in the public domain.More importantly , the fact that this leadership struggle between the two camps is more of a fight between those ridiculing Igbo interests(as represented by Iwuanyanwu) and those determined to wrestle Igbo leadership from Abuja should also be noted and not a pedestrian attempt to lump all in one group!

Igbo political leadership has not always been like this. During the NCNC days that preceeded 1967, Igbo business moguls such as Ojukwu never invaded politics. Their role were clearly defined. While the erudite Zik and the hardworking Okpalas navigated the stormy waters of Nigerias politics, the money bags funded the parties and provided the resources to develop common interests. Current trivails of Igbo politics lies in the emergence of the Iwuanyanwus, Nzeribes, Ubas, Ezes and even Kalus as Igbo political leaders. While most of these characters owe their emergence to "foreign powers" outside Igbo land , it also important to understand that the crises in Ohaneze over their continued relevance reflects a pervading notion in Igbo land ; and that is the willingness to hasten the expiration of their relevance.Something that can happen tomorrow if there is no federal police!

Lest I forget... To which faction does Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu (Ikemba) belong?

Answer that question and you would have given direction to Ndigbo on where to congregate on September 29.

Make it a three way fight for consensual leadership of Ndigbo. Lets have Ifeanyi Enenchukwu, Dozie Ikedife and Uwazurike stand for a popular election. May the winner lead Ndigbo.

Dear Edoji,

We carry out wet operation on all those mischievious elements working against unity simple.:biggrin:
Many of them have outlived their usefulness and you and I know that. Other groups in Nigeria did it before they got unity amongst themselves.
