Children of Today and Nigeria of Tomorrow PDF Print E-mail
By Chukwudi Okeke

The young shall grow

Today’s children, are Tomorrow’s leaders

Pupils’ today, are teachers’ tomorrow

To be young today, is to be old tomorrow

For every Father, duties abound

Duty to rear, duty to raise,

Duty to teach, duty to train,

Duty to bequeath, duty to bestow

To their children, all to their children

From the south, up to the north

The west, across to the east

Weeping and wailing

Mourning and moaning

Sobbing and sorrowing

Children of today, complaining, of their tomorrow

Nigeria has become, a father failed.

A project botched, a dream forgone

A tunnel end, with no light.

Children of today, complaining

Of Nigeria, of tomorrow

Years wasted

Resources squandered

Priorities misplaced

Heritage lost

Alas, ready they seem

Lessons they’ve learnt

Hope they see

Determined they are

To correct

Errors of the past

To break

Chains of poverty

To revamp

All that is dead

To restore,

The dignity lost

To reclaim

Legacy sold

Poem by OKEKE, Chukwudi Anthony as Nigeria marks her 47th Independence anniversary.

I hope the lessons we have learnt will be put into use with enforced determination to “make it happen”.

Not this prevailing hanky-panky
Not this uneasy quietness
We have to stop this widening fracture.
