The menace of Nigerian armed robbers. PDF Print E-mail

No, I am not writing, or talking about petty thieves, pocket pickers, yams or cassava thieves. I mean thieves armed with machine guns, semi-automatic weapons, bazookas, and rifles. They are well organized, operate with military precisions, strike as lighting, and as deadly and destructive as volcanoes. These are the men and women of underworld.

I pray and hope that none of my loved ones, friends, acquaintances, or even my enemies, ever fails a victim to the men of underworld. These armed robbers are brutal, heartless, vicious, and are scumbags of the worst order. An encounter with any of them, if you are lucky to survive the ordeal, you will remain a dead man walking.

It is because of the activities of the Nigerian armed robbers that many Nigerians living abroad, are scared to death to come to visit, or come back to live in Nigeria. Some have even made unannounced visits, so as not to alert potential armed robbers. When they finally arrive in their own country, and homes, they are afraid to walk the streets, sleep in their homes, drive their cars, and visit their parents in the villages because they become unnecessary targets to the men of the underworld. I know, for sure, many who have encountered these armed robbers have horror stories to tell.

A family friend from America visited his hometown, in Anambra State, with his wife and their three children, on December of 2003, to celebrate the Christmas. These armed bandits visited them in their home. Fortunately, my friend, out of fear for the lives and security of his family, solicited for police protection for the duration of his stay in his hometown. When the armed robbers struck about 7.00 pm at the bedtime on the D-day, they were surprised that there were some police men, well armed, to engage them for more than four hours of gun battle.

During the operation, unfortunately for the armed robbers, the police killed their leader, who was a medical doctor. The police out gunned them, and they ran away, abandoning the remains of their leader. The bandits came back reloaded for another onslaught that night in an attempt to retrieve the body of their leader.

Meanwhile, the children, who were just about to go to sleep, were aroused by the battle of the machine guns. They kept on asking their parents what was going on, while they were busy docking and dodging the bullets that riddled the walls and the windows of the house they called home.

Luckily, my friend, his wife, and their three children survived the ordeal of the night, what a night! They were able to escape alive, with the help of the police, they walked to a place of safety, abandoning all their belongings for their dear lives. They were back in the United State of America without celebrating the Christmas in their hometown as was previously planned. Thank God, my friend and his family are alive today because of the intervention of the Nigerian Police Force.

My friend and his family, especially the children, are still having a nightmare about their horrible encounter with the men of underworld. They have never visited Nigeria since the incident, and they are not planning to visit in a near future. What a shameful thing.

Open our daily newspapers; they are always reporting the activities of these armed robbers. If they are not operating on Lagos - Abeokuta road, it is on Onitsha - Enugu road, or Umuahia - Port-Harcourt road, or Enugu - Abakiliki road, or Abuja - Lagos road, etc.

The activities of these men and women of the underworld do not stop on the highways alone. They extend their activities to homes, banks, businesses, and market squares. You name it. No wonder after building houses, and installing doors and windows in most of our cities, you have to fortify them with extra burglary iron proofs. Sometimes two or three layers of burglary proofs are installed before you can get to your bedroom. People are prisoners in their homes, simply, because of the activities of the men and women of the underworld. This will surely tell you how bad or worse security has gotten in some of our cities.

Such newspaper headlines, as “Armed robbers in Military uniforms kill two in bank raid” as reported by the Lagos Vanguard on Tuesday, September 9, 2003, are very common on our daily Nigerian newspapers.

In the above episode, the newspaper reporter, stated as follows, “Barely a week after five armed robbers were killed in Ondo state after hijacking and robbing a billion van belonging to a bank, another gang of 12 armed robbery suspects have raided the Akure branch of a bank, and carted away unspecified amount of money. They also killed two people.” It was also reported that the armed robbers killed three police officers during the shoot out.

The stories about a notorious armed robber named Anini, are still vivid on our memories. This bastard terrorized the whole country for many years. He bit the celestial dust after the Nigerian Police Force finally cornered him.

The activities of these men and women of underworld have no boundaries. It is the same story of stripping their victims of their hard-earned money and possessions, rape, kill, and leaving their victims scared for life.

There is a common expression that the enemies of my enemies are my friends. The Nigerian Police Force has earned bad reputation because of the bad eggs, and there are a lot of them, among NPF. But if it is true that “In 2005, police officials told Human Right Watch that from January 2000 to March 2004 police personnel killed 7,198 ‘armed robbers’ in ’combat.’ Remarkably, during the first three months of 2004, the police claimed to have killed 422 armed robbers in shootouts, while recovering only 300 firearms.” If after thorough investigations, and it is established that these people killed were truly armed robbers, I do not have any problem with such a report. How many Nigerians have lost their lives and possessions to these scumbags in the same period? How about the police and their families who lost their lives in the line of duty fighting these bastards? Are these not fair questions to ask? Please give me a break.

During some of these operations, the NPF have lost some of their men. Would you then advise the police to try to apprehend these armed robbers while the police are being shot by these men, just to grant them due process and justice? That will be unconscionable.

The men and women of the underworld do not grant their victims due process and justice. Or, do they? They are the scumbags of our society. Most of them would like you to believe that they were forced into armed robbery because of unemployment. The leader of the armed bandits that attacked my friend and his family was a medical doctor like my friend.

My only disappointment with the NPF is that the sweep has not been extended to our past and present corrupt leaders and politicians like Ibrahim Babangida, James Iboris, Patricia Etteh, Orji Kalu, Andy Uba, David Mark, Obasanjo, Atiku Abubakar, and the rest of them, who, instead of carrying machine guns, have used their offices and positions to loot millions of our wealth to enrich themselves and their sycophants.

I do not see how anybody, or organization, can come to the defense of these ruthless criminals in the name of justice. As fire drives out fire, so be it. More kudos to Okiro and his boys, if they are bent on rooting out the activities of these men and women of underworld in Nigeria. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck. If you are not an armed robber, do not behave like one, period.

GOD SAVE NIGERIA FOR WE ARE ALREADY BLESSED.

well the problem is that the establishment of the true sequence of events, if ever at all truly discovered, would be after the people would already be dead. and ofcourse, u cant bring them back to life when they are already dead and u find out that they werent armed robbers after all

How many Nigerians have lost their lives and possessions to these scumbags in the same period? How about the police and their families who lost their lives in the line of duty fighting these *******s? Are these not fair questions to ask?

yes, i agree that these are fair questions to ask. and frankly, i dont lose much sleep when i hear that armed robbers have been killed.
but i am always cautious to believe the side of the police against that of a civilian.
Fact is.... i have heard of quite a number of publicly disputed deaths of so-called armed robbers. and more significantly, i have had a personal experience where a group of young people were arrested by some evil policemen (of which am sorry to say, there are quite a significant number in the force), and becos these hapless youths were not willing or able to "settle" the police, the former were soon accused of being armed robbers and at some point, two of them were killed by the same trigger-happy police.
let us face it, the police in nigeria are not the type that i would vouch for, when it comes to telling the truth or being transparent about cases of mistaken deaths. they will fight to death to ensure that their folly is covered up.
this is not really an unusual occurence, am sorry to say. becos our policemen are not well-trained and their ranks HAVE been infilterated by many unsavory elements. I WOULD SAY THAT 50% OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD PERSONAL DEALINGS WITH THE POLICE, DONT USUALLY HAVE A PLEASURABLE STORY TO TELL AFTERWARD. .

The men and women of the underworld do not grant their victims due process and justice. Or, do they? They are the scumbags of our society. Most of them would like you to believe that they were forced into armed robbery because of unemployment. The leader of the armed bandits that attacked my friend and his family was a medical doctor like my friend.

I AGREE OH!!!!!!!!!! it is true. i have been a personal victim of armed robbers and as u said earlier, it is by the grace of God that i didnt end up being a "dead living".
how i wish, ARMED ROBBER could be written clearly on the face of all those who practice the trade. in which case, i would GLADLY have them all killed with some poisonous substance that would ensure a slow and painful death. cos frankly, shotting is even too good for them.

My only disappointment with the NPF is that the sweep has not been extended to our past and present corrupt leaders and politicians like Ibrahim Babangida, James Iboris, Patricia Etteh, Orji Kalu, Andy Uba, David Mark, Obasanjo, Atiku Abubakar, and the rest of them, who, instead of carrying machine guns, have used their offices and positions to loot millions of our wealth to enrich themselves and their sycophants.
again, i am in full agreement oh!!!!!!!!!!! these ones u mention here are actually worse than armed robbers if it were possible to be that.
and for this group, i would prescribe a similar, if not more gruesome death than what i prescribed for the armed robbers. actually these should be left for atleast 10 years in jail without trial and thereafter, infected with the death poison that would kill them slowly for another 10 years.

If you are not an armed robber, do not behave like one, period.
my brother, i dont think anyone is coming to d defence of the ruthless criminals. on the contrary, those of us who are agreeing to the call for caution are trying to defend your rights and mine, from being encroached upon by these same judge and jury policemen, who would without conscience throw us in jail and kill us at d nearest opporuntiy when they didnt get what they bargained for.
unless u have never had an encounter with the police to see their 10-faced lies, u would not realise what folly it would be to trust anyone's fate to them.

In 2002, I attended an international conference in Stockholm. During a short recess, a number of people walked up to me and the main question they asked me about Nigeria was like this…..Why do people in Nigeria live in houses built like maximum prisons?
5 years later, I have not replied to that question. I just waived it and talked about something else. So, now they will read the answer here.

Chukwudi, I am sure you were not surprised when I gave armed robbers prominence in the introductory part of my book. In my opinion, the greatest inspiration for them is the flow of Nigerian politics.

What is the difference between a man who steals using a gun and the one who steals using a pen?

They are both harmed, one with gun and the other with a pen.

The one that has a gun kills directly and the one that has a pen kills indirectly.

The one that has a gun, surprising kills less than the one that has a pen!

Nigerian politicians are responsible for more deaths in Nigeria. People who die because of mismanagement and bad governance in one day are probably more than people that are killed by armed robbers annually. Who should we tackle first?

But my mum always say this: what is bad is bad. Therefore armed robbers are bad people and corrupt politicians are bad people. They belong to the same league-killers!

Chukwudi,

Thank you. Good job.

I think most of us still miss what the issues are, as regards Okey's article and Police PRO rejoinder.

I doubt if there is any Nigerian in his right mind who will doubt Police brutality and the need to address it. But what Okey's article seems to be querying is the right of the Policemen to fight back when shot at.

That article was not about Police brutality in focus, but about Police statistics of killing 785 men of the underworld. Okey went to town criticising that figure without first establishing or proving that those were killed extra judicially.

Why should anybody be surprised that the Police could have actually killed about 785 armed robbers in gunfire exchange in a country where armed robbery is daily event and the robbers move in convoy?

We are not daft enough not to realize that there is Police brutality in Nigeria, but questioning their right, insinuating that most of their killings are extrajudicial, when we have proof that many of them were also killed in the process or querying their right to fight back when their life is in danger would be grossly unfair.

Breaking News : Robbers, Robbers Everywhere, Police Helpless

By Simon Ateba & Wole Adeboye

The spate of robbery operations in the Lagos metropolis is alarming and seems to be sending wrong signals that police are helpless in combating the menace. No single day or week passes without report about robbers laying siege to entire streets in the metropolis or mugging at gunpoint and killing innocent citizens as well the policemen themselves.

Armed robbers seem to be having a field day as they strike at night as well as in broad daylight, carting away huge sums of money and properties worth several millions of naira and leaving their victims with indelible scars and trauma.

Last night, they raided some supermarkets in Magodo. They also attacked motorists under the Ojodu Berger bridge at 8:00 p.m.

In another incident, a car belonging to the Africa Independent Television, AIT, was snatched.

Last Sunday, a police constable identified as Isiaka attached to the Sabo police station was shot by robbers during an operation. He later died in the hospital on Wednesday.

Armed robbers again struck at Giwa Oke Aro Street, Iju on the outskirts of Lagos and killed three persons including a four-year old girl.

The robbers, numbering about 50 reportedly came to the street in four buses, three cars and one jeep. They perforated the walls of many houses. They reportedly ransacked all the houses in the street and took away money and other valuable goods.

Tears flowed freely on the street yesterday as one of the victims of the robbery incident a 16-year old, girl was buried.

About three weeks ago, at least 20 armed robbers, most of them teenagers, raided Adedotun Dina Crescent, Off Ajose Street in Mende, Maryland.

Sources told P.M.News that the robbers moved from house to house. In one of the apartments, they collected N6 million cash from a man who had just got the money as rent for his building.

The man, it was learnt, was planning to take the money to the bank on Monday when the robbers struck on Friday night and took the money from him.

Luckily for the residents of the street, no one was hurt during the robbery operation that lasted more than an hour.

In the morning of Thursday, 22 November, daredevil armed robbers struck at an old generation bank on Iju-Ishaga road, killing a 15-year old pupil of Holy Blessed College, Abule-Egba, a police constable attached to the bank and three others. Several onlookers and passers-by were also seriously injured.

In another daring daylight operation early in the week, robbers gunned down four policemen attached to Mushin Police Station, Olosan, and snatched the salary of members of staff of a company located at Fatai Atere Way, Matori, Isolo, Lagos.

The slain policemen were said to be escorting a van carrying the salary of members of staff from FCMB to the company on Monday when they were attacked.

At Oshodi, also early this week, a medical student of Ahmadu Bello University, ABU Zaria, was killed by unidentified gunmen.

The victim, identified as Sunday Adaji, 26, was found in a pool of his blood at Ewenla garage in Oshodi area of Lagos.

When detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, (SCID), Panti Yaba, visited the scene of the crime, they found a travel bag containing two locally made pistols, ammunition, his identity card and some medical books beside the corpse.

On Tuesday 20 November, gunmen invaded the residence of Justice Olanrewaju Akeredolu.

The unidentified gunmen had stormed the house and vandalised the property shortly after she ruled that the local government election in Ondo State cannot hold at the moment.

On 14 November, blood flowed at Trinity bus stop, Apapa, Lagos, when daredevil armed robbers engaged the police in a shoot-out. At the end of the shooting, two policemen, an inspector, a sergeant and two of the suspected robbers lay dead.

On Wednesday, October 30, armed robbers shot and killed a guest at a naming ceremony near Haruna bus stop, along College road in Ifako, Agege.

The incident occurred at about 9.30 p.m. when about four armed men dispossessed a man of his Mercedes Benz ML jeep.

P.M.News learnt that one of the guests at the ceremony had thrown stones at the robbers, obviously in sympathy with the victim of the robbery operation.

The robbers, who were driving of in the vehicle, were said to have become angry and fired several shots at the guests at the naming ceremony and in the process, three persons were hit and sustained injuries.

One of those shot by the robbers, Kayode Amos, 26, a painter, died later in the hospital.

On Wednesday, this week the Inspector General of police, Mr. Mike Okiro, allegedly escaped from a robbery scene along Apapa-Oshodi expressway.

The attack occurred a few hours after the police boss had told journalists in Lagos that there was no cause for alarm regarding the spate of robberies in Lagos and other parts of the country.

Okiro was reportedly heading towards Festac Town in the course of his one day working visit to Lagos when the bandits struck at Berliet bus stop along Oshodi/Apapa expressway.

It was reported that the Inspector General of police and his entourage had to abandon the Festac visit and move to Idimu in Alimosho.

This week alone, robbers have struck on Acme Road, College Road, Ijaiye Road all in Ogba area of Lagos while other parts of the city are also under the robbers’ siege.

The robberies have been attributed in part to the alleged collaboration between some bad eggs in the police force and some of the robbers. This was the allegation of a former Inspector General of Police.

Also, a robbery suspect who was arrested recently, corroborated this allegation by saying policemen connive with robbers.

The suspect confessed to the policemen at Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at Adeniji-Adele that police officers often connived with them to rob.

The suspect, Sunday a.k.a Eje-oto, 26, of no fixed address is the leader of a 10 man-gang who rob in Lagos, Ogun and Ibadan with sophisticated weapons.

He had been arrested and detained several times but later released.

Some of his accomplices, known as Settle, Chicken, Yellow, he said, were set ablaze by a mob when they were caught at the scene of a robbery.

In his confessional statement to the police, Eje-oto disclosed:

“I can’t be killed by bullets because it won’t penetrate. I just won’t stop robbery because it runs in my blood. I blame the whole thing on my mother. She never saw anything wrong in whatever I did because she is fully in support of me, whenever I go out to rob and come back with my loot.

“Policemen often gave us information on where to go and when the policemen are on our trail. They also share in our loot. I am not bothered about this arrest because I know too well that I will soon be let of the hook.

“I was arrested by the police based on the information given to the police by some informants.

Robbers kill four-year-old girl, two others
By Kunle Adeyemi
Published: Friday, 30 Nov 2007
Armed robbers, in the early hours of Thursday, invaded Giwa Oke-Aro Street, Iju, on the outskirts of Lagos and killed three persons, including a four-year-old girl.

Mr. Olubode Ojajuni, Police Public Relation Officer

The robbers, numbering over 50, were said to have gone to the street in four buses, three cars and one jeep.

Our correspondent learnt that tears rolled freely later in the day when a 16-year-old girl killed during the raid was buried.

The robbers, who perforated the walls of many buildings on the street with bullets, allegedly raided nearly all the houses on the fairly long street.

One of the victims, who preferred anonymity, told our correspondent in shock that her family lost a huge amount of money and valuables to the bandits.

She said, ”I came back home yesterday (Wednesday) at 9pm. When the okada man dropped me, I saw some men drinking and having fun very close to our house.

”I did not take them serious. I just walked in and soon went to bed because I was very tired.

”Suddenly we were just woken up by five armed men who demanded for money. They kept on asking where we kept the money and threatening to kill my husband.

”We immediately gave them the money my husband just collected from somebody. Not quite a minute after they left, another group entered our flat and demanded for their share of the money.

”It was after the incident that we realised that the robbers entered our flat through the window. They broke doors in other flats.”

It was learnt that at one of the houses, the robbers who divided themselves into groups, killed the four-year-old girl of one of their victims.

The father himself was reportedly shot while his pregnant wife wept profusely as she appealed to the robbers to stop their havoc in her home.

After the robbers left the woman‘s apartment, she was said to have called her mother-in-law and informed her of the condition of her husband, who was almost bleeding to death.

The mother-in-law, it was gathered, sent a driver to the house to assist in taking the man to a hospital, but the robbers intercepted the driver when he entered the street.

They allegedly killed him, dumped his corpse in the booth of one of their vehicles and drove away with it.

The 16-year-old girl that was killed was said to be a granddaughter of the community head (baale) in the area.

In the morning of the day of robbery, residents reportedly found and picked expended shells all round the neighbourhood.

While the robbery lasted, it was alleged that no security personnel came to the rescue of the residents, some of who claimed they alerted the police when the robbery started.

When contacted on the telephone on Thursday, the spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Olubode Ojajuni, said he was not aware of the incident.

He said the divisional police officer in charge of the area was on annual leave.

The sight of suspected robbers paraded daily on the pages of our newspapers is quite different from the picture being painted by the writer here. I have never seen any of them paraded with any type of sophisticated weapon: no machine guns, not even AK47, just locally made pistols and some fake toy guns. Maybe the sophisticated arms have been recycled to the yet to be caught customers to continue their nefarious activities..

If Nigeria policemen are killed, they must have met their untimely death when they are caught unawares by the robbers and not during shoot outs. Experience has shown that they are rarely available when the real shooting action is going on.

Sophisticated weapons are found with militants, not robbers.

MikkyJaga, I beg to disagree with you on this one!

Those who have been victims and eye witnesses to sophisticated robberies can tell it better.

Do you know that robbers go on raids in gangs of 40-50 or more. That they go with plants to generate power so that they can cut down chains and barriers.

Let me tell you what I know, Nigerian robbers carry such sophisticated weapons that can even be used under water. I wrote an article somewhere and I asked if there are treasuries to be carted away from Lagos lagoon.

Believe it or not, Sophisticated weapons have been with robbers for a long loooong time!

Armed Robbers, the mere thought of them gives me the hibby jeebies. So that when they show ven without brandishing a weapon, I die.

But, question - with the number of banks and the various e-means of payment that exist now, why do Nigerians still carr inordinate amounts of cash? One thing is for sure, armed robbers come to steal and they prefer cash (I presume, because it is not traceable) so why do we make their business lucrative for them? I am not blaming the people just asking that we use noncash methoods of payment. The ATMs will dispense only so much cash even if they take us at gun point to the machines!

In Lagos particularly, the streets have gates and access after certain times to your own house is almost impossible seeing as one must run the gauntlet of Odua guards who demand payment and simpering gatemen who coerce you for tips. Again how come these guards and gate men are not killed by armed robbers when they come? there is no point asking how come robbers have such easy access when legitimate residents do not?

Just wondering

My brother, I quite agree with you, but the problem is, the police have never displayed any of those sophisticated weapons recovered from robbers.

I said, maybe they normally recycle those ones to their customers, yet to be caught. The guns they normally display are not the type you described above.

As to why nigerians carry cash around, i 've no idea, but i know people who have had horrible ordeal with armed robbers in their home who now keep lots of cash at home in case they got visited again by the these men of the underworld because there are some of them who would not kill or rape if you have enough money to give.
