Where is Nigeria Heading? Pictures that touches the heart.

During Obasanjo’s eight years of misrule and waste, eight years of total and evil neglect of the country he swore to serve, Obasanjo bequeathed on Nigerian’s useless projects like the failed Rural Telephony contract in cahoots with his Chinese friends at a cost of nearly One Billion US Dollars ($1,000,000,000.00), which is about One Hundred and Thirty Billion Naira. The Obasanjo government that privatised Nitel and M-tel due to the inability of his government to run them only to go and establish a government owned mini Nitel with borrowed funds from the Chinese government and executed by Chinese companies. Obasanjo further bequeathed to Nigerians projects like the failed Weather and Communication satellite programs with combined costs of over One and Half Billion US Dollars. We have the presidential jet purchased with Eighty Million US Dollars coupled with the billions of naira guzzled on the failed third term project. Yet everyday Nigerians, ordinary Nigerians were (and are) dying, struggling and suffering from everyday, ordinary and basic problems that a conscience led government should and ought to provide. But in Nigeria, government is not about conscience, it is not about service nor is about leadership. Government in Nigeria is all about greed, greed and more greed that bothers on evil. Such evil that made Patricia Ette, the erstwhile (unelected) speaker to siphon over five million US dollars for the renovation of her official residence. The rumour mills are equally fingering David Mark, the (unelected) senate president in circa Three and Half Million US Dollars renovation quagmire, with David Mark anything is possible, with David Mark, greed has no limit, hence I am bound to agree with the rumour mills position. That topic is for another day.

Millions of US dollars are being embezzled left, right and centre with ease by the people who are supposed to look after the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians. Yet the country is collapsing, rotting, decaying left, right and centre with ease, without the so called leaders realising the situation on the ground. The country is slowly grinding to a halt, there is lawlessness everywhere, there is acute hunger and poverty in the land, there is hopelessness and desolateness country-wide, yet the (unelected) leaders are choosing not to notice, choosing not to realise and above all chosen not to act.

Year 2007 is coming to an end and my question is: Where is Nigeria Heading? As can be seen by these pictures (Courtesy of The News newspaper, Nigeria)

Image 1 (Graphic)

Image 2 (Graphic)

These are pictures of an accident involving a petrol tanker sometime last week on the Lagos – Abeokuta express road, the road that leads to Obasanjo’s state and town. Report had it that the tanker driver in trying to avoid the numerous pot-holes that litter the road lost control and crashed. The rest as they say is history. The pot-holes that were neglected by Obasanjo’s government in effect caused the accident.

Reports had it that two days after this heart-breaking accident that the accident site remained as seen in these pictures. The corpses left to decompose. No emergency or allied services to remove the corpse, infact no body’s business, no governmental responsibility. Lagos – Abeokuta express road is a federal government owned road, so where were the federal government ‘funded’ organs that should take care of situations like this?

Where were the police? Where were the road safety corps? What is the role of the civil defence corps? The custodian of that road, the federal ministry of works and transport, where were they? In a nutshell, what does President Yar’Adua think his job is? Where is he? For such an incident to be occurring in his country.

For this to be happening in Nigeria of our time, the Nigeria with the 2020 vision of a great nation, the Nigeria that is talking about nuclear energy and space technology is indeed sad and hopeless to say the least.

Like the caption of this article; Where is Nigeria Heading? Readers are invited to tell me. For the faint-hearted, please do not look for these pictures are really a touch on the heart.

What!!! These are very horrid sights. When will those in power in Nigeria cease from loving the smell of roast human flesh?.

Me personally thinks all this Westernisation, Privatisation leading to environmental exploitation and human degradation is not paying off for Nigeria o. They keep taking our 'precious natural resources' and use the same 'precious natural resources' to gradually wipe us off. I am not even sure there are enough environmental justice activists in Naija, the ones that pose to be are only bother about what the 'Niger-Deltans' should be entitled to.

The Campaign ought to be 'SEND AWAY THE OIL MAGNATES'

@ Ajala Trafu,

The 'Oil Magnates', as you refer to them, have NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the inability of the Nigerian State to provide security and safety for the citizens of this country. The 'Oil magnates' necessarily come here STRICTLY to extract oil from our territory. It is the RESPONSIBILITY of the 'government' (if it can be so called) to provide facilities and infrastructure.

The government has the option of approaching the 'oil magnates' for some forms of collaboration and cooperation but NO foreigner is OBLIGED to do or give ANYTHING to Nigeria and Nigerians.

We do NOT need anybody's 'charity'. We need dedicated leaders, not the 'rulers' we have had to endure in the past.

That said, those pictures indeed captured a very tragic occurrence and as I am wont to say, So what? What now? With all the air crashes that occurred in the last few years, what MEASURABLE improvement has been undertaken in our aviation facilities and equipment? I ask because I don't know. Perhaps something has been done; if it has been publicized, I just haven't come across it.

Port Harcourt airport is STILL closed how many years later? Who is in charge? What is s/he doing?

Diezani, (Transport Minister) what are you doing to ensure that flights are safe for you and yours?

If there are 'powers' thwarting your efforts, when will you publicize that fact for all to see?

If there is no challenge, when will we see MEASURABLE results?

These are the questions that occur to me to ask, rather than pointing fingers at people who are doing what they came here to do.

Indeed what is Diezani doing? When are we going to see results? Whatever the challenges, she is there to provide some kind of solution.

Although I am a Diezani supporter, I doubt she realizes just how much is before her

Indeed Vimo, I am a Diezani 'supporter' meaning as long as she does the very best to communicate her progress and challenges, in the face of long standing and intractable problems, I can join others in supporting her efforts.

I know she is neither the author of the problems that she faces, nor possibly the complete and only solution and I hope I did not inadvertently give that impression.

I'd hope she'd divide the large problems she has met into 'biteable' chunks and do what she can in the time she is in a leadership position.

I wish her well.

We all agree Obansanjo was corrupt and got very rich when he was President of Nigeria. We must not lose sight of the fact that every leader Nigeria has had was corrupt and put their selfish interest before our country’s, every one of them.

Nothing has changed and nothing will change in Nigeria if the people accept what our leaders do to our Country and us. Looking back thirty years, dead humans and cattle were common sight in Nigerian towns and cities and still are. They sometimes remain where they fell for months. If the locals spot dead cattle before the carcass begins to decay, they cut it up and take it home to serve with their meal.
By the roadside you see car’s involved in serious accident, rather than move these cars they are left there, a hazard that leads to more fatal accidents.

Like I said, this has been the case for thirty years, it’s obvious our leaders have no consideration for our wellbeing so the answer to your question is, Nigeria is heading nowhere. Our Country has always been chaotic and dangerous, it will remain so, I cannot see a turnaround because our politicians are too busy stealing, making Nigeria a better Country is not something they even think about.

EezeeBee,

I think the priority is to get decent citizens who will then elect credible leaders from the decent pool of citizens.

Asking an indecent citizenenry who are unwilling to fight for their “rights to be governed” by decent leadership is itself indecent.

Maybe all political positions in Nigeria are for sale by the same citizens you want to elect credible leaders, what does that tell you about the citizens themselves?

Nigerian leaders are citizens for the people and by the people, we have elected by consensus corrupt leaders, and by our actions that is what we deserve unless we decide to stop the trend.

Speaking to white manager in shell recently; the man told me, yes we are exploiting your country, yes we are controlling your wealth and natural resources and yes we are bribing your leaders so they can be in collaboration with us…. But what are the Nigerians doing about it? By the very nature of humans why will anyone stop the status quo of gravy train when we choose to talk about it and not do anything?

Margaret Thatcher got complains from the black community about racism, simple answer from the iron lady: You are not doing enough to force society and government to address the trend!

One of my cousins in Nigeria with no job and no means of livelihood has had a 3rd child and immediately picked up the phone to me in London saying things are bad and that God will provide.

No kidding I said, for a guy with no means of survival you sure as hell did not help yourself very much.

Typical Nigerian nonsense of hoping and praying things will change and that God will provide good leaders one day even thou we celebrate the corrupt ones and help them come back to power whenever they bloody well feel like it.

Chidi, those are sights that takes us decades back into the stone age, where cave men survived like it was a rat race. Having said that, I want us to know that the sanctity of life needs to be placed upper most in whatever dealings or activity government embarks on. Today, the life of an average Nigeria is worth a peanut, they are maimed and killed, while government security operatives watch on. So, how much value will be attached to those pitiful sights in the graphics, when it is a common sight on a regular basis. Days of OPC and other uncivilized militias using extra judicial measures to kill in cold blood, has affected the psyche of the people, to accept those kind of graphics, and of course, walk past them like its a norm.

The accident calls to mind, some of the earlier postulation for other viable means of transportation, that is, diversifying the transport system. The waterways and railways will take a lot of pressure off the road. It must be said, in civilized large countries like ours, the rail system is the best means of transporting petroleum products over long distances. This saves the road, and also secures other road users. The trucks can be used to transport petroleum products over short distances. In Apapa railway terminal, some of the old coaches used in transporting petroleum products, lie fallow, while the rails have been allowed to degenerate due to inadequate maintenance culture. It is most disheartening, when solutions lie side by side with these problems, and our leaders fail to see them, due to greed. It is no news, when I say that, the petroleum products haulage industry is controlled by politicians, meaning, it will take some level of sincerity, surpassing selfish interest to get round such gory sights.

You are right but the major problem is that when the so called decent people get hold of power, they become indecent and even more corrupt than their predecessors overnight. The very few that have the fear of God in them and who have somehow tasted what the ordinary citizens are going through are not allowed to near the hot seat. It is also a known fact that credible people do not win elections in Nigeria. Each and everyone of us somehow have a role to play in it all. When we start educating our parents, brothers and sisters at home how not to collect stipends to vote for people during election; or how to still collect it from them and not vote for them, dirty politicians will think twice before aiming at politics in Nigeria. If every Dick and Tom do their bit, before you know it, Nigeria's image politically will experience a turn-around for good.

Thank you Oghre. Until we Nigerians decide we've had enough . We will keep on dying . Hoping and praying to all kind of Gods will not help us. God helps those who help themselves. The government gets away with this because we let them, the government is a product of its citizens. . I am sick of Nigeria. I don't even no where to start anymore.
