Hosting of World Igbo Congress (WIC) in USA - What an Idiocy?

Every year a reckless organisation that styles itself connives with irresponsible politicians of Igbo extraction to hold a jamboree in far away USA they call; annual convention. This year, their so called annual convention will is slated to hold from August 28 to September 02 at the Hyatt Regency Two City Hotel in Tampa, Florida. Lined up as special guests are Governors Theodore Orji and Ikedi Ohakim of Abia and Imo states respectively amongst other undistinguished guests as reported by the Guardian newspaper online edition of August 25, 2008.

The WIC lauds itself as championing Igbo causes. What Igbo cause are they championing in far away USA? What Igbo cause are they championing by dealing with Igbo politicians with questionable mandates? What Igbo causes are they championing by undermining the rule of law in Igboland? For Governors Theodore Orji and Ikedi Ohakim still have cases pending at Election tribunals questioning their mandates. What Igbo causes….?. Anyway the so called WIC convention is just a scam, period. FBI and EFCC should be invited to scrutinise their books.

A true champion of Igbo cause should hold its convention in Igboland and not far away USA. It should disassociate itself from politicians with questionable mandates. It makes economic and political sense to hold conventions periodically at Awka, Enugu, Owerri, Aba, Abakiliki, Umuahia, Onitsha, Port Harcourt, Asaba, Agbor, Ukpor and other Igbo cities. Economic sense, in that it is cheaper for Igbo indigenes to travel to these Igbo towns than to fly out to the USA. Economic sense, in that large turn out of delegates will have a beneficial multiplier effect on local businesses in the town hosting the convention – think about the local hotels, local eateries, beer parlours, etc.

The political advantages of hosting such a convention in Igboland are enormous; the whole Igboland will be able to see for themselves the achievement of the Igbo governors first hand and not the propaganda they dish out daily in the media.

For Imo state, Igbo’s will see if Governor Ohakim’s Clean and Green Initiative is a reality or a ruse. They will see how clean and green or dirty and brown Owerri, Orlu, Okigwe and other Imo towns are. They will see the state of schools in Governor Ohakim’s Imo state (please visit Holy Ghost College, Owerri). They will see for themselves the state of hospitals, roads and other infrastructures in Ohakim’s Imo state. They will speak to the pensioners that Governor Ohakim has refused to pay their stipends whilst jetting off to Florida with their money and gauge their suffering. They will see for themselves whether Governor Ohakim is the real deal. These cannot be seen from far away Florida.

In Anambra state, Igbo’s will see for themselves whether Governor Obi’s Anambra Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS) is real or a scam like Governor Ohakim’s Clean and Green Initiative.

Igbo’s will see for themselves the state of schools in Governor Obi’s Anambra state. Igbo’s will be able to visit Governor Obi’s ANIDS funded hospitals and pass judgment on its success or failure based on first hand information and evidence on the ground. Igbo’s will be able to visit his stock exchange building and see if they can trade in stocks from there or whether the building is a white elephant. Igbo’s will see for themselves the sanitary situation in Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi. Igbo’s will see for themselves whether there are functional water supplies in the state. Igbo’s will see for themselves the real situation on the ground that cannot be seen from far away Florida.

For Abia state, Igbo’s will be able to ask Governor Theodore Orji first hand if he was taken to Okija shrine. Igbo’s will be able to summon the High priest of Okija shrine and ask him first hand if he knows Theodore Orji and under what condition. It has been reported in the papers that Abia state is owing civil servants several months salary, an Umuahia based convention will give Igbo’s the opportunity to ascertain the truth first hand from the civil servants. An Aba held convention will show Igbo’s first hand what Governor Orji has done, development-wise in Aba. These and all others cannot be ascertained from Florida.

A convention held in Enugu or Abakiliki will highlight the development or lack of it in Enugu and Ebonyi states first hand by Igbo’s. These cannot be highlighted from far away Florida.

For a convention held at Asaba, Igbo’s will be able to see for themselves first hand whether the cry of marginalization by our Delta state brothers and sisters are real and ask Delta state politicians of Igbo extraction where they stand. The same goes for a Port Harcourt based convention. Again these cannot be done from Florida.

From the above discourse, one can then see that hosting an Igbo convention locally, in Igboland, is where the true benefit lies and not some fraudulent jamboree somewhere in a hotel, in Florida attended by questionable politicians and characters and without their wives.

The hosting of the so called World Igbo Congress annual convention in the USA is simply idiotic to say the least. US Embassy in Abuja and Lagos please do not issue visas to these charlatans that want to go to this irresponsible junket. Charity they see begins at home. Let them fix their home front first.

this organisation to the best of my knowledge is made up of Igbos in the USA. May be they should change the name to make it clearer. I cant recall anything positive they've achieved, they should be an institution infuencing good leadership in Igbo land, I do not know how well they,ve done that

Chief,
For the first time i read an article of yours that does not cast venom on a persived enemy and one which is does not dispaly flagrant personal achievement.WIC in America is organized to celebrate IGBO CULTURE, to me it makes sense to hold one here in America because is one such occasion where people of Igbo extraction who recide USA can come together and relish on what makes them IGBO.

Just another Chidi's decoy way of attacking Peter Obi and Ohadikam of Abia State. Don't be misled by all the rattles why the convention's venue is not in any Igbo city..... Forget this disgruntled and damned element called Odenigbo.

Odenigbo,

Though you have a couple of good points in your piece, I find quite a number of your submissions belated, unfounded, sentimental and partisan.

I was forced to check up your name and exploits through the engines and I noticed your far reaching symphathy for the Uba's showcased through your various write ups. Ever since the World Igbo Congress disgraced Andy and Chris, these two charlatans and their respective goons of which I understand you are a strong member have never hidden their disdain for the WIC, hence I understand your grouse.

The truth remains a world congress must not be held locally,it sparks of functional illiteracy to conclude so, it might be beneficial for you to note that the idea behind the WIC was originally pushed by the Igbo's resident in the states as a sign of their love and commitment to the ideals and culture of their origin, hence they should have the prerogative of were it holds.
May I remind you that the pressure and noise made by the WIC during the oppressive days of Chris, Andy and their band of rogues was what actually created international awareness about these rascals and their inordinate ambition to pocket your state. This singular action brougth these brothers to their knees hence the need to dispatch Chris to the Congress to state his story.

Going through press statements and other rejoinders signed by the WIC in general, I have noticed a pattern of patriotism in their calls for justice, equality, fair play, security of lives and property, free and fair elections in the south east etc.

I don't see anything ulterior in this congress you have decided to label 'reckless' but what I see is you doing a yeo mans job for the Uba's since they thrive in violence, kidnap, murder and executive robbery which run negatively parralel to what the WIC preaches.

The call on FBI and EFCC to intervene is hypocritic as Andy Uba's mind boggling financial improprieties remain a primary source of concern for these bodies which should move quickly to bring him to book.

Regards and best wishes.

Back to you Odenigbo:

Ten Simple Questions for Chidi Anyaeche

Written by Rudolf Ogoo Okonkwo

Sunday, 20 April 2008

I will try to hold off my annoyance, even when it is legitimate.

Because I want Governor Peter Obi to be held accountable for what he does in Anambra State , I will try not to give the impression that I am interested in muffling legitimate attempts to critic his performance. Doing so will be falling into conscienceless net of people like Chidi Anyaeche.

I had wanted to do an Understanding Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe kind of piece on Chidi Anyaeche but that will be too easy. More so, it will amount to giving Chidi too much credit. Chidi Anyaeche isn’t such a complex being that needs to be understood, not that Ikenna was. Neither is he a new phenomenon on the prowl, as epitomized by Ikenna. Just like those before him, Chidi is a single celled amoeba, crawling around, changing shapes, and in perpetual search for a host body to leech on.

I have obviously passed the point where I look at the likes of Chidi Anyaeche and assume that the mind is a bag that we all carry differently. The problem here is that to the untrained eye, the well and the latrine can be misconstrued to be the same thing. But while one produces water, the other produces stench.

I want to try something novel here. We often assume that everyone looks in the mirror before they walk out of their homes. Even for those who do, we assume that the mirror in their room is not one of those crazy mirrors that give out twisted images. I want Chidi to have an opportunity to reflect. Who knows, he may come up with something profound. He may discover to his own surprise that he has truly found the enemy of Anambra State and the enemy is him.

As one of those who have spent considerable amount of time discussing the Anambra palaver, I am confident that for the first time in a long while the state is in good hands. That does not mean that we should switch off the critical eyes. What is troubling is to see disguised forks held by scorned hands masquerading as critical eyes without first disclosing the begging cap those hands once held.

More importantly, for a critical eye to be credible, it must operate with a context. It must not succumb to the lower angel of its past as embedded in previous undisclosed misadventures. As the clique goes, he who must come to equity must come with clean hands.

I will ask Chidi ten simple questions here. They will give him a chance to reflect. If he answers the questions truthfully, he will make some disclosures that will free him to pursue his newly found passion for criticizing Peter Obi. If he tells the truth, he may find himself confessing in some instances. He should not worry, no one will subject him to opipa, penance. He should not be blunt in his answers else he descends into isa asi sa, induced confession.

Here are my questions for Chidi:

Question 1: Do you know Governor Peter Obi personally? If yes, how do you know him and for how long?

Question 2: Did you and your family help elect Peter Obi governor? If so, what were the reasons why you supported him then?

Question 3: Did you try to approach Peter Obi after he became governor? Did he rebuff your approach? What were you seeking from the governor?

Question 4: Do you know Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe personally? If yes, how do you know him and for how long?

Question 5: Have you had any reason in the past to believe that Ikenna is a lair? Do you know an example of where he manufactured stories and was caught lying about them?

Question 6: Have you ever spoken to Okey Ndibe on the phone?

Question 7: Have you ever spoken to Omoleye Sowore?

Question 8: Who sponsored your recent “fact finding” trip to Anambra state? Did you meet with Ikenna during that trip?

Question 9: How long has Anambra State been in ruins? How long has Peter Obi been governor? How long do you think it will take a governor with the kind of budget Anambra state has to touch every facet of the ruins left by the likes of Mbadinuju and Ngige?

Question 10: How do you sleep at night?

The venerable Martin Luther King Jr. said, “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporally defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”

Is Chidi’s truth armed? Is his love conditional? We won’t know until he answers these questions. Not just for himself but for us all for he knows, just like we do, that ora bu iyi. But if he doesn’t, then we know that the fowl that flees from the ground must have farted.

Nothing illuminates sin like hypocrisy. Nothing.
