Between Agnostic and Disgusting: Ranting of Faithless Men

As a product of the blues generation of the early 1980's, when the fashionable heroes of the time are passionate soul musicians, I was always mystified and challenged when it comes to issues of the heart, especially as it was my period of youth and impressionable existence, that is encapsulated within the duration of my primary school days, which introduced me to social relationship with other people outside the confines of my family circle and the most fascinating of such interaction with other species of the human race, was the cohabitation within the proximity of a classroom with the female folks, what I find intriguing in that close atmosphere of living from the psychological perspective, was the presumed adverse relationship between the girls and the boys, as the two sum have not developed to a stage of comprehending the natural wily attraction imbued in them, thus you could easily hear a male primary school pupil professing hatred to a fellow female classmate. Perhaps, because at that time the natural flow of reactions are simply pure, devoid of influences that societal acquired pretences usually create. Thus whenever a kid at that stage of life proclaim dislike for a girl, a little passage of time usually create a reverse reaction, following that well tested adage about a thin line between love and hate, which is a similitude with a self proclaimed agnostic expressing disgust with a fellow believer in the sacred vow of religion.

After reading the submission in the early of last week by Tunde Fagbele, titled: Public Nuisance Masquerading As Religion. About his sons bother with night vigil activities of the Christian kind, followed by the added burden of an Islamic call to the prayer by Muizzin, my first reaction was the thought of contacting Mr. Femi Falana, that irrepressible human rights activist that does not tolerate a situation where a fundamental human right is in peril, as there is a likely hood of that child is only curious about a faith that was able to keep Ibadan people up all night, which is that fierce subconscious urge that is naturally present in every human beings, about the need and necessity of a higher power in the affairs of men and women of conscience. However, what could have caused a timid believer to seek joining issues with men that profess distaste for the almighty. Actually, it was the calm demeanor of the writer with a beard that could make a rabid fundamentalist like Osama bin Laden to go green with envy, in fact such mien could easily earn one a comradeship of the infamous Al-Qaeda religious zealots, yet the facial appearance of the disbeliever reminded me of a long lost father, that could easily qualify as a cleric though was able to comprehend the need for his children to find their own ways in belief, after all unlike Tunde Fagbele, I have never spotted a beard in my life, which could have been a monumental deviance, except for the fact that a understanding father always allows a child to seek his ways, devoid of indoctrination and programming about the irrelevance and impotency of God.

The reason for seeking to disturb the peace of lawyer Femi Falana, by involving him in activist litigation activity was because of an emerging scenario in Nigeria, where those from the agnostic community have terrorized every one into submission, on their undertaken battle with the adherents of the two monolithic faiths, their argument being that Islam and Christianity are two foreign religions that should have no space in the land, with an argument that they only constitute an interpolation on an African continent that is rich in heritage and beliefs, which is easily equated with the introduction of modernity to the continent through the deceptive act of conquest. The grand irony though, is that the only people sharing this obstinate aversion to things modern, new or different, are actually the fundamentalist zealots that constitute the core of groups like Boko Haram, thus, when the Nigerian version of a terrorist say he abhors modernity, an agnostic condemns later introduced monolithic faiths, in the context the more older traditional religions that have been in existence, since man set his eyes on the sun and got sucked by the glow of the big burning satellite, thereby conferring enormous powers to it, yet they have always condemned them as a bunch of intolerant lot, who makes the width of their space a little bit smaller by the bigoted activities.

Yet, what could have caused the involvement of a human rights activist on the personal matters of faith between a father and son. After all, the subset of individualism has always been the mantra of the people devoid of faith, but the definition of personal matters of faith should not be consigned to the walls of the family homestead, rather it should go to the extent of one's ability to make choices regarding matters of faith, thus enabling the son of a cleric to thinking freely about general matters of existence, though not subscribing to that fallacious reasoning about the concept of free thinking, indeed the eventual and inevitable triumph of capitalism has shown that nothing can be free in this world, even the intangible act of thinking has a price in the constituting of primal motive in criminal offences. Thus, it is necessary for all people of goodwill to tolerate the kind of inconvenience consorting with God entails, perhaps, even that child with a bother would find the beauty of African communalism that night vigil activities endanger and sustain, in the social-psychology of a continent acclaimed as the best in the world in communal sustainability.
