Hi All,
Compliments of the season. I am sure 2007 is heavily pregnant and I pray it brings forth a new dawn for all Nigerians, home and abroad.
So the Nigerian population is officially 140,000,419. Why does the figure end with 419? How miraculous that the figure surprisingly ends with 419? It only means that even the Nigerian Government does not believe in the census figures. They know that the figures have been doctored abi how you see am Mazi Uche N? Bro. Wale make you speak out o. Sis Jumi and Soul Sizzling, Auspy, you dey there? Oga Lawyer J.D. abi wetin you think? Akuluouno, I hear you wel wel for another thread.
It should not be a great surprise however that the number of men is actually more than that of women. It will be recalled that the 1991 exercise put Nigeria's population at 88, 992, 220 made up of 44, 529, 608 males and 44, 462, 612 females. That is to say the population of men has always been greater than that of women in Nigeria but how come men can still marry as many as 4 or 5 wives, have many concubines, yet we hear there are still many women looking for husbands. Where did we get the phrase ‘Senior Girls’ from? Those our sisters who are in their late 30s and 40s and unmarried. Why do we not have an equivalent of senior girls – that is senior boys in Nigeria? The senior boys we know in Nigeria are not necessarily unmarried at 40 or 50. Rather they are those with plenty of naira to throw around, those who drive big cars and live in big houses. If it is true that men have always been more than women, I need someone to explain this trend to me and other confused Nigerians.
In many Nigerian families where a relationship is not blessed with a male child, we all know the anxiety that follows the birth of every successive female child. In short most Nigerian marriages are incomplete without a male child and some families will go to any length to have a male child. The desire to have a male child is one of the reasons some men often give for marrying a second wife. In fact, many Nigerian men are known to have male children outside their matrimonial homes because their official marriages are not blessed with a male child. No be for my mouth you go hear of Nigerian State Governors wen born bobos outside Governor’s house because first lady na mama born girl. In one particular instance that I am aware of, a woman’s name was changed from Bonita to Abigail after she had the 4th girl.
Please pardon me if you think I am asking too many questions but if the search is on and constant for the elusive male child, how come the Nigerian Government tell us that men are more than women? Where are the men if our senior girls continue to remain single abi na by choice? Which kind ojoro be dat? Does the Government expect us as women to jubilate?
This is not the only surprise; preliminary reports say Kano is likely to be ahead of Lagos in terms of the number of people in both States. The Nigerian government will never cease to amaze me. How can anybody think that there are more people in any Northern State than in Lagos abi as Fela bin ask; na the donkeys and carmels wen dey for Kano them count? Abi na the groundnuts? What about my friends and family in Lagos and Port Harcourt that they did not count? These are people living in urban areas with proper okada, danfo, and even molue accessibility. Even keke Marwa dey reach where dem dey stay. Chinedu, Gwobe (long time), Don Abraxas, Techsista, Papino, abeg una dey hear wetin dem dey talk for that our country? Cdimkpa, you hear them? Nonyellum na true you talk. We dey wait for State by State analysis? Which year Nigerian Government go stop all these 419? Fela talk am before e die after the 1991 census. Dem still dey do the ojoro. Dem no go stop.
Another question Nigerians should be asking is what about the brothers and sisters and their families in diaspora? We no be Nigerians again because we dey live for abroad? Or did they include us in the figure of 140 million? Will we ever know the true population of our country when those of us living abroad have no voting rights? What about the undocumented Nigerians in diaspora? My questions plenty no be small.
My estimate is that Nigerians are in the region of 200 million including the number of Nigerians in diaspora. I have also heard that among every 5 Africans abroad, one is a Nigerian. That gap might have closed a bit more. What will it cost the Nigerian Government to direct our embassies to carry out a census of Nigerians in diaspora whether you are legit or not? The choice should be yours as a Nigerian whether you want to take part or not but at least the opportunity should be given. Here in Ireland, a Nigerian passport for the purpose of regularizing your stay with the Irish Authorities cost €400 per person. It will not cost too much to inform passport applicants that their details can be used for the purpose of Nigerian census but our country has no interests in its people at home or abroad. What a shame.
These are some of the reasons why some of us think democracy is not a sport whereby some people are active and others are spectators. Move from your comfort zone and get involved, that is the message from this 419 census.
