Hang Gliding And Shola, the Flying Gorimakpa - Part I PDF Print E-mail
By Bankole Arowobusoye

Is it a bird? is it a plane? is it a bullet? No it is our clean shaven head flying Nigerian!

Wherever they may be found, most people would probably agree that Nigerians are an energetic, highly driven breed of enterprising people. Within this breed is a certain unique young man who goes by the name ; Shola Ogunmokun.

And what, you may ask makes this young man unique?

Well, Shola, an intensely focused fellow (with a shinny clean shaven head) is bent on flying across the U.K in a powered hand glider. As shown in the video clip accompaning this article, this fellow already is deeply engrossed in training for this enterprise and has launched a website to publicize this plan.

I must confess that when I first heard about this development, I immediately recalled a line in the movie “Deep Blue Sea”, wherein LL Cool Jay who played the role of a bartender jokingly admonished the risk taking, mountain climbing dare-devil millionaire Samuel Jackson with the apt words

“Don’t brothers already have enough ways of getting killed ?”

My first instinct was to smack this young man on his gorimakpa head and hysterically yell the above words into his ears , because I know  that any type of flying, especially hang gliding, could reasonably be called an extreme sport. Afterall, all that is between you, the elements and a spectacular crash down to mother earth from an ungodly height is a pair of flimsy polyethylene wings, a few strings, a leather seat and a glorified lawnmower delusionally called an engine,

Then, I jokingly thought of conducting a poll amongst my friends in order to figure out what Shola’s motive was.I imagined a poll as follows:

What is Shola trying to do?

a) Kill himself
b)Spectacularly kill himself
c).Totally kill himself
.
d)Totally and spectacularly kill himself

However, being something of a flyer myself, I reasoned that it might be a tad hypocritical and hasty of me to come to this macabre conclusion, so I decided to further investigate this matter.

Now, having paid close attention to this young man’s blogspace, http://mbchallenge.blogspot.com/ (Shola's Blog) ,intensely studied his face and imaginarily running my hand over his bald head in an effort to read his mind, I can now put everyone’s mind at ease. I am convinced that the intense focus on the young man’s face is as a result of his acute intelligence as well as unusual commitment and definitely not as a result of madness. Further more, it is safe to assume that the undulating bumps on our protagonists clean shaven head is an indication of the high degree of cerebral activity threatening to bursting out of his skull and not as a result of any bumps to the head suffered during abortive take-offs.

My investigations also revealed that a clean shaven head, though not essential to landing and taking off in a glider is however by virture of its ability to better reflect the sun’s rays and other electromagnetic pulses, advantageous in better of showing up on tracking rader systems.

Hence we can safely wind up by saying that  killing himself in a spectacular fashion is not Shola’s intention, rather, it is to demonstrate the irrepressiveness, of the human spirit especially that of the Nigerian variety. It takes a peculiar kind of courage to go from not having touched a glider in one’s life to trying to set gliding records within a year. Lest anyone think it is just a sport, I will point out that the practical applications and the potential for commercial spin off could be enormous if an entrepreneurial spirit could be harnessed to complement this adventure, as Shola has already expressed the willingness to explore the possibility of commercializing this “sport” at some time in the future in Nigeria.

Now having had the chance to reflect more deeply upon Shola's undertaing, if I were to run a poll today, the following would be how it would go;

What is Shola trying to do:

a)Prove to himself and to the world the capacity of our people for achievement
b)Inspiring millions of Nigerians and Africans all over the world
c) Courageously facing challenges and breaking new grounds
d) Possibly setting the stage for a successful commercial enterprise in future

Shola by his action is proving to be an inspiration to more Nigerians and Africans all over the world than he could possibly imagine. This act sends the message that we can do whatever it is that we set our minds upon. It affirms that we as a people are not deficient in richness of human spirit.

Shola, we are proud of you and are keenly following this development.

The problem with some of us is , like FELA would say "we dont want to die" "Mama dey for house, papa dey for house".

Compare with one Oyinbo granpa I met back in '92 accompanying his grandson who was joining the airforce at 18. I asked the granson what would be is specialization in the Airforce. He told me explosion specialist......someone who will be defusing mines and "cheat" like that. I turned to the grandpa, why would you let him go for such dangerous occupation? He told me......"if that is what he wants to do? God bless him"...."someone gotta to do it." I respect Oyinbo fearlessness!

Which was why when I wanted to join the Army, I did not inform anyone in my family...knowing I would be discourage. And now, It was the best decision of my life....and I had the most fun of my life while I was in.

Please encourage anyone who dare to risk is life for whatever freedom. Without such people....no cars, airplanes and other invention we now take for granted.

I hope that shola has a life policy and his family is aware of where it is. He should also write his Will so that his poor wife and children will not be side-lined when his Gorimakpa land on a rock.

Congratulations to those encouraging him on the hang gliding mission. He should also call on Guiness Nigeria Ltd for them to promote him as the new 'Micheal Powers'

Basoko, need not interpret what he wrote-- he was speaking in tongues!

Na wa for this Bakoso :D
Hang gliding, if done properly, I'm sure is no more dangerous than most other sports.

I for one will Congratulate and encourage Shola. I hope more people will see things in a more positive perspective.

@ithinkbetter:
No one is saying you have to go to London to do this. if you can manufacture a glider that would be great, in fact we need people like you especially in Nigeria. How about thinking of hooking up with Shola?

Shola, Ride on o jare, please don't listen to any negative comments. You are an inspiration and a lot of us are following this development.

Ride on O jare wa pe fun wa !! ( carry on you shall live long) I love this guy for his sheer audacity to stomp his feet on this world like a truelly concious citizen of the Universe. He has aready broken the rules of racists, bigots and colo_ mentals, that want to box us up in some racial constraint saying that certain sports or human endeavour are only for certain a "race", to all the nay sayers, I say we dont need your weak livers, to discourage us

instead of u to encourage a person that has catually been bold enough to carry out his vision, you laugh, guess what it wont be too far fetched to say that is an indicator of your own lackof vision ,still in the duldrums. What I mean is that its not easy to be a pioneer of sorts, so at least just watch in silence if you cant contribute positively.

Ire O !!!
