10 reasons why I am not enthused with Amodu Shaibu

By Ayo Akinfe

Like most other Nigerian football enthusiasts, I was waiting impatiently for the day Berti Vogts would be sacked after the shoddy performance of the Super Eagles in Ghana 08. I am glad that we have eventually got rid of one the most incompetent and lazy managers in our history but in appointing Shaibu Amodu as his replacement, have we really made progress?

They say not all movement is going forward and not all change is progress. I believe that in this case, we have made the classic mistake of assuming that nothing can be worse than the status quo and assumed that the grass has got to be greener on the other side of the fence.

I for one wanted to see Vogts go immediately after the lacklustre draw with Mali and would have been relieved if he had taken a leaf out of Henri Kasperczak’s book and quit when it was clear he no good. However, he did not and it took our hapless Nigerian Football Association (NFA) several weeks to fire him and then another eight weeks to find a replacement.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who has been following the sport passionately that our NFA went for the cowardly option of appointing a local coach. After the woeful tenure of Herr Vogts, the NFA did not have the bottle to go for another foreign coach, despite the fact that this was what was needed.

In a classic case of throwing the baby away with the bathwater, our spineless NFA has gone for the easy and populist option in appointing a man who will most likely be a worse coach than Berti. It is at times like this that you are looking for your leaders to rise above the fray, defy the baying mob and do what is best, not necessarily what is most popular.

After being literaly mugged by Berti Vogts and his sidekick Emeka Ezeala, it is no surprise that Nigerian public opinion is firmly against the idea of a foreign coach for the Eagles. However, should the NFA board not be brave enough to resist the temptation of drifting with the tide and succumbing to the lure of populism?

Like most other Nigerians, I would like to see more indigines involved in the running of most of our national affairs but where we lack the sufficient expertise, we must hold our hands up and admit it. Can we for instance afford to send all the foreign oil companies packing simply because we want to be in control of our crude oil industries ourselves?

It has been widely reported that Amodu made grovelling overtures to the NFA board and Amos Adamu in his quest for this job. He pledged to be a “good boy,” assured them that he is now a changed character and all indicators point to the fact that he will tow the party line.

Does anyone in Nigeria really think that Amodu will have the bottle to drop big name players and replace them with unknown youngsters if that is what is required? Can anyone for instance see Amodu dropping Nwankwo Kanu and picking Chrisantus MaCauley in his place if he is forced to make a choice between the two?

I can go on all day about how we have jumped from the frying pan into the fire and how it is almost certain that the third coming of Amodu will be an unmitigated disaster. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, we do not learn from our mistakes and we will only start lamenting after the damage is done after we are unceremoniously beaten in 2010.

I put it to those who appointed Amodu, that he has the following shortcomings:

[1] Amodu Shaibu will not command the required respect from the players

[2] Amodu Shaibu does not have the international clout to arrange friendlies at the drop of a hat

[3] Amodu Shaibu does not have the personality or stature to convince players with dual citizenship to play for Nigeria

[4] Amodu Shaibu will not be able to enforce the kind of discipline Herr Vogts did

[5] Amodu Shaibu will not be able to declare the Eagles hotel a no-visit zone

[6] Amodu Shaibu is simply not a big enough personality to tell the NFA to back off his team and his plans

[7] Amodu Shaibu will not be able to make it clear that he will not tolerate political interferance

[8] Amodu Shaibu will not be able to prevent NFA bigwhigs, agents and politicians interfering in his squad and team selections

[9] Amodu Shaibu will not be able to pick training camps and tell the NFA that whether they like it or not, his choice is the final one

[10] Amodu Shaibu will not be able to fix camp deadlines and then enforce them rigidly by sending latecomers back to their clubs

Anyone who believes that with all these problems the Super Eagles will be of any revelance on the African football scene in the near future is simply deluded. At the moment, there is nothing to our team. We are simply living off past glory.

What we need now is a clearout of the old guard and the overwhelming number of average players in the team. I cannot think of a better time to introduce the world class talent in Yemi Tella’s World Cup-winning U17 team into the senior team than now.

How many Nigerians believe that Amodu Shaibu will have the bottle to do that? In 1974, Father Tiko weeded out the old guard from the 1973 All African Games gold-winning squad and replaced them with youngsters like Chukwu, Odegbami, Atuegbu, Usiyen, Lawal, Amesiemeka, Odiye, Ojebode, Iwelumo and Ekeji. Otto Gloria carried out a similar cull in 1980, as did Clemence Westerhoff in 1994.

Every time Nigeria has won silverware, we have been led by a brave coach who is prepared to defy conventional wisdom and introduce radical and wide-ranging changes. Coaching the Eagles is not a job for a yes-man if we are interested in winning any silverware.

Anyone who thinks Amodu will arrange friendlies, tour the European clubs our boys play for, retire the old guard, introduce unpopular but winning formations or introduce a strict disciplinary code is living in Cloud Cuckoo Land. I believe we are set for more agony, as our failure to bite the bullet and appoint a world class manager will cost us dear.

Poor Mother Africa will weep in 2010 when the so-called giant is not there to provide her with the necessary leadership when she hosts the World Cup for the first time. Once more, Nigeria has let the African continent down.

You must be a @Q@#%% for comparing Nwankwo Kanu and Chrisantus MaCauley. So If you are a coach you will drop Pappilo for Chirsantus? the problem of nigeria football starts with foolish people like you who know nothing about football but open their filthy mouths to talk nonsense...

<1> Amodu Shaibu will not command the required respect from the players

AND WHO TOLD YOU THAT?

<2> Amodu Shaibu does not have the international clout to arrange friendlies at the drop of a hat

COUNTRIES PLAYING NIGERIA IN FRIENDLY WILL THEY BE PLAYING AGAINST AMODU OR NIGERIA? THE NAME NIGERIA IS THE BRAND AND NOT THE NAME AMODU.

<3> Amodu Shaibu does not have the personality or stature to convince players with dual citizenship to play for Nigeria

WE HAVE MILLIONS OF UNTAPPED TALENTS HERE IN NIGERIA SO THE DUAL CITIZENSHIP PLAYERS CAN PLAY ANYWHERE THEY LIKE. AMODU SHOULD DISCOVER THOSE RAW TALENTS FOR US.

<4> Amodu Shaibu will not be able to enforce the kind of discipline Herr Vogts did

WHICH DISCIPLINE DID VOGTS ENFORCE IN THE TEAM WHEN THE PLAYERS HAD THIER GIRLFRIENDS IN GHANA?

<5> Amodu Shaibu will not be able to declare the Eagles hotel a no-visit zone

EVEN IF ONE MILLION PEOPLE VISIT THEIR HOTEL WHAT WE WANT IS RESULTS. SO LONG AS HE DELIVERS ALL OTHER THINGS DONT COUNT.

<6> Amodu Shaibu is simply not a big enough personality to tell the NFA to back off his team and his plans.

DID YOU DO THAT FOR HIM WHEN HE WAS FORMERLY THE COACH? WHEN HE QUALIFIED US FOR WORLD CUP?

<7> Amodu Shaibu will not be able to make it clear that he will not tolerate political interferance

ARE YOU IN HIS MIND? ARE YOU AMODU SHAIBU?

<8> Amodu Shaibu will not be able to prevent NFA bigwhigs, agents and politicians interfering in his squad and team selections,

WHICH COACH IN THE WORLD HAS THE CLOUT TO PREVENT AGENTS FROM BRINGING IN PLAYERS IN HIS TEAM? PLEASE NAME THAT COACH?

<9> Amodu Shaibu will not be able to pick training camps and tell the NFA that whether they like it or not, his choice is the final one

IS SELECTING GOOD TRAINING CAMPS WHAT NIGERIANS NEED FROM AMODU? WHAT WE NEED IS RESULTS IF THEY LIKE LET THEM TRAIN IN ADAMASIMGBA OR ONIKAN WATER FRONT

<10> Amodu Shaibu will not be able to fix camp deadlines and then enforce them rigidly by sending latecomers back to their clubs.

WHETHER FIXING CAMP-DEADLINES OR NOT AMODU KNOWS WHAT NIGERIANS ARE EXPECTING FROM HIM, QUATER-FINALS IN SA 2010! AND HE KNOWS HE WILL BE CRUCIFIED FOR ANY FAILURE SO HE AS A COACH WILL KNOW WHAT TO PUT IN PLACE TO MAKE HIS TEAM BE WINNING MATCHES... WHAT WE ARE SUPPOSED TO DO IS TO ENCOURAGE HIM AND NOT TALK NONSENSE ABOUT HIM WHEN HE HAS NOT EVEN SETTLED DOWN FOR WORK. THIS GUY IS STILL THE ONLY INDIGINOUS COACH TO HAVE QUALIFIED NIGERIA FOR A WORLD-CUP. HE KNEW HOW HE DID IT THEN SO HE WILL DO IT AGAIN.

i know if it is Onigbinde you wont write this fuqing shiiit! BunKum.

Alorainiddevil,

Its high time Nwankwo Kanu quit football or at least the national team. For a player at 31 and after having a heart surgery years ago, the right thing to do is to play less football. I for one dont see why he'd continue to be a member of the super eagles. It is a big shame and smacks of greed that he is still playing today especially against the back-drop of his health. Let him not copy our corrupt leaders who never give up even in the face of abject public rejection.

Did I hear you insinuate that it is greed to play football at 31? At what age did the Camerounian legend, Roger Milla quit football? I shake my head sadly. You are one of those promoting mediocrity for whatever reason.

I pity this your warped logic sha. Why doesn't a previously sick (and apparently recovered) professor quit his teaching profession?

thw writer of this piece has dwelt more on perception of Amodu Shuaibu, One think curiosly missing in his check list is if Shuaibu has the technical competence, i agree does other factors are important, but i think the depth of his technical ability is the most important. I'm sure David Beckcham is allowed to play for a while in some matches because of his past achievements, left for some england managers they wouldnt bother fielding him, I totally agree clout and assertiveness will help a manager but why did ths writer choose to ignore exploring Amodu's technical capabilities, if he has one?

Warped logic indeed! Nwankwo Kanu must be the only living footballer in the world who has had a heart surgery still playing football at 31. This is something you refuse to factor in you post. You dont see that Kanu runs out of steam 20 minutes into every match. A footballer like Jay Jay can play up to 50 cos he has the stamina. Except Kanu is playing to settle his mortgage problems, I dont see what he hopes to achieve on the pitch. You must have other ideas to think that a footballer who runs for 90 or more minutes and a professor who could choose to sit down during lectures are expending the same energy. This sounds more warped.

My problem lies in Nigerian's attitude to criticize "anything Nigerian"!
Where was this writer when Vogts was appointed?
Why did we not see a TEN POINT agenda on why Vogts cannot succeed?
Why did the writer not remind us back then that Vogts does not have the personality, presence of mind and technical depth to carry us beyond first round, for the first time, in a long time?
Why cant this writer criticize the "thinking" that makes us pay Vogts, $5Million per month while paying Amodu =N=2Million ($17,390 approx) per month?
Why is it that when the foreign coaches FAIL-US, thats when we remember our own indeginous coaches? if in doubt, read it here!

Is this the often repeated COLO-MENTALITY?

From Otto Gloria, Father Tiko, Clemence Westerhof, Bonfere Jo, Bora Milutinovic, we've had so many foreign coaches but we have never reached the Semi-Final of the World Cup, yet its taken us over a thirty-year span!

The same reason this writer is adducing now (local coaches dont have the experience and expertise to build us a good team) is the same reason that was given and had always been given, in the last 35years! So, if we know the problem, does it take 35years to map-out a strategy to imbibe this "expertise and experience" into our local coach?

When are we going to learn that there is no short-cut to success: You learn, make mistakes, improve on those mistakes and get better.

The Nations interest is better served, if we all join hands to assist Amodu to make HIS mistakes, which actually is OUR mistake: We lacked forward planning.

Had we sent Amodu on developmental courses, training camps and apprenticeship with Clubs like MAn U., Arsenal or Hiax, since he last qualified us for a world Cup, TODAY, we will be talking one of the most experienced and technically adept coaches!

But its always "he's no good, no clout, no experience, no respect, no command, no muscle, no mustache, not a foreigner, not from Brazil, not a Yoruba man and all other sorts of "Pull-him-down" syndrome.

We'v tried and failed with so many "white and no so white men", WHY are we afraid of trying and possibly failing (50-50) with one of our own?

As for Kanu Nwankwo, he has given his best to this country, he is advancing in age but if the coach thinks there is a younger chap who can "displace him" from the team, so be it. Thats what training Camps are all about. Its not our job on internet forums, to start selecting players when the Camp is not yet even opened.
The best teams are a mixture of Youth and experience.

Go Amodu! Go Amodu!! Go!!!
10Kobo Sports :D

You are right brother, football is the only unifying factor. I just got mad at the guy, the stupid writer just spoilt my saturday morning. I cant imagine that any right thinking Nigerian will criticize the appointment of Amodu the only indiginous Coach to Qualify us for a world cup. Meanwhile, i dont even know where Amodu hails from but for sure he is not an Igbo man but i give him 101% support as a radical football fan that wants our football to grow. Up Super eagles!! Go Amodu Go!!

Overdryv,

It is not wise to ask kanu to Quit at this point or have you not been following Pompey's gloriuos season? Kanu is still strong and kicking and he plays up to 80minutes in each match he starts for Portsmort. the guy is still good 2010 will be teh ideal time for him to quit and not now. if you place the 24players in Vogts team on a scale and decide people to strike out, i belive about 15players will leave the team before kanu.

have a nice weekend
Up Chelsea
