| The days of man on earth can be summarised into a simple statement of fact: a fleeting living of intrigues, pseudo-bliss and pain. From the cradle to the grave, man remains obsessed with the thought of harmonising and navigating these odd variables into a measure of bliss, at least to compensate for his sojourn here on earth. How then do we measure his level of success: material acquisition; academic prowess; physical elegance; spiritual maturity and regeneration or astral attainment? The ugly but rare truth is that he almost always fails, considering the fact that regrets abound at his demise. He might have been an academic guru, but material paucity stared him at all times in the face; nations may have fallen at the mere mention of his name, but he whimpered and shivered in the company of a mistress; his physical elegance must have been whispered at corners to re-echo on tree tops, but spiritually, he was dead to sin and shameful immorality. There in the personal tragedy of man: pursuing lofty goals and as a consequence, remaining eternally bugged down by not attaining all. What then is the essence of existence? Why do we subject ourselves to so much stress when all will be lost sooner or later? Is it a mark of our heritage to labour in vain? To perpetually remain the slave of brutish forces of history bent on keeping us in bondage? Will the young man ever grow to acquire wealth, or the rich old man be healthy enough to ‘enjoy’ his acquired wealth? The interesting aspect of the question of ‘the egg and the fowl, which came first’ conundrum, is that humanly the answer is unknown. There in lies our most promising hope. Celestial wisdom is too profound and extensive to be grasped by our feeble minds no matter how much we crave for it. We can only quietly live, a spark of consciousness in a wide expanse of nature. Let Caesar possess his possessions; that which is God’s can never be stolen. When next you see the sun rise to its majestic brilliance, give thanks to the Almighty, for that is one of the fewest things of His stupendous creation that through His infinite and unfathomable mercy, He dispenses to you the good man, and your neighbour, the bad man. Think about it!!! |
