Members of Enugwu-Ukwu Community of UK and Ireland, an Igbo socio-cultural organisation celebrated their 2005 children’s christmas party on Saturday November 26th 2005 in London. They treated themselves, friends and well wishers to various sumptuous native meals, ranging from Ofe Onubu (Bitter leaf soup), Ofe Oha and other delicacies. Santa Claus also presented gifts to Enugwu-Ukwu children at the party.

Commenting later, Leo Nkwonta (Obidigbo) commended the executives of the association for the idea, ‘we need such interactions especially in the UK, so that our children will get to know each other, and also learn aspects of our culture’ he said.

Martin Oyekwe, the vice president of the association used the opportunity to call on Enugwu-Ukwu indigenes living in the UK and Ireland to identify with the lofty goals of the association, ‘we call on our Enugwu-Ukwu brothers and sisters to come and register with the association because the association provides a good forum for social interactions, while also helping our people back home, through our sponsored self-help projects’.

Nonyelu Udenze, the president of the association pleaded with all Enugwu-Ukwu indigenes all over the world and their friends and well wishers, to come to the aid of the association by donating towards the refurbishing of the Enugwu-Ukwu Boys Secondary School, a project currently being sponsored by the association, according to him ‘We have to help and support one another’.

He directed all those interested in supporting the secondary school project to visit the association’s website (www.enugwu-ukwucommunity.org) for further information.

Chief Chidi Oli (Amandi ana eze), an elder of the community praised the rich cultural heritage of Enugwu-Ukwu, he also reminded Enugwu-Ukwu indigenes of the charge from the traditional ruler, Igwe Osita Agwuna (Eze Enugwu-Ukwu & Igwe of Umunri), who used the occasion of his annual Ofala festival in 2001 to plead with Enugwu-Ukwu indigenes who have means and resources to also extend their good fortune to others, onye enyelu, nya nye, the Igwe had advised.

Speaking on the future plans in the association’s social calendar for the coming year, Willy Okekearo, the social secretary of the association said that preparations have already begun towards staging onwa asato (new yam festival) in London in 2006. According to him, ‘we are hoping to use such traditional events to rekindle the interests of Enugwu-Ukwu indigenes in the diaspora about their rich cultural heritage’.
