Is Niger Delta Oil War Not Serious Enough? PDF Print E-mail
By Akpu Nku

Nigerians accuses the bolshy Niger Delta of greed, mismanagement and large scale corruption by their leaders as a result attributing their woeful situation as their own making. What else is new there you would ask, but other regional leaders and their jingoistic ethnic groups are impudently canonizing their dead and living leaders while demanding accounts of the Niger Delta leaders as if they are delinquent rascals. If that is the case, then as it is in my park of the woods, what is good for the goose is also good for the gander. Nigeria factors calls to obey. Chikena.

Yaradua, who through the Nigerian factor became the president, went out on a limb in cahoots with his Northern kinsmen, to seek ways of alleviating the regions desparation in the national food crisis because it is more of a concern to him as a Northerner than as the president of Nigeria. As a result billions of dollars of rice, wheat, maize and other staple grains will be flooded all over the North while the illusive Southern Nigeria just have to make do with a song and a prayer.

The old guards of the Northern political elements are busy exorcising the spirit of their dead and beatifying their posthumous names, the Nigerian press are all on a bandwagon of inquisitive tittle-tattle about individual probes and tedious derivative theatrics of skew-whiff tragi-comic Nigeria. The Niger Delta becomes a non issue therefore never discussed and pursued with vigour by the press because they have a complex which is not flattering against the Niger Delta intent, in the end, it's quite clear to see that few journalists, columnists and political commentators would wade into the turbulent waters even with measured trepidation.

The other day, Afenifere speaking for the non existent Southern Nigeria or correctly for the Yoruba, suddenly found their high frequency voice they apparently lost 9 years ago to rail against their Northern partners about their perceived lost equal-partnership position and to protest against the "Northernisation of Nigeria" by an ungrateful Yaradua who their kinsman with warts and all went out on stolen limbs to impose on hapless Nigerians through a do-or-die political abracadabra.

While this is going on, Ohaneze who had been snoring in sprawled abandon eventually stired in their sleep and made some incoherent mumblings which people who were wide awake dismissed with a lame wave of their hands, particularly when the sound coming from their mouth were the same old drone.

Now, ACF, as the joker in the pack, whipped up a masculine tone threating the Delta Militants with "serious" consequencies if they abandon dialogue for violence and commanding Yaradua - who I suppose they know very well- in the same manner to "seriously deal" with the situation either by dialogue or force as they are threatening the unity of their one Nigeria based on the Oil which they won in war of attrition, Araba and one Nigeria, all rolled into one.

In all these cacophony of autistic tantrums emanating from the prominent regions, all demanding their perceived birthright in the Nigeria political equation, all blinded by their ethnocentric supremacy, all failed to give a second thought to the issue of the Niger Delta which is firmly anchored in the belief that the Oil and the region and it's people are the spoils of war to compensate the Hausa/Fulani/Yoruba victors, therefore it is imperatitve that it's brazenly imposed as a right of unapologetic legitimate ownership, while the "nyamiri" inhabitants are viewed as the irritating nuisance they can baley tolerate like a fly on their scrotum.

While Yaradua unashamedly rallies his kinsmen to seek solution to the food crisis in the North as opposed to a Nigeria solution and to indulge in what Afenifere would call "Northernization of the Nigerian government", the Niger Delta is laughed off as rather inconsequental to cause any noticable ripples to the unity of One hegemonic Nigeria. In the same vain, the Southwest who craftily shouts for a non existent Southern Nigeria only as a ralling cry to get back the position they inadvertently lost call for Southern Nigeria solidarity while accussing Yaradua of hudding all the ministerial posts for his kinsmen. Ndiigbo at this point are out of it till only God knows when because Obasanjo effectively severed them from the mainstream Nigeria as he dangled in his puppet which surprisingly came alife and progressively danced without strings.

But the fact of the matter is that Nigeria is at war whether they want to admit it or not because they are wrongly equating the numerical strength of the militants to their preconceived assumption of the population of the Ijaw. But what about the Itshekiri, Urhobo and the Delta Igbo who share the same region? Perhaps the Southeast, Southwest and the rest of the South-Sotuh states will certainly sit up and notice when the war rages into their regional states to become a contested battlefield between the unforgiving Nigeria Army and the Delta Militants who are ever emboldened by the day.

If the regions of Southern Nigeria still think the Niger Delta is a picnic or a flash in the pan, they must as a matter of urgency think again because the Niger Delta as an exploded battlefield is located in their regional backyards. The North is almost a thousand miles away therefore does not give a toss one way or the other whether the whole of Southern Nigeria becomes the next Afghanistan.

This is the revolution we have been deliberately hoping to wish away while we tightly shut our nippy eyes to the realities of the malevolent bogey. I don't know the strength of the militants and I don't care if they are 20 or 200,000 men. All I care for is for Nigeria for once in their wickedly hypocritical existence do something constructive to calm tempers of all dissenting voices in Nigeria for the good of every region.

Military intervention is not the best option as it's the norm in Nigeria and also the North to assume the position of judge and jury will inflame rather than dampen the militant MEND and NDVF and calls for regional self determination. This is not the era of Isaac Adaka Boro nor is it the Biafran war. It is not the "Wetie" of the Western region nor the Tiv uprising. This is Niger Delta and Nigeria in the 21st-century and the dynamics of war and rules of engagement have logistically and scientifically changed. Battles are not won by numbers anymore but partial to guerrilla warfare than full frontal attacking battle.

Let all Southern regions forget all their ethnic jigoisms and wants for once and be concerned about the Niger Delta Oil War before it consumes the whole regions. Agadi nwayi si ya agaghi agba oso ya agaghi eje ije ma mgbe ewu kpuru akoto-anwuru ya o ga agba oso je ije, so say Ndiigbo. Let us make haste while there's still light and it would be quite a jolting shock to the rusty One Nigeriana as their delusion of a monolithic invincibility will be revealed as a false show of braggadoccio so steeped in the victories pasts to bother to reinvent itself with time to suit the 21st-cenutry conflict management. It will not just do in todays world.

The MEND and NDVF should extend their friendly hands "across the Niger". They should make the move and appeal to the other Southern groups to help them. If not, they are justing wasting their time.

=Lovenest;4295063319>The MEND and NDVF should extend their friendly hands "across the Niger".>>>> Now wait a minute here. These buffoons are telling the rest of you that the damn oil belongs to them alone and you are asking them to extend a leprous hand across the Niger. I want to know who made the koolade you been drinking for too long. These people want nothing to do with anyone else including you putrid arsed southerners. What is so difficult for you guys to understand? If they needed help from a buncha southern parasites, they would asked for it a long time ago. You people never cease to amaze with. That glue you been sniffing is startin' to kill some brain cells.Get your nose away from glue cans.

They should make the move and appeal to the other Southern groups to help them. If not, they are justing wasting their time.

>>>>They are wasting their time alright. Even I could not have said it any better. Some smarts for a change here.

>>>>> It is a good thing to dream nothing wrong with that. You want a unified south and I ask you who the hell will lead such a totally discombobulated organization? It will never happen.By your name and the little "agadi nwyi ya agaghi.............ya o ga agba oso je ije" crap , would you then submit to Yoruba leadership of such a front? Phew!!! That stinks, don't it. Better yet the Yoruba will NEVER submit to any form of Ibo leadership. And you have the rabble-rousing,decadent Ijaws to deal with too. See any problem here? I do. Shove it,pal. Really shove it. Keep dreaming. All I got to say to you socalled Southerners is better shape up or shuffle off.

Nonsense!

Who do you speak for? The South-South, Militants or the criminal elements of the creek, once again gaseous nonsense.

Your article is factually wrong and lacked neither head nor tail. Article means articlulating your point - what exactly does the people that you purport to speak for want? You did not tell us.

Listen here you are wrong when you wrote:

"The other day, Afenifere speaking for the non existent Southern Nigeria or correctly for the Yoruba, suddenly found their high frequency voice they apparently lost 9 years ago to rail against their Northern partners about their perceived lost equal-partnership position and to protest against the "Northernisation of Nigeria" by an ungrateful Yaradua "

Afenifere criticized Obasanjo for his 8 years in office and are still doing so out of office. You lied!

You do not know what you are saying when you wrote this:

"all blinded by their ethnocentric supremacy, all failed to give a second thought to the issue of the Niger Delta which is firmly anchored in the belief that the Oil and the region and it's people are the spoils of war to compensate the Hausa/Fulani/Yoruba victors"

The oil belong to Nigeria as of today July 1st 2008. You need to wake up from your slumber deep of some oil of the Niger Delta. You goofed!

This is inane:

Ndiigbo at this point are out of it till only God knows when because Obasanjo effectively severed them from the mainstream Nigeria as he dangled in his puppet which surprisingly came alife and progressively danced without strings

Obasanjo gave the Ndigbos mainstream appointments and they danced without strings because he wanted them to. If in doubt, ask Soludo after Obasanjo, of his experience. You are confused!

Now the issue is what exactly do the Niger Delta people want and what are they pretending to be asking for? They are pretending to be asking for 50% derivation while they are busy writing to the UN seeking their own republic.

Nigeria as a whole is not working and the problem does not reside in the NigerDelta creek alone. There is a need for an holistic approach to solving the problems. Which means that the Niger Delta must be read to work with the other parts of Nigeria that are already tired of this oppresive and parastic composition.
Ethnic blame game will not cut it, but will further isolate them from the supports that they badly needed if they are ever going to succeed in their venture. You are just a bad mouthpiece just like most spokepersons for that region.

>>>> Now you folks understand where this creep is coming from. Dude has been writing about the darn article even before reading same. This is the problem I have with Nigerians. He has just directly commented in response to the very article that everyone has been commenting on. Isn't that something. I tell you, this gimp makes me wanna puke all freaking day.Even your putrid line of reasoning is enough to make anyone with a modicum of intelligence totally ignore your rapid banter. You are fast becoming a non-factor in this forum with your penchant for ubiquitious participation, whether invited or not.
