It is often the most difficult thing in the world for some of us to admit our mistakes. Our pride won't let us. Our self-image won't let us. Somewhere in our hearts, we believe that if we ever admit to being wrong, it will have some devastating effect on us. But the reality is -- ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. There's not one person -- except Jesus Christ -- who has ever walked the earth who has never made a mistake, who has never committed a sin. Not one of us is perfect.

I am somebody who takes pride in admitting my mistakes. It makes me human, because as they say, a man who does not make mistakes makes nothing at all.

It is therefore with humble heart that I apologise to my readers for seemingly misleading them or insulting their intelligence when I wrote that piece on Obasanjo and Andy Uba’s meeting and extolling their loyalty to each other. It seems I was myself misled by an article that I read about their meeting. I wrote the article in very good faith, based on the human and philosophical perspectives and it was not meant to eulogise Obasanjo or Andy Uba or their relationship, friendship or otherwise for that matter. I therefore sincerely apologise if I have inadvertently offended the sensibilities of the many people who read my original article.

Since that article, I have been lambasted and vilified for praising this virtue of loyalty, as seemingly exhibited by both men. More importantly to me, I have been corrected on the facts. I have been made aware of many basic facts of Obasanjo and Andy Uba’s meeting and relationship.

One is that Obasanjo and Andy Uba met AFTER Obasanjo became the President of Nigeria and not before. Secondly, I was corrected that Andy Uba put Obasanjo up in a hotel and NOT in his own house. Thirdly, Andy Uba’s qualification is a subject of some contention in that nobody quite knows whether he is a medical doctor or a Ph D holder or maybe none at all. This latter issue remains contentious, but does not really matter to me, as I still believe anybody can ascribe to himself or herself what they want the world to believe of them. It is up to the world to verify this and treat them as such. In this case, Andy Uba has not come out to defend his title.

Thanks to feedback from “Dem” from the Nigeria Village Square:

“OBJ met Andy Uba in America AFTER the former had been elected President. OBJ was booked into a hotel that Uba felt was unbefitting Nigeria's President elect. Consequently, Uba put up the Obasanjos in another hotel at his own expense. Furthermore, Uba has never claimed to be a medical doctor. The initial story was that he claimed a doctorate in Physiotherapy (aka Physical Therapy) which he has since been unable to substantiate. Having said all that, loyalty can never be at the expense of the people. Thank/reward friends and contemporaries yes; but never at the expense of the nation or the greater good”. I am in complete agreement with the last sentence.

However, having said these, I did say at the beginning of my original article that “This article, nor the quotations above, is about the good or bad, the right or wrong or the positive or negative aspects of political associations, friendships or rewards. It is mainly about the loyalty of humanity towards one another and the philosophies behind them. It is about the values of our political development in Nigeria”

I also reiterated that “I was at first dismissive of the story, but then had another read of it, read between the lines, mused over its content, and then asked around as to its veracity. I have not succeeded in any way as to determine whether this story is true or not, ……….. I am not quite sure of the authenticity or veracity of the story, but if it is true, it is a symbol of friendship and loyalty from one human being to the other”.

I read the story of their meeting in an article published in Nigeria Today Online (unfortunately, I cannot recollect the authorship or the publication date), and waited for anybody to challenge the story. After a week, nobody did, and I assumed it must have some elements of truth in it, and hence decided to write on my own human side of it. Never in the article did I insinuate that Obasanjo or Andy were good men, or that they did well for Nigeria. That was not the issue. It was the human side, and I also near the end of the article said that “Without going into the merits and demerits of this uncommon bond between the two men, it was this single human value ... This does not mean that I will condone their various parts in piling untold hardship and poverty on their people” and further that “The fact that Andy Uba allegedly rigged the elections in Anambra State to emerge the winner is not the issue here. At least he has been removed and disgraced. The fact that Andy Uba allegedly smuggled some money in the Presidential jet or that he bought certain farming equipment for his mentor’s farm do not matter here”.

From this, dear compatriots, I have not supported either Obasanjo or Andy Uba or condoned their actions. I was just marvelling at their loyalty to one another, and wishing they had transmuted this virtue to helping their people – Nigerians. At the same time, I was condemning the lack of loyalty often exhibited by our leaders and politicians and which has caused untold hardships to Nigerians because of their selfishness and utter lack of sincerity and commitment to one another and to their people.

And I concluded as thus “The problem is letting the good in us overcome the evil, and using it for the benefit of mankind, because we do not live in isolation. Obasanjo will always be grateful, good and loyal to Andy Uba and so will Uba reciprocate to Obasanjo. Let them transfer this good to their people – Nigerians. As they say, as a man sow shall he reap……….”

So dear readers, I was not deliberately condoning what Obasanjo and Andy Uba might have done to Nigerians through their loyalty to each other, but in a way actually highlighting the fact that their loyalty to each other, much as it is commended, has not meant or done a lot to contributing to the progress of the country.

Again, we (or at least, I) do not know the true story of how they met. I have now heard several different stories of how they met and what help they gave to each other. I suppose the only way we will ever know is if both men say it.

Once again, these are my apologies and my thoughts. I stand corrected. I am also still standing.

On the first paragraph:

You can sure ram straight to the point without all those justifications/solicitations/rationalisations expressed therein. You made the mistake, you bear the brunt. Now how are you sure your retraction is not in itself a mistake? Sorry, but you come across as a crass flip-flopper.

I think your retraction in itself is probably another mistake.

Babatoks gan,

Let me be the first to heartily commend you on your retraction.

Me, I would eat a bag of peppered hot nails before I admit to making a mistake...but then you see, I am not a nice person. I am very shallow, I give bribes happily and take bribes even more joyously...shall I go on?.... I am a 126% corrupted, licentious, greedy, bigoted and vainglorious person...bad through and through...gosh!! (as my ajebota cousin would say) see what a good influence this brief exposure to your brave humility has had on me: making me confess to all sorts...:D.

Babatoks, forgive those who chastise you...as a IATA certified Drinks therapist, I can easily diagnose that several have reached the belligerent stage in the series of after-effects that follows the traditional Xmas boozeapalooza. Some people at this stage have been known to pick fights with their own underwear....

Anyway, in the true spirit of this European pagan Winter Solstice (AKA Xmas), I accept your apologies with no reservations. May the coming year bring much happiness to you and yours.

The retraction of the Obasanjo and Andy Uba’s story by the original writer on loyalty is contrite, timely and commendable. It is a mature path to follow to prove that its human to make mistakes and divine to forgive. It also proves one's love for a country so injured by the duo(Obj and Andy) for their so called loyalty which though exemplary from the outset was quickly converted into personal insatiable greed, obtuse insensitivity and callous inhumane treatment to the masses called Nigeria.

Without equivocations the numbered chronicle below will shade same meaningful light on the Obasanjo and Andy Saga with following questions and answers:

1) Did Obasanjo and Andy Uba meet before or after Obasanjo became President?

Their loyalty-meeting in question preceded Obasanjo’s Presidency and was hatched in California soon after Obasonjo came out of Abacha’s jail term. A friend from late Mrs. Obsanjo’s place had required Andy Uba’s companion to visit the Obasanjos at their crappy hotel. What started as a casual visit became worrisome to Andy Uba when he later realized that the man they were visiting was a former Head of State of Nigeria. Whatever was a kind and sympathetic side of Andy Uba was shifted into fast gears when he rationalized that it was too condescending to house a former Nigerian Head of State in the lowest of lows among California hotels.

Andy Uba who had no real jobs to write home about at that time quickly scouted money through immediate friends and transferred the Obasanjo’s into a befitting hotel and neighborhood. The old Baba appreciated the kind gestures and realizing he had no immediate means for repayment wished Andy God’s repayment and good luck in all his future endeavors. As days progressed to weeks, and weeks to months, Baba’s trust on the young Andy intensified into a father and son relationship as Baba’s needs took exponential dimensions that needed swift intervention.

Baba had gotten sick or needed a medical attention which in the US is a financial nightmare due to its associated high cost. Most people are covered by several health insurances which Baba did not have nor could pay for since he was allegedly broke at that time. His adopted son, Andy could not afford one either. But Andy’s wits switched to overdrive again, prompting him to broker a FREE medical treatment for Baba through a Medical Doctor from Abia State, Nigeria. Consistent with all medical check-ups, the good Samaritan Doctor took care of Baba from then on through several follow-up check-ups without demanding a “shikom” from both parties. Eventually, Baba got well and returned to Nigeria and the Medical Doctor relocated to the East coast.

.

2) What happened when events turned and Obsanajo became the President?
As should be expected, Obansanjo invited both Andy Uba and the Medical Doctor to Abuja during his inauguration party. In addition, Obasanjo solidified Andy Uba’s position as a personal confidant. The Doctor was also made one of Obasanjo’s personal physicians abroad. Both moves were magnanimous by all intents and purposes. Who wouldn’t?

3) Does Andy Uba have a PhD or an MD degree?

Flat capital NO! Andy does not have any of those degrees and some of his class mates in Canada where he made his first academic stint insist he did not get a first degree either. The reason was simple and can be summed up as academic laziness because when others struggled to attend classes and pass exams, Andy skipped classes or hardily attended complaining to anybody who listened that it was too cold in Canada. As others struggled through rigorous academic exercise, Andy perfected his socialization skills. Allegedly he first modified his Igbonized name, Nnamdi to an Americanized version “Andy”. Then he flirted, dating openly and embarrassingly under his in-law’s roof. Then his academic truancy worsened when he was forced to hurriedly marry in order to save one of the girl’s social predicament of pregnancy without wedlock. They were blessed by a kid and a jobless man with a kid is a feat any where in the World. The marriage later went to dust when Andy made an unprecedented switch and maneuver to be closer to the Obasanjo’s by marrying into late Mrs. Stella Obasanjo’s circle(family or from same locality). If this assertion is true, he and Obasanjo are sealed as in-laws in addition to being close friends.

Over time Andy’s World was closing on him with no much room to escape the mounting family, academic and social pressures. Then Andy left Canada for greener pastures in California which is billed as a warmer zone in the USA. Since it is not easy for a Leopard to shade its patches, Andy continued in his truancy mode when he met Obasanjo with a few more intrigues that are not worthy in this write-up.

So far this Obasanjo and Uba’s saga could have proven a true or exemplary Nigerian connection spanning several States where everybody was each other’s keeper without money as the basis of relationship. Andy Uba’s intial reaction to uplift or upgrade Obasanjo as a matter of principle is consistent and typical of Anambra people who decry indecency as their love of excellence and class are their visible hallmarks wherever they may be. But what peeves Anambrians and all people of noble intentions, is that how could Obasanjo and Andy Uba convert a relationship that could have elevated Anambra people into higher pedestal into a relationship made in hell as a curse to punish Anambra people? Imagine Uba used his direct connection to help build roads, hospitals, revitalize education and dependable electricity, Anambra people and whole Ndigbo could have asked him to rule them even if he processed the lowest required academic standard to be a governor. What every body in Nigeria is yearning for is a true leader and not academicians which are not scarce in Nigeria.

But instead of using his magical conduit to save his people, he chose the path of self-aggrandizement laced with Destruction of a People to impress the master. As if that is not enough injustice, he begat his brother Chris Uba who unlawfully imprisoned an elected Governor, Dr. Chris Ngige thereby destabilizing Anambra people in a untold turmoil. Yet, he rigged and bulldozed himself into power with all the blessing from Aso Rock and Obasanajo’s political might. Those actions and more for which Obasanjo did not see fit to stop depict Obasanjo as the worst enemy of a “people” that came to his aide when nobody else cared. All the political appointments he made that are supposed to show him as a balanced leader are mere smokescreens crafted to confuse the uninitiated. To add insults into the whole saga, Andy Uba had the temerity to claim an academic accolade he is not qualified for in a midst of Anambra people who are known for their high academic achievements as exemplified by their well known schools such as Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, CKS, Onitsha, Merchants of Light, Oba, and numerous others to list here.

Thank goodness that Obsananjo’s charade called election in Anambra was nullified for good. Now when Andy Uba flaunts his brand of PhD, we accept it for what it means- Politically Hired Destroyer (PhD).
