Prayers And Deliverance: A New Weapon For Simony PDF Print E-mail
By Aisagbon Omogiade

The word simony was coined from the name of biblical Simon (Acts 8:18-24) who offered Peter and John money so that they could give him the power with which they laid hands on the new converts in Samaria  to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Apostle Peter’s reaction was swift. He placed a curse on Simon because he thought he could buy the gift of God with money. Selling and buying of benefice is generally refered  to as simony.

Martin Luther the former catholic monk who later formed the Lutheran church had accused some catholic priests of simony because he felt it was wrong to clloect money from a christian before the priest absolved him/her of sins.Though the catholic priests of the epoch were using the money for projects of the church, the practice had long been stopped. It is now the turn of the pentecostal pastors.

During my few years sojourn in Benin-City  before I re-migrated to Europe,I had witnessed many young girls going in large numbers into a makeshift building that was housing a church. After many weeks of observation, I had gone to a relative nearby to ask him why it was only girls that attended the church. What he told me was very startling;he said men attend the church too but that they were not as many as the young girls. He went further to explain to me that the pastor prays for those girls so as to have their visas easily for Italy. He said the girls pay the pastor between N10,000 to N15,000 for the prayers and those who succeed to get their visas will pay him $2,000 as soon as they are settled in Italy.

Armed with the knowledge of what those girls were going to do in Italy, I got worried whether a pastor is biblically authorised to pray to God to grant certain girls smooth passage to a place they will engage in prostitution - a trade that is vehimently condemned by the bible. I watched this pastor grow materially on daily basis. From an old car I met him with, in less than two years he had a jeep.

My maternal aunt came to my house early in the morning one day to ask for a loan of N100,000. When I questioned her what she wanted to do with that sum,she said her daughter(my cousin)has been asked to do deliverance in one church that she had marine-spirit.When I inquired what relationship has the money with spiritual deliverance, she said the consultation fees for “faith clinic” is N10,000 and each time she will go for deliverance is N10,000 and before she will get to the G O(General Overseer) who will conduct the full deliverance she would have exhausted the sum she was requesting for.

I asked her the name of the church and the G O. She told me.After about five minutes intensive thoughts, I told my aunt that I had the money but unfortunately, I will not give it to her. I said that there was no where in the bible that it is written to pay pastors to conduct deliverance for any body. She left disappointed but I was completely at peace with my conscience.

About three years ago, a local church in Genova invited this G O for a programme. When I saw the poster,I made up my mind to see the man who eventually took more than N150,000 from my aunt for the “deliverance” he conducted for my cousin. At the end of the usual disco-like praise worship, this Rev,Dr. Chief  came on stage. He told us that we were in Europe to make money. He said we must sow a seed of faith to enable us succeed. After about thirty minutes of jumping from one corner of the stage to the other,he said that it was now time for the sowing of the seed..He called those who had €2,000 to come out.Nobody came out.€1,500 nobody come out,€1,000 nobody. He looked hard at the congregation and asked, “are you people so poor here”

The money was now reduced to €500.Only one person came out-a Nigerian who runs a cosmetic store in down-town Genova. From there he asked those who had any thing to sow a seed to come out provided it is not less than €50.He prayed for them and asked them to watch out how God was going to bless them.It is worthy of note that the Nigerian who gave out €500. was ejected from her store by a court order for non-payment of rents a day after the end of the church’s programme. She may by now not have fully recovered from the shock.

I went to Rome for a conference recently. On a Sunday before I came back to base,I went to a local church with a friend that put me up.There, it was a different story altogether. The pastor during his sermon accused his congregation for not being faithful.he said a member of the congregation had bought a jeep for a native doctor in Nigeria but “ here in the church no body donates nothing”.He made it clear that from that moment whoever was coming for prayers should have €500 ready other wise he would not pray for such person. When we were leaving, I asked my friend how God can even answer prayers said for people who are still dailly engaged in prostitution. His answer was that he needs to go to church on Sundays and that the pastor was his friend.

These various methods of obtaining money from unsuspecting believers are against the teachings of Jesus Christ. As a matter of fact, there is a General Overseer in Edo State that you cannot see without having bought N50,000 worth of telephone recharge cards for him which are later re-sold to the congregation members at the kiosk nearby.

In the gospel according to St.Matthew (10:7-8) the bible says:-And as ye go, preach, saying. The kingdomof heavenis at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils:freely ye have received, freely give. This is the instuction given by Christ to his disciples and this is the bedrock of christianity.

“If you believe what you like in the gospels, and reject what you dont like, it is not the gospels you believe but yourself”- St.Augustine

About two days ago, our one and only Sabella gave his personal opinion about the idea of God and his attitudes toward religion especially Christianity.
I responded by saying that I'm not exactly like Sabella who totally dropped the idea of God.While I may still uphold God and remained a practising christian{but privately},I however denounced several of our christians and wrote off Muslims and their barbaric Islam. I have my reasons and they are based on past and present experiences.
One respondent, Lebaney, seemed to be rather offended by my submissions.By his utterances,he must be a Muslim.I don't pity him and owe him no apology in the way I painted and shall continue to paint Islam and Muslims until I die.I have no time for them here now.
Another big dog, ILN TOO rained curses and abuses upon me for reasons best known only to his muddy head. He must have ran into my ambush in one of his stupid utterances in the past.Possibly,he was propagating blatant lies and I tried to cuff his basket mouth.I'm not scared of him and his likes.
I came to this site not to demonstrate academic jingoism like him.I came here simply to fellowship with Nigerians and to hear their own side of the story on several issues and to chip in whenever I feel like doing so.
Also, whenever I discover error or lie,I shall take it upon myself to make necessary corrections.I may not be academically sound by ILN TOO's standard{since he is a "Ph D"holder and Professor of English language} but I'm a well experienced Nigerian with very sound background in Nigeria's political history. Coconut is beautiful,in the inside, where it counts most! To know me is to love me.
Hopefully we shall run into each other in furure.
Your recent experiences in Benin,Nigeria and in Genoa,Italy are quite similar to several experiences that I had before and which led in part to my staying away from Christian churches. It also prompted me to distanced myself from christian's unholy activities and practices.
I'm also sure that Sabella did not just wake up one day and announced to the world that he no longer believes in God.He must have got series of new awareness hence he concluded that there couldn't have been somebody known as God.
The late Dr.Tai Solarin was an Anglican before he went to Europe. He served in British Army.It was his experiences during the second world war that changed his mind and life forever.Tai could not understand why the Jews who are said {in our Holy Bible} to be God's first born children suffered such horrible fate.Where is that God he asked and continued to ask until he finally concluded that there was none. That was Tai Solarin and that is our Sabella but I'm not exactly like that. They have the right to their opinions.
My problem all along has been with our so called christians and christian Pastors. My problem is the various interpretations of our Bible texts. My problem is our various denominations and strange religious practices. My problem is lies and frauds in the house of God.Is it not supposed to be a Holy Temple? Are we not supposed to be Holy people? Habba!
What you experienced in Benin has been around for quite a while and it is not restricted to the corridor of Nigeria alone. It is well alive here in USA and other parts of the world where christianity is practiced.
Have you heard of Jimmy Swaggart,Benny Hinn,Jim Bakker,Robert Tilton etc? What you even saw in Benin and Genoa are child's play when you watch those above named individuals. You would ask the question;where art thou God?
Nowadays,Spirituality had vanished from the pulpit.Health and wealth propagation have taken over.Anywhere you go, it is money. Ministers of religions no longer care about life after death.Life here on earth is of paramount importance to them. The welfare of the flock is no longer their top priority."God's blessing" upon them is on top of the list of their daily routine. They built mighty mansions for themselves and sat upon large amount of peoples' money. All kinds of method have been used to pick people's pocket and afterwards nicknamed the robbery as "God's blessing".
I know Bishop David Oyedepo, the leader and founder of Winners Chapel. His town is not too far from my mother's own in Kwara State where I grew up with my grandmother. He has the largest congregation in the whole universe and established a University called Covenant University. The University however is one of the most expensive in Nigeria despite millions if not billions that are collected as tithes and offerings time after time.
His hometown, Omu-Aran is very wretched and filty and stinking like every other place despite his vast wealth.
I knew Rev.Adeboye, the pathetic leader of Redeemed Christian Church. He was a Mathematics teacher at The University of Ilorin also in Kwara State. With his academic background,is it not sad that the same Adeboye continues to turn deaf ears to the cries and agony of people using Ibadan - Lagos Express road every month when he is conducting the so called Holy Ghost retreat, when it would take more than six hours to get to Ibadan from Lagos? Those who have fallen victim to Adeboye's insensitivities could tell it better than I and they shall continue to "thank" the man of God for their pains and sufferings. Yet,he is a Preacher of God's word,a Minister of God.Where is the compassionate of Christ. Where is love, the greatest of all commandments?
Go to Jah Maharaji's religious camp, it is almost like Sodom.Go to Joshua's whatever,it is devil's own land.Go to Primate Olobayo and his Church of Yahweh abracadabra. Then ask yourself;what are these people worshiping or serving? God? Excuse me!
Rev.King is now on death row.His offence - murder!
One of Obj's Minister,a Reverend gentleman died in plane crash not too long ago. After his sudden death, all his hidden mistresses showed up with kids to ask for their kids' portion of his vast hidden wealth.
The list of Catholic Priests caught having sex with younger boys is still so long. A shame and gross abomination. Episcopal/Anglican are now Ordaining homosexuals as Priests.
In the days of segregation and discriminations in America, Churches all across the South actively participated in the crime. Most Christian institutions in the South would not admit blacks.Yet on Sundays every church is filled to the brim, worshiping an unknown God.
Why then should I be a member of any church?I need not be among these wogs.I better be alone. My church is my heart and that is where my God lives.

Amidst all these 419 pastors, there are true and selfless Ministers of God which over the years have been telling us and indeed the World the truth about Christianity without asking for a kobo.

How many people including me actually gives heed to these True Pastors? Do we not rain abuses on them?

NIGERIANS SHOULD OPEN THIER EYES BECAUSE THESE 419 PASTORS HAVE ACTUALLY BROUGHT ABOUT THE DEGRADED SOCIETY OF TODAY.

It is a fact known to reasonable Nigerians that most of these churches are nothing more than business centres and their 'Pastors, Bishops, General Overseers, Primates and Founders' are criminals masquerading as men of God (gods?). All these churches are registered in the names of the Founders and the board of trustees are always composed of the 'Founder' who also doubles as 'Presiding Pastor, Senior Pastor, Bishop, His Holiness, Primate or Supreme Evangelist'. His wife is the second in command and is also a Pastor, Her Holiness, Mother in Israel or Mother in Egypt or Deputy Bishop while his sons or sons in-law are other members of the board, meaning that it is all in the family. All properties that belongs to the churches are procured through thithes, love offerings, seed offerings, multiplication offerings and convenant offerings the Pastors extort from the gullible congregation but registered in the name of the Founder. We all saw what happenend when Bishop Idahosa died and the fact that Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor decided to establish his 'own' church after an arguement with the late Bishop over money:razz::razz:.

Taking the example of Winners Chapel a little bit further which will also be relevant to other 'miracle and bible believing' churches, apart from Convenant University which costs billions of naira ( in members' thithes but I might be wrong here in which case I would like to know how Bishop Oyedepo and his wife raised the billions to establish those schools) to build and atrociously expensive, the Church also have the 'Faith kindergarten, Faith Nursery, Faith Primary and Faith Secondary Schools'. these are also very expensive and the gullible members forget easily that 'Faith' is the name of the Bishop's wife and that she has simply claimed the right of ownership by naming the schools after herself. How many members of Winners Chapel can afford to send their children to these schools owned by the church? Secondly, how many Winners members who are indigent or their children has been awarded scholarships to attend any of these schools owned by the Bishop and his wife? If the schools are meant to 'groom future leaders and propagate the gospel', why are they so expensive or future leadership of this country is only meant for those with deep pockets to send their children to the schools? Why is it that it is only the corrupt politicians whom we rail and rave against every day are the ones who could afford the fees being charged by 'Convenant University':mad:? In case the Bishop dies today (God forbid. We pray that he will live up to 100 years propagating the gospel and winning souls for God:rolleyes:), who takes over as the Presiding Bishop of Winners or that question is left for the Holy ghost to answer when the time comes?

If the members are content to be donating their hard-earned money to build schools that they and their children can never afford to attend and still think they are 'Winners' I doff my hat to them and wish them all the best.:cry:

After all said and done, I agree that there are still some Christian religious leaders who are honest and speak with authority that comes from God. You can never hear them preaching about prosperity or how God is ready and able to forgive your sins once you ensure that your thithe is paid and you also 'donate' generously to the church even if the money is obtained from 419 activities:):):). These are the religious leaders you don't see dancing or jumping around the pulpit when preaching and are modest in their dressing. You also don't hear about them having fleets of expensive SUVs and talking about not serving a 'poor God' or 'poor gods':D:D:D:D. Nigeria is a free country and there is nothing we could do except to continue speaking out against the corruption of religion but I am sure someone is going to start foaming at the mouth soon and mention something about being possessed by demons because of this criticisms.

An interesting piece but one would have expected that there is a suggestion or at best an advice on what people should do. For instance, If you know the truth it shall set you free! not the prayers of another Nigerian Simon! We have countless numbers of religious bigots!
Karl marx must be right in a sense Religion he posits is the Opium of the masses, It gives a short term high. The terrible aspect of the whole thing is that those involved in this advanced fraud make claims in the name of the lord with reckless abandon.

One thing I know, Demons do not die but man do, No matter the intensity of fall down and die you chant, you have a responsiblity to perform. Go to him because he is your father, forgiver and friend.

My advise is that one should stay clear and watch carefully about any church were they refer to the Pastor and his wife as Daddy and Mummy.
All these people are just HUSTLERS.
The simple truth is that these people lack knowledge,The bible clearly tells us that "My people perish because they lack knowledge"
I am not surprised at pastors praying for ITALY BOUND HUSTLERS.When pastors pray for known criminals our leaders included.
When Uzor Orji Kalu was arrested he had prayer worriors praying for him, imagine some of the prayer points
1.Let all those that garther against you in this case scatter by fire of the holy ghost."Because you are desendant of Isreal and God has promised he will bless those that bless you and curse those that curse you"

As far as am concern these Majority of these religious thing be it Christianity,Islam or traditional worship the leaders are just there to make a living.

The whole thing is simple. Just pick your bible, no matter the version of it, and read about the life, sayings and most importantly doings of Jesus Christ (at least Christians are born into him so he should be the sole barometer). You would find out that this man (called Jesus) was a great man, a charitable man who believed that the survival of his people was more important than his own. A man who fed the hungry: a man who healed the sick a man who provided comfort to the hopeless and helpless in the society.

Can anyone say so for the modern pastors these days? In Nigeria they have turned everything upside down. Little wonder some people are turning away. They have turned Christianity to a venture that is increasingly making Jesus out of place and character. In fact they have told Jesus (the same man they claim to be born-again in) that they could never have lived his kind of life because to them it would be unacceptable. Sadly they are now making Jesus Christ a man consigned to the woods.

They tax the unemployed, they tax helpless widows and other seemingly hopeless people, and they tax the newly employed youths in the guise of tithes. This is criminal. They are in the fore front of commercially inspired revivals. These days they are now into building universities, not the normal Christian universities you have in Europe in terms of the reasonable tuition fees, but big time tuition paying universities owned solely (though with some elaborate schemes) by the presiding pastor. Winners Church is a vivid example. They have scattered everything, you don’t even know what being a Christian means by any stretch of imagination. As they(the pastors) have defined it in their normally warped criminal logic with unabashed intention to dupe unsuspecting people.

The other day one character from Texas who called himself Pastor Oladele was already planning how to build estate in Texas for his retirement and other of his redeemed pastors, meanwhile we live here in Nigeria where majority of his congregation do not know what the next 5 years hold for them. Yet he will tell me he is a man of who is in Jesus Christ. Juxtapose that with the life of Jesus, then you can better analyze his mindset.

Criminals and bold faced crooks are now ruling the so called Christianity conclave in Nigeria. I do know that very soon God shall answer our prayers. Amen

Esteemed Villagers,
I agree with all the views expressed so far and also wish to commend the author for shinning the light on this religious 419 that will do us more harm than hurricane iwuruwuru and babacracy combined together.
Reminds of one adman who wanted to use the pope to advertise his new tea brand by asking the pope to just say "give us this day our daily tea" for about 5000 dollars. THe pope looked at him calmly and said no. The man continued and even raised the sum to one million dollars, the pope still refused.
The poor adman came back home to complain to his staff that he does not know how much the bread makers paid the same pope to be mouthing " give us this day our daily bread" every now and then Jokingly let me add that the poor adman never heard of thou shall not live by bread alone.:D:D:D:D
What am I saying, a combination of crass illiteracy,( religious exegesis), grinding poverty and want in the midst of plenty in a globalsised world have made daddy and mummy overseers to milk gullible Nigerians to death.
Villagers, may not know that since I relocated to Nigeria in February, I have come to realise that the nation indeed has a very long way to go in all areas of our life.:mad:
May the true God save us.
