Another Award: DSAN Honours NVS with Award for Excellence. PDF Print E-mail
By Ahaoma Kanu

“For the show of care and concern that this web group showed during Baby Andrew fund raising early this year, we want to honour the Nigeria Village Square with this award to show our gratitude for their being there for us. They showed us love by reaching out and touching our hearts.”

Those were the words from Mr. Chibuzo Ifeanyi the Chairman, Planning Committee of the Down Syndrome Association of Nigeria (DSAN) during their 2008 Awareness Week Dinner and Fundraising event held at the Pearl Hall of the Golden Gate Restaurant Ikoyi Lagos when he presented an Award for Excellence to the Nigeria Village Square on Thursday, the 18th of September 2008.

The Dinner and Fundraising were part of the activities marking the association’s awareness week which started on the 10th of September 2008 and ended with at Thanks Giving service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jubilee House Surulere, Lagos.

The dinner started with ace presenter and FRCN’s Cordelia Okpei along with Mr. Jide Benson taking the guests through an exciting guide towards the reason for the gathering.

Ogaga and Ruffman who is DSAN’s Ambassador presented the song; There is a Giant in You before Mr. Uche Nworah gave a speech entitled Fulfilling Corporate Social Responsibility Towards Nigerian Children With Special Needs. He recounted how he came into contact with the association after reading an article on the Nigeria Village Square about Baby Andrew Duku.

Uche Nworah recounts how NVS came into partnership with DSAN over Baby Andrew while he watches with his father, Rev. Anthony Duku

“Members in the site came together and donated within three weeks some amount needed for his surgery in India.” He said.

He then went on and informed of the activities of the Nigeria Village Square, listing some of the achievements and tasks the web group had undertaken as well as its plans to come out with more initiatives that will help people with special needs through associations like the DSAN.

Later, Uche Nworah was called upon to kick off the fundraising event as well as the appeal fund needed for Baby Victoria Ajayi and Chinonso Okonkwo both of whom are living with Down Syndrome and have holes in the heart requiring surgery.

Nworah called on fellow Villager, Mrs. Ronke Macaulay and together they promised that they would bring up the matter on the board at NVS and would come over to the association’s centre to drop their individual donations.

While presenting the award to NVS, Mr. Chibuzo Ifeanyi commended the Nigeria Village Square for the help they rendered and have been giving the association and prayed that the partnership would continue. He commented that he had become addicted to the site after the Baby Andrew story and was impressed with the intellectual display there.

Mr. Uche Nworah and Mr. Ahaoma Kanu received the award on behalf of the Nigeria Village Square.

Other recipients of awards at the dinner were Soroptomist International of Surulere, Rosabel Leo Bunnett Advertising, Punuka Attorneys and Solicitors, Grange School, while Mrs Mosun Sofola, Mr. Ahaoma Kanu and Mr. Chuks Etuka received individual Awards for their dedication, support and commitment to the association.

A well deserved award. It is heartwarming to see a site that lends itself beyond just cyber chat into pro activism as appropriate. NVS has done very well.

Special kudos must go to Ahaoma, Uche and Ronke who gave selflessly. Well done all around.
