Stripping Carlisle Umunnah's Article on Biafra PDF Print E-mail
By Afolabi Ogunleye

Carlisle Umunnah's article, “ The Great State of Biafra Is Strong and Alive”  was meant to enlighten his audience about the ‘Biafran Idea’ - according to him - but not only has his piece failed at enlightening this commentator [and many others out there, I believe], it also assaulted the reader’s sensibilities and left him somewhat confused as to what the author’s original intentions were in that article. I will explain how.

First, the author starts off by talking about how the Biafran idea was conceived and executed on May 30, 1967, after years of persecution of the people of Igbo extraction in Northern Nigeria. Well that is common knowledge, I thought, but I nevertheless prepared to learn something new from this author as I read on. After all, he has said in his introduction that his piece is meant to be and eye-opener for those who are less informed about Biafra and Biafrans so that "they might discover a world of wisdom for their children and grandchildren".

Perhaps you can imagine my expectations of his piece then - and my later suprise, when I reached the second paragraph of his article where he started off thus:

"We all know that 2007 is filled with measures of uncertainties and 1966 issues/concerns are yet to be addressed. Corruption and greed then, corruption and greed today are unprecedented.  It has become clear that Obasanjo and his cronies will gamble and heat up yet again the body polity. Third term manipulations will be a child’s play considering the contextual theatrical jibes of the actors of this experiment called Nigeria."

Wasn't this supposed to be an enlightening treatise about Biafra? What has it got to do with 2007 or President Obasanjo today? I asked myself these questions but I still gave the author the benefit of doubt - it might be a writing strategy unique to him, you never know.

So he goes on: "By 1967..one Anthony Ermosele Enahoro..". Wait a minute; did I miss something? I wondered. He had just mentioned the event milestone of May 30, 1967 a few sentences above. How come he is saying "By 1967.." again? Oh well, probably a small oversight. I kept on reading for the next two or so paragraphs; he quotes Enahoro then he later quotes Obasanjo from his book "The Animal called Man" about a certain comment on the need for the Constitution of Nigeria to include a clause that would provide for a "right of secession". Says the author, "This apparently is a new trend for a man whose interviews and public proclamations indeed impeded or resisted even the creation of Midwest."

Ok, that definitely doesn't tell me anything new, nor does it touch on the Biafran cause in the remotest way that would make it worthy information that will benefit my "children or grand-children", I thought. Plus Biafra is not Mid-West anyways. But I stubbornly read on, believing that somehow, this writer must have a special message - the type we can share with generations yet unborn. Unfortunately, there will be more disappointments to come.

Here goes Umunnah: "As we celebrate the declaration of the great republic - Biafra on May 30, 1967, a battle of attrition executed gallantly and fearlessly, we remember with pride and honor that it was the right thing to do to secure o[u]r existence. The actions and freedom of three years which, actions and freedom was differed in January 15, 1970 is up and running again through peaceful means manned by MOSSAB.."

Is this an Igbo village-meeting speech to invoke the spirit of Biafran camaraderie or what? This sounds more like some back-slapping, morale-boosting speech than an attempt to "educate" or "enlighten" a diverse audience that include, according to the Carlisle Umunnah, "some writers, detractors and enemies of peoples’ survival and existence (who) write tirelessly and meaninglessly with venoms".

No, I thought, I am not giving up on this man too easily. I have to find out that inter-generational enlightenment he hopes to share through his article. And on I read:

"Without the bravery of our men and women who fought gallantly to protect our villages, territorial waters and lands, the likes of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Ekwesiliezes and others would not have survived or lived to have their opportunities today. We remember, revere and adore these great men and women, living and fallen heroes today and forever. All hail thee Biafra. Without your volunteerism, Ndiigbo would have been destroyed off of its earth-plate by bloodthirsty Arab-Islamic fundamentalists, enemies of righteousness, enemies of God." Huh?!

This is akin to Okonkwo's (from Achebe's “Things Fall Apart”) palm wine-inspired, chest-beating speech under a large tree in the Village Square to rally his kin to rise and defend themselves and appreciate the sacrifice of others before them - something which is good for anyone. But so far, this is not what the author promised his audience. So much for enlightenment!

But Carlisle Umunnah was not done yet; he won’t limit his treatise to an invocation of his people's gallantry; he would push the boundaries of decorum and civility to insult other tribes' statesmen - living and dead - who have left impressive legacies by their own right for others to emulate. Umunna goes:

"Obafemi Awolowo, an opportunist and other opportunists like him including Anthony Enahoro waged war of treachery, war of criminality and a war of opportunism; they accomplished this criminality by blockading food from international community from entering Biafra territories. We remember your crimes against humanity and you will pay one by one. As long as the spirit of Biafra lives, so does Biafra. Long live Biafra. Long live motherland."

Those men Carlisle Umunnah branded are among those who fought for our independence in Nigeria - men who also fought for us to remain one nation. Abe Lincoln remains one of America's heroes because he fought to keep that nation together during the attempt of the South to secede, and no amount of cursing or bad-mouthing him can remove the positive status which history has attached to his name. The same goes for men like Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Anthony Enahoro - nothing you say can take away their good name and legacy.

Having said that, the least one expected from Carlisle Umunnah was a scientific, analytical and in-depth showcase of the Biafran experiment that can probably appeal to the common-sense of both the supporters and those who oppose the Biafran idea alike. Unfortunately, we are left to grapple with a ping-pong-like jump-about and zig-zag-like meanderings on issues that he couldn’t even communicate across to his audience in an efficient and understandable manner.

He touched on everything BUT the enlightenment he boasted he would give - one which, according to him, our children's children will benefit from. Not only will his idea of enlightenment be toxic for adults and children of today, his rhetoric is dangerous for our society because it is nothing but the sowing of seeds of discontent that serves no useful purpose in the development of the cause of the Ndiigbo or Nigeria at large.

It is an insult to compare MASSOB to anything Oodua or Arewa, which are historically and culturally-inspired representative bodies of the ethnicities they represent. MASSOB is, simply put, an illegal militant group which engage in near-treasonable activities in Nigeria. The resort to uncivil and violent means of agitation led to the incineration of the residence of a late Igbo icon and First President of Nigeria - Nnamdi Azikiwe - only recently. For days on end late last year, they masterminded holding the local economy of the South-East hostage which resulted in the tension of burning and looting that ensued. Arewa has not gone that far, neither has Oodua.

Focusing on Mr. Umunnah’s article, it is a complete failure of an attempt to enlighten anyone on ‘Biafra’ or anything Biafran. Rather, we have Mr. Umunnah boasting of the invincibility of everything Biafran and making off-point and unintelligible comparisons. East Timor was invaded and annexed in 1975 by Indonesia before it regained her independence in 1999. Quebec is proud to be a part of Canada. Biafra was the republic declared by the Ndiigbo of Nigeria in an attempt to secede in 1967 and which for three years the rest of Nigeria fought to keep as part of the Nigerian geographic entity - as one nation, indivisible. Today, we still remain same with an abundance of potentials.

The sad truth is, the Ndiigbo are not alone in their sufferings – we are all together in the battle for recognition of our rights to life, liberty and justice. A call for secession in Nigeria today is unwarranted. A call for Self-determination, yes; a call for resource-control, yes; a call for a practice of true federalism, yes! But no one tribe in Nigeria is being persecuted or neglected in such a way that it has come to a stage to cry secession.

A call for secession in the current scheme of things is unprogressive. There is nothing that the Ndiigbo suffer today that the rest of us don’t bare – the average Ijaw, Ibo, Hausa/Fulani and Yoruba and all the other tribes that make up the current geographic entity and peoples called Nigeria and Nigerians respectively share very similar burdens. As a matter of fact, the Ndiigbo are one of the more successful tribes in Nigeria.

Mr. Carlisle Umunnah should stick to rallying his people to agitate for recognition within the Nigerian polity – like the rest of us – instead of flogging a dead horse with the hope that the horse will suddenly rise and neigh aloud. And if I may add, next time he wishes to enlighten anyone, he should simply enlighten – not prevaricate on issues that have no bearing on whatever he set out to enlighten his audience about in the first instance.

@Fola, thanks for your objective analysis,i agree with some of the things you said but there are also some that i do not agree with.

(1) The issue of the OPC or Odua being a cultural organisation,i disagree with that intoto. And i beleive that most Nigerians will agree with me when i say that the OPC has been a militant and very violent organisation, that went around killing and maiming people, which was what neccesitated the arrest of Gani Adams and co.

(2)On the issue of Arewa being a peaceful cultural organisation, i also disagree with that intoto. Infact Arewa is the most evil and violent organisation in Nigeria today. They are responsible for the "born to rule" mentality, they are the greatest opposition to resource control for the Niger-Delta, they are the greatest opposition to a restructured Nigeria, that will enthrone equality, justice and fairplay, and put an end to those clamouring for Biafra.
They thrive on injustice, and they are the sponsors of the periodic killings of christians in the North.

Arewa has never done anything to stop the killings in the North, all they want is to come back to power to continue the injustice. But recently when muslims were killed in jos,we all witnessed how Arewa threatened thunder and brimstone if a state of emergency was not declared in jos. That kind of response would never have happened if christians were the victims, because they are the sponsors of the killings in the North.

(3)On the issue of MASSOB being violent i also disagree with you. Every Nigerian knows that MASSOB is non violent, all their protests are usually a call "to stay at home" which is usually obeyed by the majority of the Igbo population. MASSOB is not illegal inasmuch as they dont become violent.Even the United nations charter recognises the right to self determination. Wether we like it or not Igbos and other Eastern Nigerians have been politically marginalised in Nigeria since the end of the civil war. That is why the Igbo a majority tribe in Nigeria is producing the first airforce service chief almost 40 years after the civil war, isnt it a shame?. As of today, there is a conspiracy in Nigeria against Igbo presidency, these things are not secrets,it is well known in political circles. There are so many other clear cases of Marginalisation, which time will not permit me to point out.

Of course that is why MASSOB is getting the support of the Igbo population.
On the issue of MASSOB burning ZIk's house, common sense will tell you that it is not true. How can MASSOB an Igbo nationalist organisation, burn the house of ZIK the greatest Igbo leader todate? It is like saying the OPC burnt chiefs Awolowo's house,of course that is impossible. The police burnt ZIK's house and framed MASSOB,in an attempt to turn the Igbo against MASSOB,but the plot failed, because the Igbo know, it is impossible for MASSOB to burn ZIK's house.

Coming back to the issue of violence,it is the Nigerian Police that has been violent on a non violent MASSOB. Prompting many including myself to beleive that violent splinter groups from MASSOB will emerge sometime in the future, because as the saying goes nobody has a monopoly over violence. Nigeria might become like Iraq sooner than we think.

In conclusion, let it be known now and always, that Biafra will be made possible,by the evil, injustice, and Apartheid in Nigeria which i dont see ending. Unlike the white people who will listen to you and make changes when you make your case, in Nigeria we are dealing with satanic leaders who lack any form of conscience. As the injustices continue, Nigeria will get worse and worse untill one day it will blow up.

A few years ago, nobody could have predicted that groups like MEND and MASSOB will emerge, so also none of us can predict what groups will emerge in the future, but it is predictable that more militant guerilla groups will emerge in the future turning Nigeria to Iraq,if the Nigerian question is not resolved. Let us continue to pray!

call it populistical statement or rumour....it's evidenced on facts on ground that there was/is a grand master-plan by Obj to balkanize nigeria.

facts:

a.) inclusion of third term tenure in recently defeated constitutional amendment.

b.) continous marginalisation of nigeria's masses; no portable water, no electricity, no road networks, no qualitative education, environmental degradation, no security of life etc.

c.) his refusal to restructure nigeria along peaceful-orientated laid-down universal principles (fisical federalism, confederalism, separation base on mutual understanding etc).

d.) total absence of law and order.

f.) his continous dictatorial inclination in terms of governance etc.

more facts will soon arrive...!

With this type of Nigerian view, nothing that Umunnah wrote will make sence to you. An obvious biased, sick mind was created the day you were born and that is just who you are. How you can see those three groups define how you see those that you share that geographical area with.

Says Ednut:

"With this type of Nigerian view, nothing that Umunnah wrote will

Question for Ednut:

What kind of view would you rather a Nigerian have to appreciate
Umunnah's view? A Ghanian view? Or perhaps a Western view? Oh
wait - a Biafran view?!?

Says Ednut:

"An obvious biased, sick mind was created the day you were born

E tu Ednut? Hear ye, hear ye all @ NVS! Bare witness to another
perfect example of one who, lacking in the ability to stand his own
in a civilized and intelligent debate, reaches out for the filth of the
sewage to smear the other person who has an opposing viewpoint.

Ednut, don't go nuts.

What is all this Biafra/Nigeria thing going on. Could we all live as one and forget Biafra. I understand Biafra (I am one too, for goodness sakes) was defeated, but hey, lets get up dust ourselves and keep going. We have a future to create for our children and the unborn generation, why are we going on with this spirit of division and war? Abeg, make we cool down joo. I love my fellow Nigerians from other parts of the country that is not Biafra and I do not want to separate, YOU HEAR ME, I BELIEVE IN ONE NIGERIA!

If the northerner and the southerners are killing themselves because of religion or the likes, it is because of propagandas like this fueled by mindless beings from both quarters that do not like peace. They are only happy when there is death and bloodshed...demon bloodsuckers. I'm sorry, I refuse to allow you people any more blood to guzzle for no tangible reason. Open your own guts and find more blood, not from the innocent Nigerian people, if your blood bank/reserve from the civil war is running dry and you need some more.

And if any war ever breaks out in Nigeria again as a result of all these nonsense, I pray that you and your families be the first ones to die, since you enjoy death and dying so much and hate reasonable peace. That you'll never have any one from your breed to tell the after tale, that no one will ever remember you people to eulogize or hail your stupid bravery. Foolish people!

...AUSP.

What civilized debate? Do you call that a dabate? Abeg go sit don for conner please. That MoEFer is so blinded by hate that he called MASSOB
an illegal militant group which engage in near-treasonable activities in Nigeria.

and falsely accused them of

and then

You have to be blind to see MASSOB as nothing but a non-violent group of guys protesting for their rights.

Then to get Awusas on his side, he tells us that

Arewa has not gone that far

, Even with all that the OPC was/is doing in Lagos, they are all cultural organization to him, read.
neither has Oodua.

GWA has spoken like a true progressive - like a true PATRIOT!
Together we are a beautiful 'bunch', distinct in our ways yet
strikingly impressive as ONE. If things go right, we would be the
STAR of the black race no doubt. When I listen to our
new-generation music talents, I cant but appreciate the strenght
and beauty of our diversity - you listen to Jeremiah Gayang and
you are like "Hausa is such a beautiful language to the ear", you
listen to Ibo, Yoruba and other tribes' talents as well and you
express similar sentiments - rich cultures all molten in one pot
called Nigeria. With the strenght of our numbers, we could easily
be what America is to the Americas ..or what China is to Asia in
the not-too-distant future. If we get our acts right..

Thank you o jare GWA! But easy on the 'sparks' o, e fit land on
top anybody head for hia. Oh Villagers, GWA is another living
proof that NOT all South-Easterners want out of Nigeria. There
are many out there who believe that the current situation hasn't
gotten as dire as warranting a call for secession. May we continue
to find more reasons to remain one than reasons to be divided.

Would you be kind enough to read the story, below? There is an alternative view put forward by no less a person than Chief Chukwuma Azikiwe the son of the late Zik. he says that:

"While confusion over who set the home of Zik ablaze linger, the only account agreed upon was that there was a clash between MASSOB members and Police close to Zik’s house, leading MASSOB members to allegedly pursue the police in to the compound. MASSOB claimed that the police men shot four of its members and ran into the compound.

They pursued them and gave them the beating of their lives and wounded them.
Evidence to this was blood stains noticed in the compound. For Chukwuma Azikiwe, who was present when the incident occurred , the act was shocking. “What we noticed was that there was a disturbance at the round about. The police were engaged with people they said are MASSOB, I don’t know, I was inside. I was with people who were working for us in preparation for the post humous birth day (of Zik). We started hearing heavy gun fire from outside.

We saw a surge of people running in. We saw some wounded policemen, they were steaming with blood. The first thing I did was to convert a room to a sick bay for the wounded policemen. “Some people were telling me to lock the gate, I said no because people were still coming in. I decided that the best option was to evacuate the people inside through the back. “They started smashing the police post, burnt it down. They said they were bent on smoking out the policemen. The surge of the crowd was too much. I could not phone the police because my diary was not available. It was a determined crowd. So if we closed the gate, they would smash it and come in. Some of the policemen that came in were dripping with blood”, Azikiwe said as he recounted his ordeal. He said he lost over N10 million worth of properties to the fire. Besides, Zik’s favourite silver wrist watch and signet ring were also consumed in the inferno. Others are priced philosophy books in the inner room of the burnt house."
