REVIVING THE LOST GLORY OF THE NATION The increased rate of unemployment among Nigerian youths is making the economy becoming a graveyard for the masses. The strong-minded jobless graduates are fast becoming weaker and psychologically imbalance. Nigerian youths in many cities and on our streets are fast becoming vagabonds and thugs for wealthy individuals and politicians for lack of jobs. While public institutions are helpless, some private bodies that offered them jobs for pittance, in commercial activities have continued to exploit, abuse, frustrate and sometimes torture them. Those that engage in petty trading, their goods are wares are seized with official claims that they are disrupting masterplan or beautification of the urban cities. These in most cases have led the Nigerian youths to engage in criminal activities. Considering their commitment in their odd-jobs, commercial activities, petty-trading etc, we could see that they play a quota in the economy building but these are not being appreciated. In the early years of independence government took public issues serious, including job creations funding of vocational and technical education to acquire some skills and learn life-long trade, the other side is the case in the present. Government claim for job provision is often designed for the graduate youths others are in no small measure being supportive in uplifting the economy. The urban street are becoming commercial places for virtually unemployed Nigerian youths who find solace in their sweat , but quite unfortunate, the efforts of these in bridging the vacuum created by insincerity of our government are taking as city-loitering. One wonders by what means the government wants its majority to live, when someone who lives on N1, 000 businesses is expected to rent a store as the government demands. Government should not only be building stores in market places but also small stalls to provide solution to youths with small businesses. This is due to various reasons which range from financial constraints; business means of satisfying consumers needs. Therefore, our government should formulate and implement benefiting and sincere policies that will favour all and sundry in terms of job creation and provision. Those who strive under the scotching sun, drenched with sweat and rain-drops for sustenance should not be seen as nuisance or product of inabilities. Rather, they should be considered like any other entrepreneurs. Because if given the chance and adequate support from government, they are ready to be supportive in building the nation. Besides, Nigerians are trying their best in ensuring the sustenance of the nation. Our government has a lot to do in addressing the problem through designed and implemented strategies for job provisions, and increase funding for vocational and technical education from where they could acquire some skills and learn life-long trade. With assistance from relevant bodies, the non-governmental agencies should intensify their efforts through capacity building by organizing training, workshop, and seminars. Their efforts should be geared toward assisting all youths especially the non-working class because an idle hand is the devilʼs workshop.
