America and Destabilization of Nigeria PDF Print E-mail
By Abdulaziz Ahmad Abdulaziz Fagge

Events unfolding in Nigeria in recent years have for long signal bad omen to the stability of the country and its existence as a sovereign entity. The horrible scenes unmasking in all the parts of the country like a well crafted movie could not of course have happen spontaneously. The flare-ups in the volatile Niger Delta and the deliberate attempt to incite Iraq-like Sunni-Shiite clashes in Northern Nigeria through strategic ambush of prominent Islamic clerics would not have happened without some architects behind it.

Amidst the political hullabaloo in the wake of previous administration’s third term bid, the United States of America predicted the disintegration of Nigeria in fifteen years time. How did they arrive at the conclusion, no one knows. That statement from America generated a lot of commentaries and discussions especially in the media cycles. However, the issue died down no sooner then it rose, in the usual I-don’t-care attitude of Nigeria (the leaders that is) and the Nigerians (reads: the people). Looking at how things are going now in the country, one could easily conclude without the fear of doubt that Nigeria is heading toward that uninvited and uncalled collapsing as ill-willed procrastinated by the US..

Again, last month the American envoy in Nigeria issued a warning to their citizens on the security situation in the country. In the release under question, the US embassy, Abuja and the American Consulate General in Lagos alleged threat of terrorist attack on the “US and other western interests in Nigeria ”, thereby cautioned the Americans in Nigeria to watch their steps. In the same vein, the Department of Foreign and Trade of Australia later issued another security report on the alleged attack. The Australian report is even more specific as it went on to mention the exact time of the said attack and the places. According to the latter release, the attack will be in Abuja and Lagos and will take place by this time (mid of October).

However, amazingly, none of the reports identified the scientific research method they used to arrive at this common sensitive outcome. Then how did they know? Does that mean they are telling anybody that cares what they prepare to do so as to prepare for the worst to happen? A philosophical proverb of my people treatise that when there is no trench on the way, you don’t need to caution someone to take care of trenches, hence doing so means you have set something harmful on the way.

I have been monitoring America ’s ‘intrusion’ and interference in the affairs of many countries in the fast which to my chagrin but not surprise resulted in genocide as in Iraq or massive destruction and impoverishment as in Afghanistan . That’s why when of recent America start rearing its proverbial ugly head to this country I sensed some dangers ahead and became highly sceptic and suspicious.

Though there are mixed reactions in discuss such as this on whether America has hidden intention in its interaction with Nigeria (and all other developing countries to a large extent) yet I subscribe to the “pessimistic” point of view. As it happened in many countries, America is always trying to exert its influence and power in the ‘less privileged countries’ to exploit them and their resources as in Iraq’s oil or destroy those that are not dancing to its tune like the case of Afghanistan.

To borrow a phrase from the pioneer Governor General of Nigeria, Sir Lord Lugard, America’s mission to destabilise Nigeria as alleged by minds like mine, could have “dual mandate”. First, to ensure secession or at least unending battle in the Niger Delta so as to take hold of the opportunity for ‘toll free’ export (bugling?) of the region’s rich oil resources. Secondly, Northern Nigeria, which is identified as one of the homes of potential terrorist by the America ’s mapping after 9/11 bombings need to be deal with. It is their intention to eliminate any ‘terrorist movement’ the world over which is perhaps why they put the North under surveillance.

The usual tactic employed by America is to make some noises such as this on the state of affairs in a country and subsequently use any slide chance to drag itself uninvitedly. In such instances, they would camouflage on any rumble to lunch offensive. Now that they foretell the terror attack, they can stand to see that head or tail it occurs so that they would have their said prophesy come true. And in the event it happened (God forbid) they would now come to the aid? of Nigeria to get away with the terrorists and of course that will be the end of the story.

It is high time that people started showing suspicion about America ’s activities in Nigeria . The issue of deployment of US troops in Sokoto and the Gulf of Guinea and also the infiltration of spies; as the case of an American and two Germans who are recently arrested in the Niger Delta region for alleged espionage are all evidences of what I opine. These and other happenings are indications to nothing but a deliberate plan to perpetuate plan to destabilize this country. I believe no admirer or well-wisher of anybody would always be eager to forecast (and pray for) his downfall. The America ’s prediction of Nigeria ’s collapse is indeed contrary to its pledge of being a friend to Nigeria . And God willing all such prediction will never come true and all effort to bring Nigeria to its knees will surely be in vein.

 May God help us!

Good write up. The onus is now on the government to run a true federation where all components of Nigeria will have a sense of belonging and a place called their own country not a mere geographical expression.

Your raising of this awareness is fine but the obnoxious decrees put in place by the past rulers which are oppresssive need to be abrogated. We can not be talking of One Nigeria at the expense of others. Every part of Nigeria must be treated equally without regard to tribe, ethnicity, religion, sex, physical challenges or otherwise.

Only then can there be total and unflinching support for the continuation of our corporate existence. If the issues raised above are not addressed and God forbid an external aggression comes upon this country now as it is governed, the level of sabotage within the citizenry would be alarming!

JAGA-JAGA.

That was a nice post. Basically, you have said all I intended to say. I have nothing else to add except to say that I completely agree with your comment. . How I only wished that the writer, most especially Yar'adua will get the message. That is what is most important here. The writer raised a problem but out of hypocrisy, purposely failed to propose an acceptable and just solution. Does he take us for mumus?

These people must understand that they can build the false and non-existing "One Nigeria" at the expense of others. Nigeria operates a 419 Constitution that denies the bonafide owners the right to the use of their land, human and mineral resources all in the name of building a fake "One Nigeria." If we don't want the Americans to interfere in our affairs, then we must solve our problems peacefully - through an Independent Sovereign Conference. Anything short of this is simply "unacceptable!" However, better late than never. Otherwise, that country will know no peace.

By the way, I love your comment to the extent that I have decided to save it and quote it at the beginning of one of my future articles.

A popular AFRICAN proverb says without a crack on the wall the lizard can not hide between the wall.
The truth is we as people especially our leaders give room to the west to interfere into our affairs,in the case of NIGERIA as long as
1.The primary aim of our leaders is to LOOT and enrich themselves.
2.Our brothers in the NORTH with the slightest provacation begin to behead peoples head.
The truth is that the west have never and will never regard any BLACK NATION/AFRICA as a partner.Africa to them is a place were they can get HUMAN and MATERIAL at will.

Good talk"THE ONUS NOW IS ON THE GOVERNMENT TO RUN A TRUE FEDERATION"
Are you sure about this? what kind of FEDERATION do you have in mind because i have come to notice in this SQUARE that majority understand FEDERATION to be material resources control only.
Is it possible for anyone(NIGERIAN) who is ORIGINALLY not from say ANAMBRA,but have lived all of HIS/HER live in ANAMBRA to become GOVERNOR.Let alone a foreigner born in NIGERIA contesting an election.
To me MILITARY,DEMOCRACY,FEDERATION,MONARCHY,OLIGARCHY and what have you will not solve the problem in NIGERIA.The fact is we have SELFISH,WICKED and HEARTLESS people in power.SIMPLE

RAYNOSA,
My brother I see your point. The type of federation I look forward to is the one which every ethnic nationality would negotiate among themselves as equal partners in a true sovereign national conference. Not a mago-mago or wuru-wuru type of SNC as recently done during the last administration. That is where true representatives of the various ethnic nationalities which make up Nigeria would participate not those that rigged their way to power or appointed by the government.

This true representatives of the various groups would now debate in a free environment devoid of political manipulation and intimidation and decide the furture of how each partner would relate to the other, key issues like; who is a Nigerian, defence, resource control, power sharing, who is a state indigene, local government structure, what are the limitations of non-state indigenes resident in another state as a nigerian citizen, what political structures should we adopt - states, provinces, regions, etc. How does the states or provinces or whatever relate to the centre, a weak centre / strong centre or a mix of both whichever is agreed upon and approved by the body.

A constitution which every ethnic group would endorse is expected to come out of the exercise. This is my line of thinking.

emj,

Good talk. However for that to happen, we need a democratic system that will allow us to choose competent, honest and dedicated leaders. The bitter truth - wheter you agree with me or not, is that we are in today's mess because we have been ruled all along by those incompetent, visionless, morally bankrupt and dishonest northerners/military officers. If you need more facts on this topic, they are in my article titled "Leadership, decision-making, the North, the Military and development in Nigeria. (Part 1)" Other parts will follow with time.

There is a Russian proverb that goes thus "Рыба гнется с голова" Translation: "The fish rots from the head." If we had been ruled by people like Pa Zik or Awo, instead of those "kill and go" Zombies - Gowon, evil genius, murtala, buhari, abacha, obasanjo, shagari, our country would had been a much better place to live today. It is obvious now too that Yar'adua does not have the capability to solve Nigeria's problems. The man is just ruling through "trial and error." He is not the man to take us to the "promised land." He is another Shagari in a new package. We can never make a headway with these kind of leaders. The North prefers to bring down Nigeria with it than give way to a competent Southerner to rule. Quota System in action.

Their philosophy reminds me of a Yoruba proverb that goes thus " Kaka ki eku m'aje sese, a fi se awada nu." The solution to leadership problem will automatically lead to the solution of other problems plaguing the country, including the one we are discussing in this thread.
